Little trivia here. The CGI here is done by Ray Harryhausen. The song "Worried about Ray" by the Hoosiers is about the loss of Ray's CGI works in the modern world. In fact the music video itself is done using his CGI techniques
Still one of the greatest special effects sequences of all time, and a beautifully choreographed fight scene unmarred by the hyper fast editing and extreme close ups that ruin so many current action scenes.
As an artist, I value any kind of art created by skillfull, human hands infinitely more than something done by a computer. If CGI is also a time consuming process, then how is it so advanced from stop-motion? Isn't it supposed to be a labor saving method? I just respect stop-motion more. Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen were true ARTISTS in every sense of the word.
To everyone comparing CGI to this. It is basically the same thing, except you do it in a computer, and that means that you can automate a lot of it, thus making it a lot easier and realistic.
Older CGI, like from the 90s, were not very good, but you cant compare this to well made modern movies, I bet you havent even noticed where its been used in most places.
This scene is none the less brilliant, even by todays standards. Realism isnt everything ;)
This is by far the most groundbreaking effects in any movie.
The problem is that older movies like these used special effects to tell a story, while films like avatar used a story to tell special effects.
Personally I think this scene still looks amazing. most GCI films lack grit, they're all so sterile and flawless. These skeletons look like they're really there. Avatar looked like a big colourful disney cartoon.
@Vidyadude: Okay, so it's motion capture... Call it whatever you want, it still looks flat, weightless, and soulless. The stuff floats, stretches, and richochets all over the place just like in a Road Runner cartoon - but that's supposed to be a cartoon!
@Vidyadude: First, I'm not an "idiot" if I refuse to be brainwashed in the belief that CGI is so "wowee" realistic just because it's the latest technology in visual effects. Second, any "idiot" knows stop-motion requires a much greater amount of patience, concentration, skill and craftsmanship than CGI, in which a technician programs and manipulates a computer to create the actual effects. It takes time, but it's more about computer/tech savviness than it is about artistic talent and ability.
@kovik62 CGI isnt as easy to make as you think, especially not if you want it to be good. I bet stop-motion is easier to do if you just do some small stuff with it, but if you want to do a big battle-scene like this, CGI wins, because when you made the initial models and so on, the animation bit isnt nearly as hard as stop-motion. But it is in no way "easy". And your idea of art is a bit skewed, are you saying that because something is made with a computers help it isnt art?
Why would it be done better these days? If you have a whole move all about Aliens. Can you grasp how much work it would be to fluidly animate that in stop motion? It would look silly, just like it did in the old star wars movie.
As a boy when it was released in 1963 I utterly loved this movie & still love it today. I read recently on Wikipedia that this marvellous skeleton sword-fighting scene alone, less than 7 minutes long, took 4 months to shoot. Along with the man of bronze Talos scene, Ray Harryhausen created two of the greatest spectacles ever committed to film & all without the use of computer animation.
Are you seeking truth? Search for "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then click on "The Present" to open it. What it says will blow your mind.
For it's time, it's a true masterpiece. Doesn't compare to the stuff in say "District 9" in terms of visual believability and realism but for what they had this is amazing.
Some movies have special effects scenes that defy time, like the T Rex chasing the jeep in Jurassic Park, The water tentacle from The Abyss, the T 1000 emerging from the puddle of metal in the steel mill in Terminator 2 Judgement Day, King Kong on top of The Empire State Building in King Kong, The stained glass knight from Young Sherlock Holmes, this too is one of them
these are classic films .FACT- the sml crew of animators ,that made this first sort of Flim ,unfortunatly died before telling anybody else how it was done????? (Sinbad,Jason and the argonauts) therefore up until this very day ,this type of film cannot and hasnt been able to be copied .As like i say ,the sml amount of animator s keeped it secret till they died ...Without telling a soul ...strange but true .......

