  • How did you know that Wilhelm Kempff is better than her? I prefer Elly Ney rather than Kempff, because all the harmonic melodies are equally played.. The best example is Kempff playing the 3rd mvt. of Moonlight Sonata, you notice there that the staccato in the 2nd part is not perfectly emphasis.

  • We can really feel what she play

  • ... i ... i'v never saw an artist that pssioned... she is realy amazing!!! in the first 2 moovements she almost made me cry ..... it's so amazing! she is perfect!

  • No sorry she is not better than Kempff. But she is till so awesome! Kempff gives it more feeling and is more metronomical than Elly.

Elly experiments with the dynamic range a little more than Kempff. But kempff's performance really takes in the listener.

Elly is not big on pedals and that is a good thing for musicians to reminded of-pedals are really there to enhance and sometimes when you pedal at the wrong places it can throw the music off.

  • she was incredible, but i still prefer the execution of gilels. the deutche grammophon one to be exactly. imho

  • Yeah there´s a lot of fire in this old woman :) xD

  • My god that ending is aboslutley spectacular!

  • Wow this is inspiring, I play piano and I hope that I too play like this when I'm 80.

  • amazing WOW better than Wilhelm K empff

  • Hats off !!

  • @Lisztianus1973 lucky

  • wow. hooly moly. she is so pro dude. look at her hands for an 80 year old looking woman. ive nvr seen my grams move close to that speed in any action

  • Thank you for posting this! I'd never heard of Elly Ney before, and I've never heard this movement played in such an emotionally diverse manner. Up until now I've been of the "faster is better" mindset when it comes to this movement, but not any more. Completely mesmerising...and such a depth of interpretation of this piece. What an amazing artist!!!

  • such passion and emotion in the pieces she plays, only a select few pianists have this talent and she is one of them, she makes the piano sing the notes enough to make you cry because the sound is soo beautiful. That....is the sound of a true pianist. Kudos to you Madame Ney, the world certainly misses your talents, but you will never be forgotten!!

  • Age never slowed this Queen of the piano down one bit.

  • I like Kempffs version best

  • I had no clue that something such as this, something so eloquently and fervently played, was apart of Moonlight Sonata. I had only ever listened to the first movement hitherto and had always suspected that this art was solely an escape for those experiencing depression. Such zeal. So lovely!

  • simply perfect!, bravo!, bravo!, I hope one day I might become a great piano player as she was...

  • @RivasDeAmat

I hope you will before her age on this video !! (even if late is better than never...) :-)

  • cancrizans, this was not intended as a slight. I was only pointing out a fact to

muege888. there was no offence intended. I have every respect for ANY artist, living or dead.

  • does anyone know the version that was published with the 90's game "earthworm jim 2"? that version is perfectly played. no midi file. someone should upload it. wait. i'll do it =)

  • @usnbernd If you want perfection watch lisitsa valentina play it.....

  • This movement i believe is set to ~168 bpm. I think this is a bit slower, but all the better, the intricacies of the melody really gets to shine. Such passion!

  • she's amazing!!!

  • @muege888 she's also dead...

  • @dunkymac22 really what is it with people who make these insinuations along the lines of "this person is dead so what they did is(somehow)devalued compared to what someone alive does?Really is it possible for someone to have so little brain function as to think like this?I'll take one of these sensitive, intelligent and thoughtful "dead people" to the BRAIN DEAD idiots running around today thinking they are big deals when they are among the most ignorant beings to ever live on this planet.

  • Goosebumps! Her face shows everything!

    Stunning...

  • Elly and wilheim have the same facial expressions. Brilliantly performed.

  • This is a magnificent performance ! I just can't stop listening to it.

  • 彈到吐血-0-''

  • its too fast i say , what do you think ?

  • its presto agitato, i think her speed is adequately

listen to gould, he is fast

  • Presto=VERY fast.

  • @sha6ar6oon

Listen to Evgeny Kissin, Mark Salman, Bernd Glemser, and all the other pianists. They play it much faster than Elly here

  • ok thanks , why did they give me thumbs down

i didnt mean to say that its bad , its really good !

  • sell it on ebay ! u will be 100$ richer , btw do u play MOzarts Fanstasy ?

  • 82 my god ive seen it all now.

    Bravo

  • Ms. Ney RIP. From this video the camera viewing her face showed us that she felt deeply her understanding of this Sonata at parts that spoke deep feeling and Elly showed us that wonerfully. And, the last few seconds Elly showed us the best ending I have veiwed so far.

  • my god, incredible!

  • she was 82 when playing this!

    So wonderful!

  • Terrific! Many may play it faster, but few with richer, more robust sound, more vigor or deeper understanding. Great force of character in this artist, who is quickly becoming a new favorite Beethoven player.

  • Beautiful and touching beyond words!

  • es increible, porque es una mujer que a pesar de su avanzada edad tiene un poder de interpretación maravilloso... BRAVOO

  • Look at her hands, close to the keys, quiet. No flailing, no useless, wasted movement at all. Glorious artists, who can play into their 80s, even their nineties, with verve and zest. In this, Ney is part of an elite group - Horowitz, Tagliaferro, Saint-Saens, Arthur Rubinstein, Horszowski, Plante. These and others played into advanced old age with panache. Hats off to Mme. Ney!

  • @Noshirm what do you mena by waste of movements? The only perfect playing by those standards would only be to be playing without having to thouch the piano. Only in one's mind can there be perfect movement's with zero waste. Isn't movement in itself waste?:D

  • @Ianthe22 You know perfectly well what I meant by these words: wasted movement - unnecessary movement - movement extraneous to the act of playing the piano efficiently. For perfect examples of wasted movement in playing, check out the poseurs out there today - gesticulating, lifting a hand up limply into the air, and so on. That's what I mean by wasted movement ! Throwing one's hands about, flailing at the keyboard - it's entirely unnecessary, looks absurd, and detracts from focused playing!

  • @Noshirm I agree with you that some of those "poseurs" are quite exaggerating in the ir movements, but that is a part of their playing. Movements like those can sometimes be more than "acting" and exaggerations. Timing is one thing for instance. Another thing is guiding audience or an expression of feelings.

  • @Ianthe22 Tbh i think most pianists wouldn't do such a thing. Plz give an example where a pianist does it. Oh yeah, why not choose a pianist who's "flailing" with his/her hand(s) while playing this piece:D.
