  • michael mcdonald is a great singer, but Tom Johnson is the voice of the Doobie Brothers

  • Nobody sings like Tom Johnston, this version is the BEST I've ever heard!!

  • @RettroDood - Even if this/these songs are 'somewhat' synced. mimied or edited, they're still great! Even if this/these songs were being played during an action-scene in a Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood movie, they'd make the scene that-much-more enthralling! :)

As with all the 'lost' television rock shows, like, "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert," "The Hudson Brothers," "Ed Sullivan," "Shindig," etc., to "KIDS" like all of us over 40 - THIS IS CLASSIC ROCK!! :)

Thank you for posting this!! :)

  • This rocks! As with anything the Doobie Brothers did or do (prior to, or, without, Michael McDonald - as 1968ivanhoe wrote in his earlier comment)!

Tom Johnston is a GREAT musical performer! You'll NEVER get tired of him! :)

  • JUST MISSED!!! "Take Me In Your Arms {Rock Me}" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 12 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1975. In 1965 Kim Weston took this song to No. 50!!!

  • Oh yes.. the Doobies simply own this song. Is there a better vocalist than Johnston for this band? It was a big surprise to hear Kim Weston's original. She's belting it out on her version as well.

  • You can say that he or she recorded this first, but the Doobie Bros. OWN this song. If you don't recognize Tom Johnston's lead vocals or Jeff Skunk Baxter's amazing guitar solo you're either a liar or simply pathetic. OK, go on about your business.

  • Love this

  • Better band prior to Michael Macdonald

  • The Doobie Brothers' version is by far the best.

  • Perfect

  • Great live performance! Good sound/mix levels...and a very tasty guitar solo by Skunk Baxter. I wonder how he got that nickname??

  • Oh.....if I could only go back to 1975. Damn, I sound like Uncle Rico on Napolean Dynamite.

  • Tommy still hadn't decided on the final lyrics on this version of China Grove

  • wow!

  • I think Baxter is so dam good... I'm going right now to listen to him with Steely Dan.... Bye Y'all ! ! !

  • Take Me always gets me out of my seat. Great compo clip.

  • skunk baxter one of the best of his era

  • I taught them all they know

  • It's good to see a young and vibrant Skunk Baxter once again.

  • Good job.

  • All the Doobie Brother songs take me back to a nicer less stressed out life ..like highschool. The stress in highschool is nothing compared to the real world. But, these songs get you going and everything is GREAT! And you just keep rockin on!!

  • @KellyGiftShop

    AMEN!!

  • Fellas, this is as raw as it gets... It's called Classic Rock because all great rock music is Classic, and becomes never tired of being listened too....Great post...!

  • I want to see a video of the the Doobies playing the song "Music Man" from this album. Anybody?

  • Dobbie Brothers denied

  • These two songs are my fave Doobies tracks.

    Now saved in my faves!

  • great tune

  • I was a huge fan of the Doobies with McDonald and I know a lot weren't at the time, and I guess I can understand why. There was a major change in direction.

  • @poltome Michael McDonald made the doobie brothers better.

  • @wander73 That he did, but a lot of their fans at the time didn't agree.

  • @wander73 it totally depends on what your preference is.........if you like soft,melodic,R&B,etc......... music Michael is your man BUT if you like southern fried, classic rock, with essentially harder R&B (if that makes since) then Johnston is where its at. I personally like them both and cant pick (if i really tried i probably could but nonetheless it would be close) its almost like comparing apples and oranges or old beatles compared to new. But saying michael made the band better is debatable

  • love the older, vintage music

  • I like this version and Kim Weston's.

  • YEEHAW! It's all good! Luv the Doobie Brothers..good songs, have stood the test of time. " U down with it?! Hell, yeah!" LOLOLOL...

  • check out eddie hollands original version, 1964, he wrote the words and his brother wrote the music with lamont dozier ha ha ha, but i love this version and so does holland dozier holland

  • Holland–Dozier–Holland

  • i ove that beginning part, listen to this all day long! :D

  • This is just soooo cool......

  • Boy, these guys are good ol' rock and roll! I love the drummer stage right on China Grove... wearing a polar bear on his back!

  • iv'e loved every version of this that came out of the motown studios and there were many , but this version took it to another level especially when performed live

  • siiiiiiideburns!

  • i love this song it always makes me get up and dance thank god for the music from the 60s and 70s!!!!!!!

  • best live band ever!!!!! (from the heart)

  • I must say that Charity Brown's recording of Take Me in Your Arms is my favorite

  • Canadian Charity Brown recorded this in 1975 also, it is by far the best version of the song ever !

  • @jubbadupa ya, canadian artists have always taken a backseat.... some actually think that Anne Murray's "Snowbird" belongs to Lynn Anderson

  • @jubbadupa I don't like the way it is being sung on here.

