The conditions that these horses live in are obsurd. It doesn't matter if the men beat them, the point is that horses do NOT belong in the city. Most of these horses have never in their lives been able to graze peacefully in a pasture where they belong. They are constantly breathing in the car feumes, which causes lung problems, not to mention the fact that they carry around 1,000lb+ all day everyday. They live in a building, and in the end are sent to Japan to be killed for slaughter.

My folks live on Park right near there. I do worry about those horses. I can't say I have any pity for the Mercedes. The horses, for the most part, appear to be well cared for. I don't think Horse Draw Carriages should be banned (PETA people, do you want to pay for the horses feeding when they're no longer owned by the carriage companies, or supervise their selling to the kill buyers who ship them off to Mexico?) I do think that it should be strictly regulated which would help the horses much more than a banning would.

Carmelo Vargas was the driver of the stable on 538 west 38th street. (west side livery). The carriage is registered to Lorenzo Riccobono 5, of Pennsylvania. Riccobono family were found guilty of animal cruelty in Pennsylvania.  I am not sure of the relationship. Consumer Affairs can provide you so information on this man.

Very interesting video taken when Smoothie was killed. The man interviewed is a Mr. Watkins from Virginia, a tourist ... not a driver. He states "the horse was not attended to." It was he who got the second horse who also spooked, running out and crashing into a car. He then tied him to a tree. The drivers were off somewhere paying no mind to their charges. If Smoothie's driver were alert, he may have been able to prevent a tragedy, when Smoothie began to show signs of being upset.

This was so tragic. the man talking saved the other horse. it is not a crime to kill a horse in NYC. they will not try to locate the drummer that did this crime, by beating the drum in the horse"s ear. i read the updated law on animal abuse in NY. according to the law this was a crime. it was murder, and yet no charges will be brought against the person that did this. i thank the man that saved the other horse.
