  • The only problem with this game is that you just use a small portion of the screen for the main map where the game play is going on. This is an epic game, one of the great ones!

  • this game was the peak of my childhood

  • great review, glad you put this here

  • I only had this SNES version, and wish they make again .

  • @OBSysteme I tried it once, but I didn't like it, because..I don't know how to explain, but the whole game..something was not right. It just felt wrong.

  • @SirRasor I think I know what you mean. I can't explain it either. For starters, I never really could or did, figure out how to actually play it, LOL. I wanted/tried to like the game, but just couldn't get into. That is coming from a guy who as played & bought nearly every RTS/War Strategy, etc (& a good many turn based) game, made between 1985 & now.

  • One of the best games ever!

  • I played this too when it came out , however, how many people know the multiplayer did not work? I played this over the modem vs. friend and games were never in sync. He would see one thing, me , something totally different. I don't think they ever fixed it.

  • It was a good idea and fun but as a wargame it was lacking in depth. Really imbalanced too, building a catapult was tantanount to winning the game. But it was atmospheric for the era, it felt like a kind of model railway landscape. :)

  • i loved this game but i never did finish it, never got close, kind of ahead of its time but the interface and controls werent so easy to use

  • Good video, thanks. Most useful in determining if I'll like a game or not, wish there were more such videos on YouTube. In this case, I think I won't keep my unplayed Amiga version of Powermonger!

  • I'm I missing something I have Dosbox 0.73 running Powermonger and it doesn't look anywhere near as good graphics wise as the video above

  • Nice video. Your commentary was actually welcome and enjoyable. Most of the time when a user puts his/her commentary over top the game play I just feel like turning the thing off.

  • I agree. Glad you posted this video. I still play Power Monger on the Sega, and now I finally know that it's a stork bringing a new baby into town. I've wondered about that for quite some time.

  • a great game, i think i was 11 when i play it the first time on amiga... very difficult ;)

  • Things get interesting later on when you actually have to deal with other powermongers. Especially with 2 or even 3 other factions on the map. Nothing worse than trying to subdue a town, and in comes this other army and beats the crap out of both of you. Or you subdue a town, only for this other army to sweep in on the town with all the beat up inhabitants and convert it to their side in an instant. But it's great when 2 rivals destroy each other

  • I would love to see this remade for the DS. They just keep releasing Populous.

And Syndicate that would be ace too.

  • I Downloaded this game some time ago, because it looked cool, but i did not know how to play this game. Thank you I know now all I wanted to know.

The little angles and the troups around the general are exacly the same in Populous 3 as here in Powermonger.

  • you set aggression to 1 to so you do not kill hardly any of the townfolk, making your "get men" function much more useful. were you to fight under level 3 aggression, would you raze the town.

Inventions sometimes yield weapons so few can face many.

under level 1 aggression they will spare life at cost of their own, so bigger battles sometimes benefit from more aggressive settings.

  • I got this on the Snes when I was younger. Never figured out how to play it properly.

  • same here. i got it 4 megadrive and haven't got a clue how to play!

  • The Amiga version had an add-on which was set in WWI. It's been many years since I played it but as I remember one of the inventions was a biplane which was a lot of fun. I used the invention function a great deal.

  • I never got to play the WWI edition until recently as I didn't have the original manual! Curses! What an amazing game - I played it on the Amiga, this PC version seems really smooth - pretty impressive! I used to love building my armies and build catapults, even cannons if there were adequate resources! Awesome game..

  • thanks for the vid - i've been trying to get into this game again on the Amiga, and that's really helped me brush-up on the gameplay.

As mentioned, shame theres no inventions / mining stuff there, but i think i remember how that works anyway!

  • "Populous", "Populous II", and "Powermonger" are three masterpieces of the Amiga.

Nevertheless, as you pointed out, the game-play (for all three) tended to get redundant and tiresoe pretty fast.

They lacked the dynamism and spontanaity of "Sim City", "Mega Lo Mania" or "Battle Isle".

Perhaps you can one day do reviews for these as well?

But great job. One of the best game review videos I've seen in a while.

  • I liked the commentary. Clear, concise and just nerdy enough.

  • when are they gonna re-release it???!!!

  • this looks much slicker than on the Amiga, although I had many entertaining hours no the amiga with this.

  • i remember this.

  • Excellent commentary.

  • POWERMONGER!!! hell yea! i remember renting this from blockbuster before buying it for sega genesis and what blockbuster did was take out the small battery in the game box so you couldn't save, so i would take it apart and hook a 9v to it and was able to save! good ole' times.

  • I absolutely loved this on the Amiga, and Populous II. Wasn't it great to have archers.

A golden era of gaming. I completed all the maps before the official high score.

  • Great video! Powermonger was my favorite sega game.

  • This is my favorite game and I know everything about it :) Just ask what you need :D

My record on one of the maps: 267 troops :)

  • Ha! I knew there had to be a hardcore Powermonger fan out there somewhere!

  • That's true. That's the aspect of the game that I didn't show. It's just that I only had ten minutes (stupid YouTube). And the invention system is so tedious...you have little control over what you can actually make, they take forever to make and distributing your inventions is clunky since it uses the aggression buttons. And the only time you _have_ to use inventions is when you need to get your army to another island; then you'll need to make boats. That's why I left it out.

  • you didn't show how you can make weapons in the towns using the trees and metal mines!

  • Well, it really needs a mouse. Both the SNES and Sega CD versions required the mouse for their respective systems. And since the modern consoles don't really care about mouse-based games, I'm thinking...probably never.

  • hey so when is this game gonna get re released on PSP,PS2,x box 360????

  • i've played the amiga version on PSPUAE

like a lot of these old God games, this would probably work quite well on the DS. If only it were powerful enough for amiga emulation.

  • Yes thank you for this nice review... i owned hte SNES version at it looks very similar to this one... yes an i dont understand everything cause i was a little boy and didnt speak english ... very well :)

  • Very good review. Thanks for taking the time, I loved this game, although at the time I didn't fully understand it.

  • I loved this game,

  • Thanks! :)

  • Excellent blog once again super :)
