  • Hah, a Sonic rip-off.

  • lol at the sonic clone comments. I don't see anyone going on every custom platformer and saying"you ripped off mario"

  • lol reminds me of sonic and mario pu togather

  • really cool

  • I too really love the music :D

  • Nice game, Check out my MMf2 games, I really show off what mmf2 can do!

  • Fuckin sonic clone...

You made that straight from the sonic engine, found online.

  • @koes007 A small amount of research would have saved you from being embarrassingly wrong here.

  • @koes007 Well, it does resemble a Sonic game because of the checkered ground and stuff but it plays nothing like one. Sonic games have acceleration and are based around moving quickly straight ahead while timing jumps and rolls correctly.

  • @GOE7Song

sonic is rip off of duke nukem and castlevania. Why? Ituses the same control behaviour and program environment. So this is clone of all clones that were cloned after duke nukem and castlevania. So we put an end on cloning speach. rofl

awsome game m8. Keep up the good work.

  • Reminds me of sonic, I like that combo system.

  • @macocco124 Of course it reminds you of Sonic. It's a complete ripoff of every element from Sonic, right down to the graphics.

  • how you make the enemy die when jumping on them?

  • @TheMariomaster33 i would make it that when the player collides with the enemy and their face downwards or there about, the player bounces and the enemy takes damage.

  • @Blobface07 i mean like how because im making a mario fan game and the character wont die when jumped on

  • "I'd polish". What does it mean, dude?

  • hi! could you help with me some MMF2 stuff? I've got most of down but springs for jumping are driving me crazy! I can't figure them out. : (

also have you found a way to make a platform possible to jump through from below so that you'll land on top of it?

  • could you give me the .mfa file?

  • i love MMF2! im making my first game can you tell me how i get it into a swf file?

  • Where do you get the sonic engine?

  • What's that level music? It's awesome

  • @TheBilly It's original, for the game, by me - so thank you very much :)

  • @DavidXNewton how did you make the music :D?

  • @xDanishGamerz It's done in Modplug Tracker.

  • Sonic 2 Engine..

  • Nice game there bud. I like it feels retro.

  • Thats cool!

  • Is that realy makes with multimedia fusion?

  • @TheLeonelschroeder It really is! You can look at the demo for yourself - crystaltowers2 co nr.

  • xD green hill zone yep this looks just like sonic

  • how long has this taken you?

  • Nice. I like how you used layers for the moving backdrop.

  • (Y)

  • Wow. Looks great! Very Sonic inspired!

Characters have similar colors, Music made with Genesis music, and GHZ inspired art design! I like it!

  • I played the 1st crystal towers, it was good, but please don't put in as many pits ;-;

  • Nicely done dude, i'm still noob at MMF2, but as i see this, i can learn alot from your video! :)

  • I live in walnut creek

  • .youtube.com/watch?v=MqsDmdm7eCg

This is a link to a video of my MMF2 game "The Final Specimen". I taught myself the program and have been making it for three and a half years, and still have a long ways to go.

  • lol Walnut Creek. Was that intentionally referencing the town in California or just an accident?

  • Me likey.

  • 10 years ago you would be a millionare for this

  • i am selling my (Multimedia Fusion 2) any 1 want to buy it. its in great condition . only used once

  • Walnut Creek? As in, Walnut Creek, CA? Are you from the Bay?

  • I'm not myself, but I do have family there - and you're right about the location! The first time I went to America in about 2004, I landed at San Francisco airport and saw the name on a sign outside, and instantly thought that it was the best platform game level name ever :)

  • Ha, awesome! Small world. :) Regardless, CC2 looks incredibly fun. When's the release date? I used to be a part of the indie game company Fallen Angel Industries (FAIND), if you remember Commando, Factor X, Super Ken Senshi etc. We primarily worked in MMF.

  • I do remember FAIND! It was a shame that they split up, because they were a great MMF group, and they only lasted until a few years after I discovered the online Click community myself.

As for a release date, let's not get too ambitious here ;) Well... at the moment I'm hoping for "some time in 2010, probably", so that I can finally get it off my mind after so long. Thanks!

  • Nice work, man! I've always liked the drums and bass instruments from Sonic, you use them well here.

  • One thing to say about Walnut Creek:

Holy Green Hill zone (from Sonic the hedgehog)!

  • Yes, I think it would be pointless to deny that the first level does draw a lot of inspiration from it :)

  • Good Game Man & Really Nice Music

  • Are you using a custom platform engine or the standard platform engine that comes with the application?

  • This is a custom movement - the basics of it are detailed in a tutorial I wrote for the site (under "Custom Platform Movement"), but I've extended it a bit since then.

  • Would you be willing to post a video tutorial or provide a link on a step-by-step written one? I know several people who would truly appreciate it. I can't believe that after all this time, ClickTeam hasn't made a solid enough standard platform engine that works as solid as the 8-bit games I used to play. Things like moving platforms are still broken when using their standard applications.

