I wish I could talk to Mayor Nutter. I think he is a good Mayor, but...
My cousin is about 60 years old and works 50 hours a week. This week he snuck a cigarette down the subway when it was not busy because he missed his train. He got a citation and went to court, they want him to pay $167.00 bucks & 25 hrs of community service. That is a sick thing to do, this guy has health problems. With all the crime in this City you pick on good people?
It is a crime how bad PHA housing is in most places. There are grown adult men taking apartments when there are seniors and the disabled who are waiting for them, all because PHA doesn't want to let go of and sell the properties that it can't renovate and can't properly police and manage. Every single drug house in my neighborhood in SWCC is either a PHA property or a Housing Choice Voucher property, formerly known as Section 8, a program PHA also runs. That is the truth.
PHA housing in Philly in my neighborhood is run down, blighted, completed unrenovated since the 60s when this was acquired, and but for a few showpiece projects, there is no upgrades to most of the Scattered site properties. There is a lot of drugs. If by jobs, the mayor is referring to the out of control drug trade, then yeah, PHA provides a safe haven fo these drug dealers. PHA doesn't manage the properties it has, and is just too large a bureaucracy to be an effective landlord.
