@tremontirocks he is a good director(not great) but he was always involved with emotionally underdeveloped women, in order to dominate/control them, please don't try to justify him seducing a child he was expected to raise, you look at him through rose tinted glasses, this kind of moral relativity sickens me
@damazywlodarczyk Most would say he's an inarguably great filmmaker - not just director. He auteured more than a handful of the great American comedies. I'm in no way expressing "moral relativity." I'm actually saying the situation isn't really relative at all. I'm saying is it wise to condemn a relationship that, although it began in a questionable, unorthodox way, blossomed in a decades-long, ongoing marriage? I don't think it is. Most married couples never achieve that.
Exactly. I find it hard to respect the views of someone whose never been clinically depressed. That's someone who's never had the guts (or in all fairness, time) to struggle with the truth.
@frickadele I know that I will die and my existence will cease. I know that everybody I love will die and their existence will cease. It doesn't really bother me, I try to cherish every moment.
And then of course there's Nichols and May. Yeah, being at the Hungry I would have been incredible. (We know it stood for "Hungry Intellectual", right? Of course, it would have had to have been a good night. I've heard rumors of Woody having such a bad set, with the audience not even listening, that he turned around and performed to the wall. As mentioned, I'm not much for Woody's attitude about living, but his comedy is the very best there is. Some things are as good, but nothing better.
The youth who grew up in a post-WW2 generation, residing in a tract house, purchased on the GI Bill, were safe and free of want. This was rather like an "incubation" period for comedy and free-thinking to ferment, to perfection! Shelley Berman, Mort Sahl, Allan Sherman and even Newhart (although he was a bit older) were all a part of that scene. Damn...I can only imagine being in my twenties, sitting in the audience at the Hungry i, around 1962. Lambert, Hendricks and Ross were underrated, too.
I absolutely love most of Woody Allen's movies. He is hands down one of my favorites. That being said, his philosophy of living is nothing but a crap. I don't care if O'Neil (whom I happen to also love as a writer), and Nietzsche, and Freud (whom I have no respect for; his theories on mental health are also crap.) agree with Woody Allen. That doesn't make Woody Allen correct. Life is tough, but get rid of your demand that it should be easier and you won't be nearly as miserable.
I absolutely love most of Woody Allen's movies. He is hands down one of my favorites. Now, that being said, the truth is that his philosophy of living that he puts forth here is nothing but a crock of dog doo. I don't care if O'Neil (whom I happen to also love as a writer), and Nietzsche, and Freud (whom I have no respect for; his theories on mental health are crap.) agree with Woody Allen. That doesn't make Woody Allen correct. (I'm running out of words; I will post another one.)
of course he is right, you cant fell happy looking at life w/ delusion. it's good that feeling of happyness is not the only nice thing in our lifes. there is truth, kindness, sympathy, curiosity, self-respect and respect of others, taking achivements, joy, many different sources of pleasant emotions. and unreasonable happyness is not among best of them. just recall Robert Nozick's thought experiment.
Why overrated? Compared to Freud, or Einstein..yes, he's overrated. Rating implies comparisons. Why compare Woody Allen to anyone. Just listen to him and enjoy his honesty, no matter how scary or real it may be. I do agree with his view on life. I am capable of deluding a bit so I am reasonably comfortable with being alive at this point. Woody Allen exists in a very scary place..most could not survive there.
@Handiman544 GREAT comment! I think just like Mr. Allen (when it comes to the meaning of life that is...) I am no intellectual, just introspective enough to ponder my own existence. On a good day, I feel just slightly content...on a bad day, I think like a nihilist... :0P I can relate to Mr. Allen's perspective, for sure.
@Handiman544 Life is whatever you want it to be. His point of view is ridiculous when he says life is without meaning. We give it meaning !!! We have all the tools to make this an amazing experience but some people choose to bitch and complain.
I just love this man. One of these days I´ve watched Match Point, it´s such a supreme work of art. Thinking about Allen I just feel like if, someday, I make such a big work like he does, whatever my profession will be, i will be satisfied
Fantasy, delusions, lying to the self and others is the only way to be happy. I have difficulty in using any of these psychological tools. That is why I have been for most of my life, after age 13, pretty miserable.
@fullblowngenius Helen's a genius and Dennis is a genius. You know a lot of geniuses. You should meet some stupid people once in a while. You could learn something.
@fullblowngenius Pardon my confusion. I thought you were mentioning that a list of geniuses with E's on the end of their names but it looks like it's your sign off. Heck, I guess it works anyways. Wood-ee, Jim-ee, Len-ee, Bob-ee. ;-)

What a fuckin complete idiot this man is. These fuckups become so self deluded it's amazing. Way to go Woody you are a poster child of the dumbing down of the polluted liberal mind
@jacincolo41 Ironic that you refer to one of the most intelligent, articulate and well read men in Hollywood as a deluded idiot. His views are held by the majority of the greatest thinkers in human history from Hemingway to Shakespeare and Freud to Schopenhauer. He's actually apolitical and indifferent to political affiliations. As a side note, his son finished an undergrad degree by the time he was 15 and tested 165+ on a standardized IQ test, the antithesis to being"dumbed down"..
@ritter89 I love Woody Allen and I think his opinions are informed and valid, but it's important not conflate facts with values. Just because Woody Allen happens to share a particularly dark perspective with historical luminaries does not mean his disposition is truth. He thinks life is bleak, and of course he can point to plenty of evidence to support that conclusion, but we're not talking math here.
Er, Schopenhauer was against women rights and he thought women should be slaves and that polygamy should be legal otherwise some women don't get to marry and have nobody to serve.
@ritter89 It's obvious you have never read anything by Schopenhauer. Woody Allen is a quasi-thinker, a quack philosopher -- in fact he doesn't even hold himself to be one. He is semi-intellectual and his view on life are kitschy at best. Read some true CONTINENTAL philosophy. He is just a powerful, rich man, who is making a lot of money out of the little wit that he has. And shagging his step-daughters. Regards.
I can't get past the fact that woody Allen married his adopted daughter. This is a sick, broken person who makes movies.