  • yes yes yes i too could use this tutorial if you havnt already posted it!

  • awsome work dude 5/5

  • What games other than sonic influenced Crystal Towers?

  • A whole lot of things - mostly the DOS games from the early 90s, and a few things that I've played since starting work on the game. The layout of the game is sort of similar to Mario 64 (though I hadn't played it when I started making this game), and there's a bit of Zelda-style ability gathering as well. And the display of your score during a jump came from the Tony Hawk games! It's just got a bit of everything :)

  • I like the sound off that. Right now, I'm actually playing Crystal Towers 1. Lol

  • dude tell me how i safe my game in crystal towers 1 >;DD?!

  • this is basiclly sonic

  • David your tutorial has been really helpful. I was wondering how do you make the room size bigger?

  • Reminds me of sonic that level.

  • I was wondering what you did for the music? Did you take this music from an existing game or was it composed by someone for you?

  • I wrote it. Using Modplug Tracker, played with the ModFusion object in MMF2 (which frustratingly doesn't have a working pattern jump action, so I had to split the ending music up into two files).

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, great work! That music is great!

  • Its looks pretty good. How easy is this software to use? Like what are the pro's and cons on it?

  • I'd definitely recommend it, it's worth downloading the demo at Clickteam's site. It's easy to get the basics working very quickly, and flexible enough (especially via extensions) to produce very competent-looking games.

It does have a couple of weaknesses, mostly in the way that game events are sometimes tied to individual levels and you have to keep copying them around, but you can mostly avoid this by planning ahead. It isn't noticeable until you get more ambitious :)

  • Cool. Can't wait to play your game when your done with it. Do you have the demo version?

  • Full Developer version :)

  • Will you ever make a platform tutorial? : )

  • I have! Youtube doesn't allow links, but... it's "Custom Platform Movement" under Tutorials, from Clickteam's front page.

  • How ironic I had your tutorial for the last 2 days lol. Well if I get stuck anywhere on your tutorial I'll ask you.

  • I must ask though, did you draw/make everything yourself?(Character, Backgrounds, Tiles, etc.)

If you did, what did you use to make them?

    PhotoShop?

  • The artwork's a combination of a few people's work, including my own - I went through a couple of graphics artists before finding one who produced most of the animated sprites (and the tiles are mine). The majority of the game's artwork is drawn pixel by pixel!

  • That graphic artist did one heck of a job!

  • Great work!!

  • This game looks amazing. Can't wait for it to be finished.

  • I crapped my pants.

Hats off to you good sir!

  • How do you do your character bounces on top of an object? Thanks.

  • WHEN DO WE GET TO PLAY!?!?!?!?!?!

  • Oh.. my god this is amazing *o* Im thinking of getting MF2 and this has literally pushed me to saving up for it! Can I ask a question, how hard is it to make a decent platforming game? I just mean designing wise not including music or sprites.

  • Thanks, I'm glad to inspire more people to try out MF2 - it has its weaknesses but I think it's definitely the best game creation tool around :)

Making a platform game isn't instant, but it's a lot easier than coding it from scratch - you'd want to avoid the default platform movement to avoid it feeling characteristically "like an MF2 game". There's a tutorial I wrote in the Clickteam site's Tutorials section about making a platform game, to help you get started (it works with the demo, too).

  • Its BEAUTIFUL! *sniff*

So when do I get to take a look at this new graphically enhanced version? :)

  • Hi there Circy, I seem to have been neglecting my playtesters a bit :) I'll definitely give you an email when I feel I can release a new version - it's difficult for me to remember how far it's come since the start, but the difference may surprise you! I just need to get what's playable into a form where it can all be reached from the start of the game.

  • Sounds good! :) Take your time and dont rush anything :) I think this game could be something truly special :)

  • Hey David, just wanted to show some support :) The game looks like it's a lot of fun to play! The sprite reworks are nice :)

  • are there like uprgrads for your magic so you can raise the maximum magic amunnition and the game and sprites just look amzing that i cant put in words something tells me this game and david have dedication

  • Thanks to your games it's inspired me i've built a few games on this engine but now i'm moving on to the new mmf2 becaue the last time i used it was when the games factory came out and i'\m a total noob again i guess i'll just have to work it out on my own.

  • i like what youve done with the main character. he looks a ton better.

  • Good to know, thanks - though that sprite rework wasn't mine, that was the result of someone with actual talent helping out ;)

  • Nice!

  • Ehm, his jumps look a little stiff. When he lands its like there is no recoil.

  • Can you explain what you mean by 'recoil'? I'm reworking the movement next, so now's a good time to mention it!

  • Like.. when he jumps and lands on the platform.. its stiff.

His legs doesn't show signs of shock/recoil from landing. Normally when a mammal jumps and lands their joints bend in some way to brace the impact.. however he just lands stiffly.

  • Ah, then it's an issue of animation - that's easier :) I'll see what I can do.
