Yes you are correct, but when the Defensive line "gets smart" as you say it and start to cut the offensive line it just opens up the rest of the offense. The purpose of wedge is to scare the defense into playing the way I want them to play. Cutting offensive lneman just makes your defense easier to down blocl.
i love the wedge for the younger ages but once you hit high school i think it depends on your players. i remeber playing a really good wedge team in high school and killing them with a 5-3 eagle. our fornt 3 were real good and got push every play.
you might caall it a 5-3 TNT. its just a 5-3 with the center and guards covered. if those 3 guys are strong and good enough it can be bad for a wedge but that at the upper levels. i think in the young kids the wedge is unbeatable.
Nice WEDGES Coach !! I like my FB in the sniffer spot,it hides him a bit more I think. That motion is a lil slow for me. But whatever works for you is what its all about !! Good stuff

Wedges work well until the Defensive line gets smart enough to cut the Offensive lineman, creating a huge pileup with nowhere to go.
