  • The point many here have missed is that 'Get You Back' is an order of magnitude more difficult to play than 'Flight of The Bumblebee'. Not that he'd have wasted his time, but I'm sure Shawn could have played FOTB at Vega's speed with some practice. Shawn was a once-in-a-lifetime musician, we were lucky to have him, RIP Master.

  • What a talent the world lost.....

  • For those who say Shawn is very Eric Johnson like tone its the other way around. Shawn was just so incredible inspiring so many!!! His technique speed its all perfect. He was simply and still is The Best!!

  • what a tone

  • @yunie747

just to shut everybody up about this speed thing:

    watch?v=sVHVXopRmI8

doctorhotlicks has the OFFICIAL guiness world record for guitar speed playing flight of the bumblebee at 600 bpm with 16th notes. that's 40 nps and that is OVER twice as fast as shawn has ever picked and close to twice as fast as shawn has ever played period. shawn isn't the fastest, not anymore. he is still the most technically advanced and i think he is still the best, but he isn't the fastest so quiet people.

  • @YngwieAteMe Well, that guy couldn't even nail the piece at the slowest speed. But perhaps we should all just agree that he is zomgtehfastezt so guitar playing can move on...

  • @hmm2112

hmm, i wonder who i should trust, a random guy on youtube, or both guiness and the universal record database. it's a tough choice, i think i'll take a while to decide.

  • @YngwieAteMe Trust your ears.

  • @hmm2112

yeah, because ears can accurately tell if somebody playing 40 nps is being clean or not. at those speeds it's absolutely impossible to just listen and be accurate. btw watch?v=KSfyjUdkY98 the record was recorded with a cell phone and his tone is ironically much clearer here. my ears tell me that it's clean and so does the program i use to slow audio down and guiness AND the universal record database. it's the official record and it's clean.

  • @YngwieAteMe Just listen to earlier videos by him - when he plays it at lower speed it's not very tight..

  • @kuronity

some things are much harder to play at slower speeds. any experienced shred guitarist know this.

  • @YngwieAteMe Yeah, if it would be something else than playing the chromatic scale up and down..

  • @kuronity

erm, no. plenty of things are harder to play slow down.

  • @YngwieAteMe I wont argue with you about it, this kind of petty stuff is exactly the sort of thing that makes the guitar playing scene such a drag.

  • @hmm2112

no, you make it a drag. you don't have to pay attention to the comments board.

  • In terms of speed, it's pretty damn close with Shawn and Rusty, though I think that Lane is slightly faster. But as other people hae said, it doesn't matter, and contrary to popular belief, Cooley has actually done some really good stuff, Jazzmine's Song and Dark Matter are 2 good examples of Rusty Cooley Music.

  • @yunie747 Rusty who?

  • Sorry guys, but all this talk of speed and who is faster, Lane or Cooley misses the point entirely of who Shawn was as a musician. There's a reason why it all slowed down at the end. The master knew that speed was simply an additional color to be used on the canvas he was painting. Compared to Lane, most extremely fast guitar players sound like musical typewriters.

  • Faster than Rusty ? 1000x faster with stupendous lines . Shawn is underrated!!!

  • the bassist here is dtf

  • ... He is faster. Is that the only thing that matters? He commanded his instrument, polyadept, better than any other guitarist I have ever heard, as of june 2011.

  • i love shawn .. but this is a song that neal schon would tear up, just in a diff way, love see both play togetheri just love that cutting schon sound

  • i love shawn .. but this is a song that neal schon would tear up, just in a diff way, love see both play together

  • @yunie747 Rustey - 15 - 16 nps

    Shawn Lane 19 nps

    Della Vega 17 - 18 nps

    :)

  • @DiminishedTB Della Vega was super sloppy in the faster takes.

  • @DiminishedTB

no, della vega hit 21 nps. it was just sloppy spastic arm vibrations.

  • Right guys, we get it, Shawn is faster then Rusty Cooley, I think yuni747 knows that by now.

  • @yunie747 Wrong. He is faster

  • Lol, loving the bassist's hot pants.

  • I have to listen each live version of this song at least once every day.