This film costs 1 million to make. Laughable compared to todays expensive flicks that do not hold a candle to this. Harryhausen was the George Lucas of his time.
A defining moment in cinema history and a testament to creativity and innovation. An indelible reminder of the genius that Ray Harryhausen brought to the screen.
What was the magician doing whilst the skeletons were fighting ? was he waiting for the skeletons to return if they had killed all 3 men? Also would the skeletons have just disappeared after the fight?
Its all make believbe my mum used to tell me everytime i watched this, it scared the pants off me when i saw this scene. by the way they are people in those costumes, not cgi actors!
And i have a query, at the begining when the skeletons are rising up from the ground whats stopping them from falling back down again lol
The problem with stop motion and even CGI isn't mostly how it looks, but how it moves. Stop motion can be extremely fluid, but never as smooth. Good CGI will look and move realistically.
Check out "Robocop 2", a great example of stop motion done right. For CGI fans, "District 9" is mandatory. Effective and meticulous use of CGI.
I unabashedly hold to my view that stop motion offers an evocative, intriguingly dreamlike quality that's totally missing with CGI. There's a warm feeling knowing that the animator's sweat and tears went into that puppet as he manipulated life into it, frame by frame. CGI is an efficient, yet completely soulless process that has an annoyingly cartoonish look to it. It's really not as ultrarealistic as people make it out to be.
You idiot. Most CGI is done with motion capture. How can it look 'cartoony' if it's done with motion capture. Also, do you realise how hard Pixar animators have to work. At best they can animate ONE MINUTE a day. That's not hard work?
I feel sorry for the kids today with their souless CGI effects driven movies like "Transformers." This - THIS is how it's done! God bless you Ray Harryhausen!
@dublinboyo Don't be retrograde... a man born in the 1900 would say about this film: "I feel sorry for those who need this animated puppets to feel emotion, we only needed some plates and strings to make UFOs".
And kids from today will say, watching future movies: "Aah, all those holograms are so souless compared to our good ol' Industries of Light and Magic effects".
@dublinboyo When I clicked on this video, I just knew there was going to be atleast ONE person bashing CGI. Infact, my first thought was to look at the top comment expecting a comment like yours. I'd rather not say anything else, because no words can define how much I disagree with you or people who share a similar opinion towards CGI. Happy hating...what a life hey? :D
@EtienneLF Although it is true that CGI is more fluid than stop-motion, the latter has one advantage:
IT'S A MODEL IN REAL LIFE.
And no matter how advanced technology gets, there will always be a gap between CGI and reality. There will always be a few details in CGI that make it conspicuous, so the audience can always tell what is real and what isn't.
For an effect that is fluid yet a real object, search "animatronics".
@XanthusPictures Stop motion models are real but they are not actually there in the scene with the actor, they're added in afterwards I believe. And animatronics are only good for close ups where its not necessary to show the entire body. I have nothing against stop motion, especially if you consider how good it gotten using "Corpse bride" as an example. But just think to your self, films like jurassic park and cloverfield would not have been possible without the aid of CGI.
just my opinion im gonna be 22 this year but this film was my favorite as greek myths and all and yes the fight with the skeletons was priceless HR was a trua genius!!
Great stuff! One of the reasons I liked the game Titan Quest was because of how skeletons broke out of the ground just like this. Ah rainy Sundays in front of the telly watching this with my dad, happy memories.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! I laugh so fucking hard when they're like slowing walking then suddenly have that ridiculous battle cry. My friend and I were watching this one night and had no idea what would happen, then when they did that we were like crying from laughing.
One of the greatest pieces of work from the god of stop-motion, Ray Harryhausen.
With stop-motion, you really have to put all your heart into every inch of movement, and it shows here. The animation is awesome, and it's easy to forget that actors and skeletons are not really on the same screen - something CGI rarely accomplishes for me because it's so artifical.
Looking back, this scene alone might be the reason why the undead will always be my favorite faction in any kind of video game ^^ !
@lechuk the only way id be intrested in a reamake of this is if there did all the creaters in stop mothion animation and if there added more stuff tbh
@lechuk the only way id be intrested in a reamake of this is if there did all the creaters in stop mothion animation and if there added more stuff tbh
Is it the 2000 telemovie version? Because I have seen that one, but it's different enough from this one that I wouldn't really call it a remake...what I meant by my original post, you see, was Hollywood hasn't done an overblown remake of this film like they did with Clash Of The Titans. I hope this clears up my statement. =)
@Scruffy193 No worries, it's a film from the early 60's i think(don't quote me) so it may be before your time just a bit. It might seem a bit dated compared to today's movies but when i was young it was pure gold.
All I can say is this - thank heavens this film hasn't been remade! Everything about JatA is awesome; the acting, Harryhausen's monsters, the score, the scenery, everything...
Yes, one of the coolest scenes ever. Really appreciate how difficult this is to pull off cinematically. He is melding two visual tracks meticulously, the live action with stop action. And remember, with reference to Nightmare Before Christmas, RH does it with no Computer Generated anything, nothing digital. This is a gift to kids forever (or as long as there are kids and ways to show them films). Thanks.
I just love this film. The only gripe that I have is with Youtube (?) when the video stutters along with stops and restarts. Something needs to be done about that, as it spoils one's enjoyment.
Harryhausen IS God. He is Zeus himself. His movies are so entertaining that movies nowadays with loads of CGI can't compare to his mastery with stop motion. My hero.
LOl in Percy Jackson book 3 they do the smae thing except accidentally with a Snow Leopard's (i think) teeth. And it spawns orange stripey kittens that paly in the dirt with each other. Cuteness and Comedy combined with a reference to a classic scene = WIN!
A great thing about this film is the musical score by the great Bernard Herrmann. Listen as the priest tosses the teeth on the ground. That's the Dies Irae, a 13th century Latin poem and Gregorian chant about judgment day. Throughout music history, it has always been used to symbolize death and the macabre. Most film goers don't catch this, but no one needs to. Good film scores enhance action and mood, and Hermann knew exactly what he was doing. Very clever and very effective.
Hats off to Ray Harryhausen - the godfather and pioneer of special effects - I went to the movies to see this when I was a kid - loved it then and still do - wonderful stuff!
Ray Harryhausen was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of his time. He could give a few pointers to todays special affects artists. I was 10 years old when I saw this movie in 1963. And this scene still has me uneasy and amazed some 47 years later!!!
The photochemical film process of bi-packing elements together in an optical printer, traveling matte techniques, aerial image printing, or in-camera latent imaging, was so mind-blowingly complex, that almost nobody understood it. People have it incredibly easy today, because they have a miniature optical printer on their PC called After Effects. Digital technology has made the complex photochemical process obsolete, and today’s digital effects, a cakewalk.
Harryhausen actually animated a scene with the decapitated skeleton crawling around on it's hands and knees looking for it's severed skull, but Harryhausen deleted it because he felt it slowed the scene down. i'd love to see it!
Little trivia here. The CGI here is done by Ray Harryhausen. The song "Worried about Ray" by the Hoosiers is about the loss of Ray's CGI works in the modern world. In fact the music video itself is done using his CGI techniques

