Could you help me out? Out of all the parts of beatles songs that I play on guitar none of them have me as mystified as the linking riff in this son. Bit of advice would be good. Thanks :)
@megastoobs Download the video and play it in slow motion. The riff uses all double-stops (two strings played at a time). You can use Windows Media Player or Windows Movie Maker to play it in slow motion or even frame by frame.
Can't tell you how great it is to see this!!!! The man was so creative and inventive that he played very unusually, and you've done a masterful job figuring this out. I never could, and I tried numerous times. AWESOME JOB!! THANK YOU!! Can't wait to check out your other videos!
Dude thank you so much. I want to do a cover of this with my band and I like to do the original arrangements for Beatles tunes. Figuring out the bass and the chords is easy but the lead guitar is always more difficult. Rock on! :)
dear sir.. I've seen all your videos and is just amazing to see and get the little details on GH's lead guitar... nice guitar, fine play, cool amp setting and the effort to "teach us" how to improve our cover. Greetings from Chile, here we love too The Beatles..! Up the music 4ever..! =)
Thank you very much for posting this video. You play that song flawlessly. You inspired me to purchase a Gretsch, love the sound and the look (although I'm still not sure what all the bells and whistles do). Anyway, quick question, what is your choice for strings?
@romeronash Thanx for your comment. Re strings, wire wound with the high E string at either .010 or .012. Despite the story about the Beatles sound being attributed to Pyramid Gold Flat Wounds, I believe they used what ever was available. Any good brand will do. On my 12 string Rick, I use the Rick strings which are flatwound -- I believe this is what Harrison used also. After many years of playing and recording I cannot tell the difference between string brands.
This has got to be exactly the way George Harrison played it. This is my FAVORITE song. The last 3 chords at the end of the song are different than the way they are played during the rest of the song. You got this down PERFECT!
@thebeatles1595 I think you're asking about the D7 chord (C7 played at the third fret). The high E string is not played, just the A, D, G and B strings.
thebeatles1595:For the Lead Guitar Secrets Videos I used the Vox AD15VT set to Vox AC30TB with max treble, min mid and min bass. For the cover version videos I used an old Carvin amp. The guitar and recording method have the most influence on the final sound.
@thebeatles1595 : If you want to learn this riff, download the video and use video software (Moviemaker is free with MS Windows) and slow down the video or even watch it frame by frame.
thebeatles1595: I play through a Vox AD15VT set to Vox AC30TB with max treble, min mid and min bass. No effects. I record the amp with a Tascam DR-07 digital recorder placed close to the amp speaker. When I mix the guitar with the original recording I apply a bit of compression.
lifeemusicelife: Yes, they were musically gifted. Don't underestimate the contributions of classically-trained producer George Martin who contributed many key musical licks and bits especially in the early days. With George Martin there would be no Beatles as we know them.
Man I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the last 20 seconds of this -- i could never get that one chord with the tritone in it to sound right - and it finally does, thanks so so much! What overwhelming genius these guys had-- i can never get over it.
@Warshadow4 : To learn chord voicings I watched film/video. To get strums I listened to various recordings - the German stereo version has the clearest guitars.
waaalteeerable: Thank you for your comment. My Spanish is not good but I think you are asking me for tabs. See my comment below that starts out "I appreciate your feedback. My videos..."
Great job!! Every time I watch footage of the "FABS" in concert, they are so amazing. But, I think that George was the one MOST taken for granted. Watching the Sullivan show clips, the Shea Stadium shows, the Japan concerts... George was a craftsman in his performances - manipulating his guitar sound and volume just about line by line while singing the third harmonies. He was quite a solid player/performer. Add the factor of his age as The Fabs are taking the world by a storm... very impressive.
Use one of the many free apps to download the video to your pc. Use a video editing software (eg Windows Movie Maker) to watch the riff played frame by frame. It is very clear in the video, but may be a bit difficult to figure out at normal speed.
I knew it was different and it inspired me to take up guitar but I didn't fully appreciate it until until the early 70's. As time goes by I respect it even more.
This is THE BEST last 4 chord ending I've seen yet. I could always hear that the last 4 chords were not like the rest of the song. Thanks for showing how to play them.
I appreciate your feedback. My videos are really intended for accomplished guitarists who want to polish up there Beatles repertoire and can benefit from "seeing" how a song is played. If the various chords that I am playing are not familiar to you then I would suggest that you visit some of the many free guitar chord sites. I had to learn these songs by listening to recordings and watching live performances.