  • @yunie747 no, shawn is more fasther than rusty, shawn still the record guiness of most speed guitarrist in the world with 18 notes per second and rusty 16

  • not only can shawn play faster than rusty, but he sounds a lot better too

  • @yunie747 Believe me, hes faster and I think rusty would even admit to that.

  • @yunie747 you poor fool, there's quantifiable evidence to the contrary. who gives a floop about speed anyways

  • @yunie747 ...seriously...you should be sentenced to listening to CC Deville for 20 years straight with no time off for good behavior for even metioning cooley in the presence of the one and only Shawn Lane. Faster?....At Lane's level does it matter. NOBODY uses speed as creatively and as tastefully as Shawn Lane. And...let's say that cooley is faster (which I don't believe he is), that's like saying a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 is faster than a Porsche Carrera GT. Big friggin' deal!

  • @yunie747 lol

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos probably bcuz shawn is a consummate musician and cooley is just a shredder. youtube is filled with...interesting people. does it even matter if shawn is faster or not? not to me in a million years. shawn was a brief glimpse of heaven in human form. period.

  • @yunie747

shawn lane is faster. Rustey cooley plays 16.5 nps while shawn played 18 nps.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos he does not seem to play as fast.any song in particular were i can see this so called speed of his? 0.0

  • @yunie747 Many outro solos of Get you back are blistering fast.

Not really sure is he faster than Rusty, but c'mon, who cares?

Both of them are amazing guitarists

  • @yunie747 go watch not again from reh power licks.

  • shorts in the back ground worn with no irony what so ever!

  • I am sure others have brought it up, but the solo starting at 5:12 begins about 30 seconds of the most insane guitar playing I have ever seen... the wide intervals, note grouping and string skipping are just jaw dropping.

Thanks so much for posting these!

  • @yunie747 ha! Shawn Lane is the fastest hands down!

  • Lol for the bass player, how can you wear those shorts in a concert? xD

Of course that Shawn was faster than Rusty! If you ask Rusty, he will tell you this also (it was his guitar idol).

What an awesome song and guitarrist!

  • @yunie747 Rustey plays in more BPM but not "faster" than lane, as lane plays more Nps

    Cooley 16-17nps Lane 19-20 nps

  • Shawn was, is, and always will be, incomparable. As scary as his technique was, the passion and intensity with which he played always came shining through. To the OP, thank you for all these great clips of Shawn, keeping his memory and music alive and delighting his many fans world-wide.

  • it's all in the wrist

  • Only ShawnLane solo I will probably ever have the feeble minded understanding to like.

  • I have listened to this song hundreds of times over the years and it's always new every time. This is truly incredible to watch live! He was lightning fast and so passionate! I have heard any guitarist that played like him ever. He was one of a kind. His website is really cool too! "Powers of Ten" highly recommended. I have had it for years and LOVE IT!

  • R.I.P. Shawn Lane, one of the last truly magnificent musicians to grace the planet.

  • So psyched on those shorts.

  • Wow Shawn Lane is amazing... is that Richard Simmons on bass? lol

  • I'm gonna start spending more time in elevators.

  • would loved to have seen him live, what a player

  • paul gilbert and shawn lane play different styles of music..dont compare.

  • That's classic! I have not listened anything better than this, absolutely flawless..

  • what the? the part in the end is just blisterring fast !! faster than rusty i guess...

  • Yeah, and the scary part is how relaxed he is pulling it off!!!

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos

do you know what pickups he used in his charvel? i heard they were the dimarzio paf pros in the bridge and the neck, but i want to be sure. any help would be great. R.I.P. shawn lane.

  • I'm not quite sure what pickups Shawn used in which guitars. Sorry.

I know he had custom wound pickups in his 'Powers of Ten' guitar (Ibanez Ghostrider).

  • I don't know how you can make an argument for any other guitar player being the best ever after having watched this

  • @Kingding6 Watch Stanley Jordan play "Willow weep for me" It's hard to compare but definitly in the same league as Shawn.

  • paul gilbert is simple compared to shawn Lane

  • @magetarg

im sorry, but your comment reeks of fail. shawn lane has WAY more feeling than paul gilbert, is not boring, and you are a massive hypocrite because paul gilbert's songs practically made completely of exercises.

