Great tutorial! I can use this to create linked circles and more abstract forms.

Explanation of Live Unite (I'm on PC with CS5):
♦ Select your two shapes, they don't even need to be touching yet.
♦ Hold down (alt) and click Unite in the Pathfinder window.
♦ Deselect both shapes, and then 'direct select' the shape you want to move around and merge with the other.

However, you did not clarify how to ensure that you could separate the rectangle and inner circle after changing the color of both gray. Also, you did not make provision for mac users.
