It's all to do with the science of light and the size of the droplet or ice particle the light is being refracted/reflected.

Summer doesn't mean a thing at those altitudes. And the parts falling come from above the cloud cover, punching a hole through the layer shown. And I am seeing things I have never seen before in this isolated ecosystem in the middle of the Pacific. Why are these clouds forming NOW, every day, when I never saw them before in 35 years??? Our entire weather pattern was stable and predictable for centuries, and now everyday is a freakin surrealistic nightmare! We have no pollution nor industry & volcanic activity is easily identified, so??

The get their name because a supersaturated area of the atmosphere gets "triggered" (can't think of a better word, sorry) and water begins to condense and freeze. These particles then FALL, leaving STREAKS in their passing. These will then become a cloud in the center of the resulting "hole", which is why some are called "hole punch" cloud.

These particles then FALL, leaving STREAKS in their passing. These will then become a cloud in the center of the resulting "hole", which is why some are called "hole punch" cloud.
