  • Song name?

  • @irishben15 the chain by fleetwood mac

  • this goes together like peas and carrots

  • MY DAD put this music to the programme, god I miss him

  • Back in the days when Bernie was a team principal.

  • Ah, the good ol days

  • @swpuera It was used for BBC's coverage from 1978 until coverage moved to a different channel in 1997. They got it back in 2009 and it's still used as the intro ( /watch?v=FQWdDDrzogg ). As for countries, UK, and anywhere they sold Grand Prix coverage to in the 70's and 80's until Bernie took over (which was a load of countries).

  • BRING BACK MURRAY WALKER...GO..GO..GO...

  • BRING BACK MURRAY WALKER...

  • nice!!

  • This has better bass line than the current one.

  • I miss the sparks that use to come off the cars. :(

  • in which countries and how many years this was the opening??? Fleetwood Mac - The Chain... i love... and i need this information.. thanks...

  • @swpuera in the uk we had it as the opening, till about 4 or 5 years ago i think

  • to watch f1 old races go to classicgrandprixclub

  • Murray Walker = Legend

  • when i look up ''fleet wood mac-the chain'' a totally different intro comes up :/

  • @ad1998100 The Formula 1 bit is towards the end of the song.

  • i dont know why codemasters decided not to use this song for the F1 2010 game

  • Shiiit STOP FUKIN RAINING...crappy canada weather we wanna watch da effin race

  • where has this been all my life. why do we not have it in australia...

  • Hey alZENL, I am the same but play it with kart racing videos

  • couldn't care less about the cars and racing elements, what a beast of a tune

  • I LOVE IT!

  • Great music, and great races, but ... any intro with GIANT FLASHING TEXT has to go. It looks extreme amateurish.

  • @neeyotube it was 1979 remember, I think big flashing text was about as complex as a BBC-B computer could go

  • @neeyotube

This is from 33 years ago. Older than you , sunshine.

  • silent x

  • mmm great days - a bit more interesting than it is now... they went to S.A..? thought there was a boycott of sports there ..?

  • Comment removed

  • @chefblanc The boycotting of motor sport in South Africa didn't happen until the mid 80's. 1985 was the last one until the end of apartheid. And, quite a few teams boycotted the 1985 one, too. Incidentally, South African Jody Scheckter was the 1979 Formula One champion.

  • @JFredUK mm I was gonna go for a job working for him once as chef but heard he is too fussy! heheh

  • Clearly the producers in those days had it spot on and realised the main reason people watch F1 (other than for the intro music) is to see cars spinning off the track! Much better than the video they had last season!!

  • 1979 Intro?

  • love the analog sound

  • This was when F1 was cool, gone fuckin anal these days. Used to love Murray screaming down the mic, pure drama! :D

  • when i hear this tune i think of Senna, Prost, Mansell

  • Am gonna rob my dads car`and race around town to this COOL music....Bwahahaha...well when I get a licence I will ;D

  • the best days when you had malbro on the back of schumakers car

  • 1979!

  • love this song

  • Nice shot of the Ligiers (sorry if i spelled it wrong :()

  • The only thing missing is the GO GO GO!!!!!

  • Fabulous, thanks for posting this, I think there is no better theme for the greatest sport known to man

  • I`m playing it at 11.

  • @alzeNL It's one louder.

  • lol young Murray

  • The bass guitar line is sick :D

  • CRANK IT UP TO 11

  • I can play this on my bass guitar and my parents tell me to turn it DOWN, well my mum does, my dad just comes in and gets out his guitar :D

  • i think the song really fits the sport of formula one

  • Hang on a second. So South Africa wasn't allowed to host the World Cup or the Olympics during the Apartheid era, but it was allowed to host Formula 1...?

  • @pentherapy formula 1 was full of white people anyway so i doubt anyone cared

  • @sekky123

Yeah, they didn't have any problems in racing General Franco's fascist Spain either. Then again, tourists around Europe didn't have any problems with that either. in the early 70's.

  • this is the only good part of this song by fleetwood mac

  • 0:23 - thats Mirage from the Transformers :D

  • words cant describe the awesomness!!!!!