I like the way when the radio stations play it better.

  • These are great, thanks! I almost forgot what a sexy thing Tommy was....! Love them, and Captain & Me is one of my all-time favorite albums, period, by them or anyone else. To this day, whenever I listen to it, I end up playing in several times in a row! :)

  • Haha gotta love the Gibson Norlin era SG Systems Amps. And the Gibson L5S Tom Johnston is playing.

  • haha gotta love the Gibson Norlin Era Solid State Amps.

  • @Teleman73 and the Grabber too

  • Prefiro a de 1965 gravada com a KIM WESTON!

  • Prefiro a KIM WESTON ^^

  • You made my night.........I feel like I'm a teen again.....I loved these Guys!!

  • aaah, the "Skunk"

  • I think John Hartman took that jacket from Buck Owens!! : ) Great footage - thanks for putting this one up!

  • 2 guitar parts and a bass part, brilliantly plaid by master crafstmen.

    And then they added Skunk...

There was some major guitar power in this band.

  • Jesus is just alright with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Take me in your arms!!!! Haven't seen that clip since Countdown in 1975! Sensational post!!!!!

  • Superb band ! :)

  • Great share Gaz thanks :)

  • Why did You Tube remove the original Studio versions of Another Park Another Sunday and Take Me In Your Arms by the Doobies Brothers? This is Bullshit since Google bought out You Tube.

  • wonderful creation awesome music thank you for sharing

    Claire

  • Fantastic Share & Post!!!...5*s Thankyou mission..:))

  • classic favs!!

  • Good one :))

  • Great !!! I Love it !!! Make me Happy !

    Thank you guy !

    Ciao !

  • Thanks for the GREAT videos! Never mind the complainers.

  • Thank God i have all the original studio versions of a Million different Groups and Singers from the 1960's,1970's,and 1980's on CD. i stopped counting how many songs i have on Audio CD. Don't throw away any old CD's folks because you will never again be able to find them on the shelves at Music .

  • Google destroyed and killed You Tube.

  • Actually You Tube used to have a lot more studio versions until Google bought out You Tube. Imeem was good until My Space bought them out. Now i cannot get access to my Imeem profile because you have to be a paid member of My Space Music. The God Damn Corporations are ruining everything all free access on the Internet.

  • Thanks 4 posting, good stuff, brings back good memories.

  • With due respect Flagg1991, what exactly do you mean by "faggott version"??

What is "the other one", which you refer to??

This is the real deal, as presented back in the late 70's for TV distribution.

Read the description, dude! Audio was remixed , back in the 70's, minus keyboards, (to reflect what was visible on the video), as were original vocals... these were done live to give the video a "live feel!"

If you refer to some dumbed down DJ remix, you are confusing original from new.

  • Oh, well then the game has changed. If this version is live and has been further mutilated as you say then this very well COULD be the version I was thinking of. But I won't know for a while. The only Doobie versions of this song on Youtube are live ones.

I don't listen to "dumbed down DJ" remixes, by the way.

  • I still don't think that this version is the one I have in mind. The guitar in the beginning sounds unfamilar. Like I said, it could be, but I doubt it. And if I knew the version to which I was refering would I be here arguing with you over a nearly 40 year old song?

  • @Flagg1991 FYI...this is NOT the original studio version. you're right the guitar is different and the original studio version had more of a string/violin sound in it.

  • @455Transam (and Flagg1991, for that matter...)

OK! Let me clarify. I stand by my statement that these two vids are based on the ORIGINAL recordings. Certain elements have been removed from the original , and replaced live. Some, (strings, brass, percussion) were not replaced, in order to impart a "Live" feel.

In "Take Me In Your Arms", original Vocals were retained in this version.

AS WERE the layered backing vocals. (listen closely... there are female backing vocals) Are they on stage??) No!

  • @RettroDood I don't know why my post posted 3 times didn't mean to do that.......

  • @455Transam (and FLagg1991, for that matter...)

    ..continued..

"Take Me In Your Arms" was sped up by a semitone for the video.

Baxter's solo is subtly different to the original, that leads me to think he either did it live, OR the remix for the vid contained an OUTTAKE! Also some of the chorus backing vocals were stripped out toward the end.

China Grove is as I said, pretty much the same as the record, MINUS Piano and possibly other stuff. The main vocal has been replaced by a live version!

  • @455Transam (and Flagg1991,)

Sorry you guys are pissed at the vid, but I thought I'd try and set the record straight. (pardon the pun). Recording is my job, and I know how this shit works!

    Google "multitrack recording",

These dudes didn't record their albums to a 2-track (stereo) machine with a couple of mics!

When it came time to doing a video, give them the credit for remixing their shit, and adding any live content to make it look real.

After all, just enjoy for what it is, "gay" or not!