  • @Fluffypopcicle I don't see the point of calling me hyprocrite has far I tell my mind! That's not because Paul's a great teacher and use a lot of exemples from his songs in his video that you can say their made from exercice. But in the end, if you like wanking elevator music it's your choice!

  • @magetarg

once again you fail. shawn lane is not elevator music and neither is the stuff i listen to. if you like calling decapitated, iron maiden, judas priest, and all my other favorite bands elevator music you need some help. R.I.P. shawn lane B.I.H. you.

  • @Fluffypopcicle you should know that taste and colors can't be discussed even yours are really shitty

  • @magetarg

really? i talk about green, red purple, blue, and lots of delicious colors all the time :P i win :D

  • @magetarg both paul gilbert and shawn lane are legends. they are the best of the best.

  • @Kingding6 .....Watch Rice With The Angels, Atlanta Drums and Percussion. I believe there are 2 performances but one is particularly explosive. What's left of my brain oozed out of my thick skull upon watching that one. The recorded version on Personae (Hellborg,Lane, and Sipe) is phenomenal!

  • \m/

    a genius!!

  • Beautiful music...

  • This is simply one of the greatest pieces of guitar playing ever!!! Absolutely amazing, what a tragic loss to the music world.

His feeling and phrasing is just jaw dropping, such beautiful melodies. Will have to check more of Shawn, how can anyone call themselves a guitar player and not admire this man and his playing. Very Eric Johnson like tone, and that one tapped note just made me shake my head in disbelief, so tasteful.

That climb at 6:38 is astounding. Perfect guitar player RIP!!!!

  • 6:30 so aweeeeeeeeesome

  • the shorts killed it

  • Shawn Lane my total favourite, what a beautiful genius he was, my favourite of his songs here too.

  • Thankfully, this video is actually synced, unlike the majority of the others from this performance. Not that I am blaming MyShawnLaneVideos in any way since it's always been from other users.

    Great up.

  • love the shorts!!!! great fackin song!

  • i love this version...the fast solo at the end is much longer than in the other vid.........LOVE IT!

  • This is REAL talent !

  • it's so hard to put intense emotion in solos as fast as his.

  • Luckily Shawn manages to do just that.

  • True that...ALWAYS!!!

    R.I.P. Shawn. You are missed...

One of a kind, and they'll NEVER be another quite like him!

  • Just wanted to say one more thing... This guy was a master of the Tremolo Bar. He uses it with such grace and skill, its just amazing. And what tone he has as well. As unique and cool as Eric Johnson's...

  • I gotta agree with all of that! Funny that you mentioned Eric Johnson's tone, because I've compared their tones before also (not too much gain; warm & round; echo/delay!) BTW, they were mutual admirer's of each other's playing too!

As over-the-top as Shawn was sometimes with his breathtaking speed, I think most missed out on Shawn's subtleties! Also, his phrasing is WAY underrated. Did ayone notice that he right-hand-tapped ONE-NOTE there just to punctuate a melodic-phrase.

    AWESOME!!!

  • Yes i did notice that, and i agree his phrasing is under rated, and i've been able to replicate his tone pretty decently, i have a fender hotrod deluxe and a nady TD-1 OD pedal, and i can get it pretty close, scooped up treb a little and alot of mids it sounds great, im pretty sure thats the OD pedal he used as well

  • The best tone comes from the fingers

a low trebel, mid to low range distortion

and a whole lot of experimenting

    ;)

  • perfect music

  • dudeeeeeeeee. shawn lane was what steve vai dreams of being haha.

  • shawn was beautiful

  • GFD! This dude is off the hook as they say! Unbelievable. From 5 mins on to the end this is just pure bliss! What a great job!!!! Blows me away!

  • oooooh

    shawn lane with saxophone!

i didnt know he had a saxophonist in his band!

    awesome.

  • Yes, Todd Bobo..... he played Sax on nearly all of the PoT Band gigs (though he wasn't there for the "Musicians Institute" gig on the 5th Feb 1993). Todd also played sax on the official "Powers of Ten: Live" cd.