  • From the days when you could sit down for a Sunday afternoon with the family & watch very (very) brave men kill themselves because the racetrack owners couldn't be bothered to put a few more armco barriers in, or give the marshalls proper equipment.

  • My father chose this music when contacted by his BBC colleagues, he wlaso edited this opening sequence.

So proud that my dad creatd one of the most iconic TV moments ever.

RIP Bob Abrahams, 'The Man who pulled The Chain'.

  • AND ITS GO GO GO!!!!!!! I love the F1! watch it every weekend =)

  • Cool out...........love it

  • Stevie nicks

  • I cant fooking hear anymore............aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

is this a case for where theres blame theres a claim

  • the chain was F1 music. simple.

And Murray is the No 1 commentator of F1. Him and James Hunt were the best.

    classic murray:

raining in australia gp senna waving frantically Murray says " We see you aryton we see" the man cared.

  • Why can't Murray stay young forever and just commentate on F1? The current commentators are great but my childhood memories of F1 are all with Murray Walker's voice getting so excited, and transferring that excitement to us watching at home. (Although I'm a bit young to have known this intro =P)

  • Everybody thinks this intro is at the start of The Chain when it is at the end...

  • haha very true mate, very true

  • @007toft007 Sad but true, only hear the full song recently (and bloody good it is too). Still, did there need to be another reason for F1 going back to the BBC than to have this back? And at least Murray does bits for the website these days.

  • this is so gd, love the music, fleetwood mac the chain

  • loving the "grand prix" graphic

  • I'm a 16 year old, who grew up watching

F1 on ITV so I was excited when they said that the BBC would get it back. And now that you can watch classic races on the BBC F1 website, it takes you back to the old days, especially with James Hunt and Murray Walker doing the commentary.

  • It never really was the same on ITV. It was decent there for the first few years but then it just got boring after Walker left...

  • Back when Nomex (not an commercial agent) was the only thing between you and certain death.

  • Back when F1 was about Racing and not Glamor.

  • @ToroRosso20 f1 has always been about glamour but the good sexy, awesome kind now its all sponsors deals and personal appearences

  • It's great to see F1 back on the BBC. None of this commercial break nonsense that you had on ITV. Pity Murray wasn't doing the commentary, but at least he has his say on the website.

  • love that song

  • Murray Walker and James Hunt! Legends!

  • Murray was the best ever. Doesn't matter how many errors he made, he made the sport even more watchable and you can't compare Martin Brundle to Murray, you compare Martin to James Hunt and thats where I think the debate lies as to who was better. I will forever remember James Hunt for his "bullshit" comment during one of the Monaco GP's hahahaha

  • Yep James Hunt was good as he had the knowledge of being a former driver. I remember years ago in the early 80's when he said of Jean Pierre Jarier "he's a french wally always has been always will be" . i didn't stop laughing for a week!!

  • fair point though martin, for me is the analyst as was the excellent james hunt. legard is the commentator as was james allen for ITV, the roles are clear whenever legard talks over or rudely interrupts martin with some irrelevant babble...which is often. murray is just a special character whom people love. in my eyes he's as classic and captivating as whicker or attenborough.

  • @voodooOne Murray Walker got rather carried away and was prone to making entertaining errors when he did so, but his enthusiasm was infectious, and Formula 1 needs that. Even when it reached the stage that nearly everyone else was only interested in the glamour Murray was only bothered by the racing, and still seems to be.

  • when men were men

  • ITS GO GO GO GO..

  • Hahaha "and its GO GO GAAAOOO!"

    Murray... legend

  • everytime i hear that bass line i think of F1..i miss murry walker to.. "and its go go go"

  • I miss murray walker....the BEST commentator ever

  • yea.... murray was awesome

  • class tune mate

  • Best intro EVER!

  • class tune

  • Ground effect cars, turbos, tobacco advertising and tracks with proper high-speed corners. Just don't come off at Silverstone's Copse, no gravel, just several chain-link "catch fances"

    Those were the days!

  • As the saying goes "they don't make 'em like they used to."

