At 2:23, it sounds like a large percentage of the audience is laughing at a clearly sober, non-humorous comment. The rhythms of Letterman's speech are so ingrained in the auditory-limbic-cortical neural pathways of his audience members, that the antecedents to the laughter response override the semantic analysis of Dave's speech. You, watching this clip, have different expectations than the audience. The audience members laughing inappropriately aren't stupid...they're programmed.
@foilseal Then, to a degree, they are stupid, unless, of course, it's the same audience sat there day after day, year after year. However, I'm presuming the majority of the audience is there for the first time, so where exactly were they programmed? Over the idiot box? You know there's a cure for that, it involves something called a switch.
@cantfindanamedamnit You are not giving the audience enough credit man. The audience are sensitive, intelligent and intuitive and can totally see what Dave is doing, and find it funny.
@BrewToob I can see your point, watching Dave believe this is a kind gesture is a bit hard to swallow, but there are so many ways you can look at it. How about seeing it as a huge act of generosity on Mary's part who took pity on a pathetic sod like Dave? Its not grave spitting, in fact I think Mary is keeping Bills wonderful spirit alive with this generous act. I dont think Mary got much out of it herself (other than helping Dave) but that is OK.
@thegapputt01 Mrs. Hicks was definitely gracious to oblige, and I'm sure she would be keeping Bill's spirit alive quite honorably, whether she appeared on the show or not...I guess what I was addressing was Dave's hollow gesture here under the circumstances mentioned. (If you saw "Totally Bill Hicks" - a posthumous tribute - then you'd see how callously glib Dave was..nothing short of insulting)
It seems like exactly the type of contrived display Bill would rail against...thus the metaphor.
@BrewToob For what its worth Bill Hicks loved Dave. There's an interview Bill does with Howard Stern in which he talks about how much he loves the show and Dave despite what had happened. Bill got more angry at Dave soon after the Stern interview when he heard that Dave is nervous about jokes about Jesus, but there has always been mutual admiration there. Dave makes it clear here that he fucked up but on reflection he just wanted to do what he could to address it, which isn't much.
Good move on letterman but he should of been real and said the reason I didn't let him on is because I was threatened by him not cause of censorship.davids not even funnier than bills mom
oh wow... Dave and his team of corporate cock suckers attempting to save their reputation by asking Bill Hick's mom to come on the show because Bill has grown quiet the reputation... hmmmm......
@spruceshark If he had done this after that movie came out I'd agree with you, but because it was before that film was made/came out I give him credit for the gesture, and it feels genuine. However it seems like no one in that audience knows who Bill Hicks is so on the popularity part, a lot of people still don't know who Bill Hicks is and think that Denis Leary is a complete original lol.
@ShadowNeverDies what movie is this? sorry musta missed something but ya he does seen genuine your right. Bill Hicks is one of those guys that will grow in popularity I think too just because of how profound he was. But who knows our world is so fast paced at times to stop and think about great people like Bill or ideas he spoke about or from anyone of his nature. Denis Leary... lawl
@spruceshark nonsense. they corrected their mistake. letterman would continue to sell whatever he sells regardless of this. i believe there was a genuine attempt to correct their mistake.
how could you dislike this video odd. I love Bill and i love Mary and i speak to Steve his brother and steves son ryan who are all amazing people who love talking about Bill and his life. I respect Letterman for playing the whole version even though he should of had the power to say no and over turn the producers.Hicks lives on and am glad whover forgot about Bill got to see this interview on prime time tv and remembered how good he was. Bills Body is gone but his Spirit and wisdom lives on..
There no single act letterman could have done as a tv show host that would have given me more respect for him than this. Good job! Shameful that it took you 15 years though.
From Bill's bio: Bill was an unabashed optimist. He believed that most people were good at heart but evil forces were deliberately distracting us all from creating a better world using television, lies, tobacco and alcohol as opiates. Bill felt a revolution of thought was coming and that it was his duty, as an emissary of the truth, to bring whatever light he could to anyone who would listen.
she's a little fire cracker! i love her. ..and sadly, that is the irony of eric's status as one of the worlds greatests guitarists. he just had a new album released last month everyone!
@mgdth502 hey haha i feel like yelling just like sam kinison (and occasionally bill hicks lol) would and say LEWIS BLACK ISN'T DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so thankful to discovering Hicks, Carlin, and all the new people in their footsteps (RIP Greg Giraldo) and their comedy which has given me a new look, and better fresh view of everything and without them our world wouldn't have been as enriched with the brilliance it is, and thanks to Dave for this moment
Mary Hicks is such a classy lady. Bill Hicks and George Carlin are my heroes. They knew the truth of this sad world of ours and how it worked and tried to make people think for themselves, unfortunately that is only 1 % of the human race, and that is being an optimist.
I wish I could have met Bill. Bill, George Carlin, Sam Kinison, and Lewis Black are my favorite comedians and the only ones I love to listen to at any time. Some other guys just tell jokes, these guys are different, I like listening to them talk. I'm 19, and I felt like the way those guys describe life long before I ever heard of them and it's cool for me to have found them; to have some kind of support, knowing other people think of feel the way I do too, if that makes sense.