  • Does shawn ever use sweeps?

  • Shawn did have just a couple of sweep shapes/patterns he used to sometimes use, but very rarely. Shawn made more use of his own 'one note per string' technique rather than using sweeping or tapping (though he did sometimes do two hand tapping back in the 80's).

  • This song has one of hardest(and most painful)licks ever in a solo. Not only very fast but the distant your hand has to stretch during those fast passage, made Shawn Lane the true king of speed. It took me a long time to master the outro solo! (one of the lick shapes are 16 to 12 to 9 fret! Which makes it nearly impossibly for anyone with small hands.)

  • ohhh such an inspiration makes me want to grab my guitar even if a had been playing for 12 hours straight it doesnt matter ! this is reall music!!!!!!! not that shred music without feelings of today ! the new generation of guitar players need to change that ! AND NOW!!!

  • sorry i thumbed you down! made a mistake! I agree with you 100%!

  • What a beautiful melody

  • daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn that was freaking badass...

  • F'n beautiful man, just beautiful.

  • I think this is my favorite performance of this song that Shawn did that I'm aware of, It is perfect.

If anyone were to pay homage to Shawn with a version of "get you back", Guthrie would also be my choice. Not just because he could play it right, but because he'd do it with taste.

  • I'd like that guthrie govan do a big hommage cd of shawn lane

    it would be awsome

  • Yeah... i was just thinking lately that i'd love to see/hear Guthrie have a crack at doing a version of "Get You Back" in the way Shawn did it Live, with the long extended Improv solo.

  • well not exactly what your after - but guthrie did cover it in a recently guitar mag if you want the audio..

  • Yeah, i have that already.... Guthrie included links to a couple of my YouTube videos in that article.

  • lol i never bothered checking the links cause your vids were already up - nice one :o)

  • Yes, that'd be GREAT!

Although in the true spirit of improvisation, it'd be MUCH different than Shawn, but that's OK! Guthrie is AMAZING in his own right, and he's certainly capable of developing an AWESOME improv/solo. However, when you hear how reverently Guthrie (and EVERY other AMAZING guitarist who knew of Shawn) speaks of Shawn's abilities, talent, and intellect, you get the feeling that Guthrie would rather NOT subject himself to any sort of "comparisons."

    Just IMO!

    Peace.

  • rip shawn,

truly the greatest to ever pick up the electric, i feel like i'm 13 again when i listen to you play, i feel in complete awe of you phrasing, you make the electric guitar cry and sing, the phrase 0.33 to 0.40 is spine tingling.

  • the king

  • this song always puts me in a good mood. so cheerful.

thanks again for posting all these clips.

  • totally blew my mind away. will always miss you Shawn.

  • supreme

  • i want his tone

  • it's all in the fingers :D

  • Respect, Shawn!

  • Cool, a little twist in this video with the saxaphone. I like it!

  • Simply the best.

  • Not only was Shawn an unbelievable guitarist or an amazing pianist, he was a MONSTER musician that the words to describe his monstrosity have not been invented yet. He was a guitarist's guitarist, a musician's musician. He listened to, wrote, and played in practically every major style of music. And yes, this song has his best "improvised-feel" solo in my opinion, especially on the album, which kinda sucks in a way, since it was cut short when he was really starting to get it on.

  • He should have let the solo run for around 30 sec more or so, but then again, I don't think the world was ready for the 30 sec that were deleted lol.

  • I couldn't dissagree more.

  • LOL, what's a monster musician to you? Shawn played all style of western music and also played eastern like no one did before him on guitar.Watch any video of him playing piano if this is not a monster musician give me some example to show your point.

  • the ultimate musician/songwriter I would say.

  • This is it!

Thanks so much, don't know how i missed it!

    Made my day

  • shawn lane is out of this world. beautiful music.

  • favorite shawn lane song

his tone is absolutely amazing...out of this world..hes sooo clean too..

  • breathtaking!!!

  • Shawn Lane was absolutely amazing. His Powers of Ten album is probably among the best instrumental albums ever. Rest in Peace Shawn.