Good old movies. Not interested in remakes...

@Hashplant47,
Can't be that great if I've never heard of it, right? Is it terrible?
Scruffy193 8 months ago
@Scruffy193 It's an old movie, probably before your time.
Hashplant47 8 months ago
@Hashplant47,
Is it the 2000 telemovie version? Because I have seen that one, but it's different enough from this one that I wouldn't really call it a remake...what I meant by my original post, you see, was Hollywood hasn't done an overblown remake of this film like they did with Clash Of The Titans. I hope this clears up my statement. =)
Scruffy193 8 months ago
@Scruffy193 No worries, it's a film from the early 60's i think(don't quote me) so it may be before your time just a bit. It might seem a bit dated compared to today's movies but when i was young it was pure gold.
Hashplant47 8 months ago
This has better fight scenes than most modern movies.

All I can say is this - thank heavens this film hasn't been remade! Everything about JatA is awesome; the acting, Harryhausen's monsters, the score, the scenery, everything...
Scruffy193 8 months ago
@Scruffy193 Got bad news for you. It's already been remade.

My hero.

These guys were great soldiers, they lasted how long exactly outnumbered by the undead with swords and spears? lol...
NebojsaAlexandrovsk 9 months ago
LOl in Percy Jackson book 3 they do the smae thing except accidentally with a Snow Leopard's (i think) teeth. And it spawns orange stripey kittens that paly in the dirt with each other. Cuteness and Comedy combined with a reference to a classic scene = WIN!
Smallvillenerd 9 months ago
A great thing about this film is the musical score by the great Bernard Herrmann. Listen as the priest tosses the teeth on the ground. That's the Dies Irae, a 13th century Latin poem and Gregorian chant about judgment day. Throughout music history, it has always been used to symbolize death and the macabre. Most film goers don't catch this, but no one needs to. Good film scores enhance action and mood, and Hermann knew exactly what he was doing. Very clever and very effective.

Ray Harryhausen was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of his time. He could give a few pointers to todays special affects artists. I was 10 years old when I saw this movie in 1963. And this scene still has me uneasy and amazed some 47 years later!!!
aholmes99 11 months ago