  • @RettroDood Oh No I'm not pissed at all....just saying it's not the original recording. And Tom Johnston sings a few words differently than he does on the studio version. I LIKE this version!

  • @RettroDood ...I'm not pissed at all...just pointing out that it's not the original studio version.......I LIKE this version and I've been a Doobie fan since about 1975. I just like the studio version better.

  • @455Transam

Yeah. I hear this song occasionally on the oldies station, and I love it. This...just dosen't stack up.

  • @RettroDood

Okay, I was wrong and you were right. I heard the studio version on The Mike Harvey Show last night, and am pretty sure that it was the one, althought knowing it was the Doobies' version planted a seed of doubt in my mind. I'm man enough to admit I was wrong, but...this version is still homosexual in nature. Why can't I find the studio version?

  • @RettroDood I think Fag...er......Flag is refering to the original "studio" version with the string orchestra and violins in it......this is a "live" version.

  • @RettroDood

This is not the original, but arguable one of the best covers out there. The original, which was done by Eddie Holland in 65,' was a Motown tune. I do not believe him either, classic rock (rock being the key word) wouldn't play any other version besides this one, because it's the only one that is rock related. The rest of the covers, Kim Weston, and the Isley Brothers were Motown, like the original.

  • @RettroDood Not to answer for flagg, but the only other version I know of is one by Kim Weston. Both versions are good.

  • @Flagg1991 Faggot version? What are you like 12 years old?? Idiot!

  • Saw doobies August 2009...They blew me away and absolutely destroyed the performance. Very, very impressive!

  • @sellthemanicans Their voices and instrumental talents are remarkably well preserved.

  • Imeem has better variety of chart topping original versions than You Tube.

God Damn My Space bought them out last year. Assholes

  • anyone know what the lead singer is called?? ta x

  • Lead Singer is TOM JOHNSTON

  • How would you like to room with a guy named "Skunk"?? lol

  • The DOOBIES are the only band I ever saw with 2 Drummers!

  • @455Transam

    38 special

  • Ah yes...Allman Bros too.....

  • These boys have been sooooo gooood for soooooooo loooong......Doobs are great arent they? the Allman brothers had two drummers also...

  • love this song came out before my time im 22 but i love the classic

  • wow tiran porter a'great bass player i love his bass playing and skylark hell yeah another unreal bass player hell i might as well give up playing bass there unreal also the doobies still rock amen

  • One of my fav bass players here. Underrated doesn't cover it.

  • Rock doesn't get any better than this. What a fine combination of talents and influences which made up the Doobies. Love Tom's raunchy vocal and Jeffa Baxter's stunning guitar solo. And where would the Doobies be without Pat Simmonds, one of the best guitar pickers in the business? All but one of the band sing backing vocals another characteristic of their inimitable sound. FANTASTIC!

  • @daveyboots Skunk Baxter is not in this video.

  • @wheelinthesky300 Correction:

Skunk is in the "Take Me In Your Arms" performance,

not in the "China Grove" section.

  • @wheelinthesky300 Skunk Baxter not in this video? I thought that the guy with specs who looks like Jeff Baxter playing the brilliant guitar solo on "Take me in your arms" is Jeff Baxter. Who is he then? :-)

  • I think I remember them on the Dinah Shore Show doing this. I wish I had their hair and talent. I need more talent than hair, and I need a lot of hair!

  • Best Doobie Tune!!!

  • The skunk is in fine form. Man he must have loved playing with these looser, sloppier guys than the robots in Steely Dan

  • The China Grove footage is from the BBC Old Grey Whistle Test. I do know that bands mimed in the studio seen. I think it may have been in Manchester. China Grove I would say is heading towards my favourite piece of Guitar sound recorded in the Studio. So I don't mind the early morning miming in Manchester.

  • Sounds more like a Fender than a LesPaul

  • I love this song! It really has that old fashioned motown feel to it.

  • I have been a fan for ages. Please would someone post the song South of the Border.

  • class just class

  • You like rock&roll? This is ROCK&ROLL!!!

Damn...what a guitar jam by Tom!

  • Wow, brilliant footage!

  • real nice....

  • Unreal man, 30 years I've waited in the back waters of NZ and finally mannnnnnn

I'm almost tempted to go and get me a doobie after 20 years!!!!!!!!!!! I love this shit cheers man

  • Brilliant Baxter solo. For me, Steely Dan lost something when he left.

  • They have ALWAYS had 2 drummers. You would really notice the loss of power and thickness to the sound without them One power drummer and one rhythm.

  • The brilliant (and totally underrated) Tiran Porter rocking a Grabber (or Gripper?)!

  • Seen this version of "Take me in your arms" before, but not China Grove....thx for posting. What a band!!

  • great song and fabulous musicians ....although

i wonder why two drummers ....no need.

thanks for posting this excellent clip

    long live the doobies

  • Man, The Doobies are too good. Thanks for posting this
