I made these films back in 2005 to promote interest in these institutions and to evoke a sense the experience of incarceration. Just like the Forgotten Australians who once inhabited these child welfare institutions (Parramatta Girls Home, Orphanage and the Industrial School) the history of these buildings has been forgotten. We are now trying to have the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct dedicated as a national heritage site in acknowleging womens history and heritage.

This was the Parramatta Invalid & Lunatic Asylum, later Parramatta Psychiatric Hospital and today is Cumberland Hospital. Next door was the Roman catholic Orphan School, later to become Girls Industrial & training School, then Parramatta Girls Home and today is the Norma Parker detention centre for Women. This is a real place located in Fleet St Parramatta NSW.

Each ASYLUM film is about 2 institutions separated by the deadyard where the POV starts. Gate 1 is the old convict female factory (1821 -1847) later used a Lunatic Asylum Gate 5 (1847 to present ) Gate 2 is the Orphanage (1841-1886) Gate 3 and 4 are the same building firstly the Girls Industrial & Training School (1887 - 1960) then Gate 4 when renamed Parramatta Girls Home and its annex the Hay Girls Institution (1961 - 1974) and yes they have a dark history

@SilmeUmbarNumen it was a part of an old convict jail that was turned into a girls home (juvenile detention center) amongst other things.. it was known as Parramatta Female Factory, Roman Catholic Orphan School, Parramatta Asylum & Girls Industrial School.. it was all these things in one.. it has a very dark history

my mum was apart of the forgotten generation and was put in the girls home here.. this is the asylum wing but... it was a terible place from the storys i have read :(

It's part of the old woman's prison built next to the funny farm in Parramatta. Probably is haunted with all the convicts they hung around that area.
