I agree with Chris. Wonder what ever happened to Virtual Reality? I remember the series VR5. What's the big deal about 3D. Virtual Reality, now that's something.
It enhances depth. It's a gimmick at the moment with the stupid glasses and all, but in the future it'll be pretty fundamental to image and video quality standards.
Agreed. Unless 3D TVs become like HD TVs are now in the fact that if you don't have one... Well dude what are you waiting for?... I will never buy one. I think 3D is good for content that has a plot. Such as a movie. Yeah it can be fun to go out and see a movie in 3D but to go on a computer, tablet, home TV... and read an article, watch a news broadcast such as TLDR, or even play a game 3D is not for me.
3D is a Gimmick! You should NEVER need to wear some stupid glasses for 3d.. Since we have OLED panels now, and they can be translucent, why not layer and maybe offset 3 or 4 panels behind one another to give the image depth, WITHOUT THE STUPID GLASSES! I bet people would be more accepting of it then. We have the technology to do it right, maybe I should take out a loan and beat them to it?
I completely disagree! I have not been to the cinema in years and because of 3D I am actually going and I refus to watch anything but the 3D movies.. I love 3D and hope our idevices have it soon with the growing number of 3D games and apps we are seing in the app store.. a gimick? rubbish is it! 3D on youtube I agree though might not be such a great idea.
When 3d is done in post production, and not filmed natively, then yes, I think it's a gimmick. I remember seeing the final Harry Potter movie in 3d, and thinking "Wow, this is really distracting, and not at all well done." But then I saw How to Train Your Dragon in 3d, and thought it looked really fantastic. I'm also looking forward to seeing The Hobbit in 3d, which I believe will be awesome. I think it's great in games too, for its immersiveness. So in short I like it when done properly.
To tell the truth I think HD is a gimmick. I owned standard TVs for 25 years of my life and finally broke down and bought a 42 inch TV with 1080p. Truth be told I can't tell the difference at all.
With 3D at least I can noticeably tell the difference. With HD it felt like people were exaggerating it just so they could feel justified in spending the extra money.
3D actually looks like it would be worth the extra price.
For me, it can sometimes be a gimmick. Movies that aren't made in 3D and are just edited that way suck. Movies that ARE made in 3D look nice and feel kind of empty without it. Video games are the same way. 3DS games suck when they're only in 3D for it to be in 3D. But when they're actually designed for 3D, it amerces you in to the world and makes the game feel more "real". It also helps me focus on certain areas better and doesn't hurt my eyes since it wouldn't be ported.
I actually enjoy getting lost in a story. I don't know about you guys, but 3D is a plus for me. I saw Toy Story 3 in IMAX 3D and it was the best, seeing the toys move around in 3D made me feel like I was in the room watching them move about. It was great and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
The reason for 3D is to make the video more realistic and involving to the viewer. We need it in the same way we need higher resolution video and colour video. It's not required but it's an extra tool at film makers disposal.
Your videos don't actually require any video at all and is hence redundant to say that they don't need 3D.
Chris your argument is stupid. What is the point of wasting resources to make a 720p HD video where all you're doing is voicing an opinion? Seeing your pores does not provide me with any added information so why do I need it? Chris your point is somewhat valid, but it is a natural progression of video (hopefully in the future there wont be a need for the 3D glasses but it is a progression none the less). In the past it has been a gimmick, but only b/c it couldn't be done as well.
I love 3D, but only when done right. In cases like Harold & Kumar, it is a gimmick, but it's supposed to be. In films like Avatar or animated films like Cars 2, it looks amazing and feels much more immersive to me. I still the best use of 3D is in gaming. I love 3D gaming on my 3DS and trying out console games in 3D looks amazing.
I've been saying it's a gimmick for a while, but i got 1 friend who says if something don't have it he wont buy it. Then i just say "oh well". I don't think it will be around too long. People will get bored with it like every other passing fad. This isn't the first time the 3D fad came along either. The last time hardly anyone could wear the glasses for too long without developing headaches.
When I think of 3D, I think of the animation movie "Up." In the case of that movie, at least, the 3D probably enhanced the experience for me. Is it essential, however? Probably not.
Aren't all new technologies gimmicks at first? Sound in the first talkies was a gimmick, until it wore off and directors mastered the art of sound engineering, foley, etc. Color was a gimmick at first, until it wore off and they stopped putting in bright reds and greens just for the heckuvit and selected palettes that set the mood. Same with surround and other innovations. 3D is the same way. Give it a couple of decades.
@PrestoMovie12 How could it improve your vision if your eyes get tired much quicker? It just makes no sense. Take the 3DS for example and try to play a game for 2 hours with 3D enabled. You can't. You'll get a headache, that's why they let you disable or reduce the 3D effect.
The only time 3D is good is with Avatar and a few other movies or when I went to watch a play and there were ghosts and severed heads flying out of the screen then 3D is good
It's definitely just a gimmick, for most applications. Movies, fine. Youtube videos... No thanks. I don't want you popping out of my screen, Chris. :P
3D is also like touch screens and voice recognition tech in phones. If it's not done properly or even perfectly... it can be a very annoying experience. Right now I don't think 3D in any form is that great.
To me all 3D is a gimmick unless it's used to properly show something that needs 3D. Right now in movies it just gives the directors an excuse to make things come towards the screen. It's actually annoying.
I think its all in what its being used for, and how well it fits that role. Take CoD Black Ops for instance. I've played it on a 3D television, then when back to my computer monitor, and I don't feel like i'm missing out on anything. i thought it was cool at first, then it annoyed me. Now, when i went to go see "Avatar" in 3D, then got the dvd version, i didnt like the dvd version as much, because the 3D fit the movie so well that it enhanced the experience. It all depends
Um, maybe it depends on how it's being used? I'd argue the new Mario game on the 3DS really sort of proves that when designed around 3D, it really adds to the game. It's not about things popping out of the screen, it's about giving a flat image depth. And when designers design around the idea of having depth, they can add to the experience. Nintendo did a great job with that on Mario 3D Land
Right now, I think 3D is too hard to produce correctly, and has a very small viewing audience. However, I think in the future (a long time from now), we will be laughing at the idea of 2D monitors.
@lockergnome I don't really think it's a gimmick. Really, some things are good in 3D. And depth in 3DS really helps in games and gives more realisticness. I do not think it's a gimmick. Eventually, it will get better. I find it good.
Chris, I would agree that 3d IN IT'S PRESENT FORM is often used as a gimmick, but I believe we're finally starting to play with methods that trick our brain into thinking something has depth. This isn't our old red and cyan glasses. This is different. I view our 3d technology today as a stepping stone towards something like virtual/augmented reality. Those would be 'optical illusions' as well, yes? The thing is, we've just started. We just need to see a few generations worth of development.
When 3D is truly just that, three-dimensional (as in holographic imaging), I concede it is merely a gimmick. I do feel that 3D immersion systems, merging true three-dimensional images with movies or interactivity, will be the ultimate in entertainment one day. Until then, we should direct our research and development in that direction.
And by that logic, what is the point of having colour?