  • I well remember the introduction of Renault's turbos-such power, never have we seen such excitement.I used like watching in laces like Kyalami, but stopped watching when ITV took over. Now its back with the BBC I watch a bit again, but miss Rosberk (Keke) Mansell, Lauda.I remember poor old Murray talking about the new driver A-yerton Senna, which he ballsed-up in his own inimitable way.James Hunt not the best driver, but what an informed commentator he was-sadly still missed. Those were the days.

  • @fokjock

    sorry Rosberg!

  • @stuckontheupslow oh yeah!!

  • good they use that song from the chain again

    Perfect

    BBC Rocks

  • it is

because it came back to bbc

  • No shit, Sherlock(!)

  • this song is F$££$£$ awsome!!

  • this is definitely the best intro ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The best intro song ever. And Murray Walker is the best commentator ever.

  • the guitar rift actually sounds like a ferrari V12...

  • Im gonna get out my bass and play this!

  • i love thissssss i can play it on piano :)

  • Ohh My Godd ii lovagee this vid and thee song X

  • i love this!!!! i can play this on the guitar

  • i love this music i want to play it on piano

  • i just hurt my ears...but i enjoyed it!

  • lmao at the last bit

  • So long, Kyalami Circuit. You were good.

  • I just blew my eardrums off.

  • Im a bit confused...do you want us to play it at full volume?!

  • YES MAX VOLUME = LOUUUUUUUUUUD

  • @DrBlockbuster MAX VOLUME LOUD..... Well nahhh

  • @DrBlockbuster its the oly way and if any onedoesnt they should be fined $1,000,000

  • @DrBlockbuster FUCKIN MAXXXXX!!!!!!

  • I have to play this instead of listening to the current bbc f1 intro. is that bad?

  • Is that bad? - Not at all.

    F R E E D O M of choice!

  • @hihynynhhf ots the same thing

they brought it back in 2009

  • south african gps, hahah shame u dont see them no more

  • Yesch and why not too !

  • @DrBlockbuster

They'd get carjacked halfway round the first lap

  • @DrBlockbuster money, the kylami circuit is still there too!, the FIM MotoGP uses it every year.

  • the 2009 version is made worse by all the tyre screeching, this is THE f1 theme

  • Great comment - thanks!

  • You soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo have to play this loud lol

    amazing song

  • OK ... so to be even MORE clear, I've added a text box to help you listen to it at LOUUUUUUUUD! :)

  • The new intro I have to admit is by far the best but I wish they turned down the volume of the FX over the classic tune! When I first saw the "The Scream Of Science" intro, my jaw dropped to the floor! Also, is this the start to the race with the horrific accident involving Mario Andretti and the young fire marshall?

  • Sorry I mean Tom Pryce not Mario Andretti.

  • No Pryce's fatal accident was in 1977 this is 1979.

Im not a fan of the new intro, like you said the FX are too loud and i'd prefer to see actual racing footage rather than the CGI crap or whatever it is they use. There's a better F1 2009 intro on youube which some made - in my opinion anyway :)

  • LEGEND MATE

  • Indeeeeeeeeeed and many thanks! Play it L O U D !

  • I am so glad this theme is back, and no more ad breaks!

  • ... yet

  • Dr Blockbuster wrote to the Beeb about Murray Walker - still no reply. Murray is doing videos for BBC weekly it appears but no sight of him actually commenting on a race

  • murry walker is a legand and i think he would be missing out if didnt want to stay with F1, even still ai have to respect his decisions

  • awsome

  • IMO they should get Murray back as a guest commentator at Silverstone

  • I've asked the BBC ... awaiting a reply, if it comes :smiles:

  • We need to get the race back from Donnington First :(

  • Where was Murray today .. I'll need to find out

  • He is only on the website. At least thats what I heard.

  • Yeah, your not a true F1 fan if you don't get up to watch it live. What's one missed lie in compared to brilliant racing?

  • lol I got up at 5am yesterday, forgot about brittsh summer time clock change

  • it's the end of fleetwood mac 'the chain' it really sort of builds up the tension and goes really well with the cars racing i wander if murray will be back for some of the new bbc races

  • murray is back. hadnt you heard that?!?!?! lol

  • yeah i could tell i mean what's f1 without murray??!!?!?!? lol i got up at 4.55 this morning