@mgdth502 you are 19 and you are an ignorant idiot. the best thing you can do is to educated yourself about every piece if information you can get mind on. knowledge IS power, educate yourself and become a respected elder. thats my two cents. i'm going to go kill myself now.
@iamzid I'm very open minded and observant of the world around me. I pay very close attention to things around me, especially things I hear and things I see or read. Having an opinion and view of life based off plain and simple common sense or realistic logic that the majority of the world fails to demonstrate does not make me an idiot. I am always building onto my education, I am also comfortable, happy, and confident with who I am; I don't believe that makes me ignorant.
@mgdth502 if you like jerks like lewis black, then you dont understand the bill hicks thing, you are just another donk that jumps on the bandwaggon. Lewis Black is the most boring fuck ever.
@jimruthless Got me there. I live to be on the "Bill Hicks Bandwagon" and truly hope everybody accepts me as a follower of his word. Fuck yourself. I couldn't give a shit what you think.. Who are you? A nobody commenting some stupid bullshit over the internet. I say I admire Hicks and you say I'm jumping on a bandwagon because I like another comedian. I think Lewis Black is funny and I enjoy listening to him. Hicks and Carlin are eons better to me and I like them for reasons beyond comedy.
Yep I felt the same way that's when i started getting into Calin and Hicks when I was 16 to 18 so glad I did it changed my perspective on the world as I see it, maybe not for the better, but for truth
@mgdth502 I completely agree, I'm 29, but I did not discover Bills genious untill well after he passed away. If there is an afterlife (what ever it is), I want to meet Hicks and Carlin there.
Paul did not know about Eric Johnson !!! Another LIVE example of missing out on great artists...in a way its the same mistake the show made 15 years ago...but we are all just human...I still love you Dave...I watched you throw TVs off your roof when I was 7 years old.
it was akward when bill´s mother told letterman "i had a lot of reasons not to come"..but i love those little moments..painful worth living moments that only happens when two beings comunicate with the truth..
Paul Schaffer knew who Eric Johnson was; this was obviously filmed after 1993, and he was very well known in the music industry by that point. I saw Eric Johnson open for Rush in 1991 when I was a junior in High School. Bill Hicks was a true, honest hero and he is always forgotten.
Prophet(entity) sent from the 4th density to make us aware that not everything you see and hear is what it seems, may his generous soul rise to higher planes of life of pure bliss, love, and beauty. One becomes dead when he or she is forgotten, however he will always live on throughout his brilliant material.
If there is such a thing as re-incarnation then I am sure that Bill was Ghandi, re-incarnated for western civilisation. Same ethos, different outpouring of beliefs.
well said mrs hicks your son would be proud of you .censorship still goes on in the us and uk even the bbc ,and what do we do. nothing just shut up and watch simon coweii
Hmmm I wonder where the great Mr Hicks got his sense of humour from ?? :) Oh right, the Great Mrs Hicks, his Mam!!!! The man was a total genius that TRIED to shake us all out of the dream state that we have been put in. Altho, having heard Bill's take on it, its clearly a nightmare in which we live. RIP Mr Hicks, RIP!!!!
A big thanks to Bill for speaking his truth and the truth about the world, and giving us something sweet to wash that truth down with comedic genius. "What we do for the ourselves dies with us, what we do for others and the world remains and is immortal" ~ Albert Pine. Bill Hicks is immortal in the minds of many :-)
u can tell the mother is still pissed off with Letterman who virtually killed Hicks since cancer is caused by anger repressed & that was mainly fuelled by Letterman's stupid & shallow & superficial response just greedily thinking of his sponsors. Bill Hicks on a bad days performance was far more insightful than anything Letterman comes up with on his best days. I doubt you'd ever inquire about Roswell UFOs, re editings of the bible, suppressed aids cures, Nicola Tesla's free energy reincarnation
@vladekm that doesn't alter the fact that what Letterman did was exacerbate the problem emotionally which effects us wholistically how an you be so naive? Is your name Dave?
God Bless Bill Hicks wherever he is..........go back and listen to what he was trying to tell us about Religion and politics and the whole damn con trick
The audiences at these late night shows are prodded into laughing at every fucking thing someone says, so it sounds good on television. Sadly, most of the intellectually inferior members of the audience don't know who Bill is.
@peaceandmetal88 I agree. I think what people like Hicks, Kinison, Bill Maher, Chris Rock, Lewis Black, and Carlin tried to do was get people to see that THEY are thinking and looking at the world through their eyes and perhaps we the audiance should do the same. I am glad Dave finally made an apology and didn't take this to his grave. When he does get serious I can tell, unlike his audiance at times. I would have loved to have seen Bill Maher and Bill Hicks on tour together. The Bill Tour.
Many moms in the southern states don't have the first clue about their kid's proclivities and abilities. Especially with the religious stuff he grew up with. Glad he at least got out and did his own thing. Not easy doing that. Takes balls and courage.
what bullshit! first.. 15 years later is too little too late. 2nd, the questions that douchebag asks are soooo irrelevant and absolutely wastefull (did he perform for the family?... ) who gives that much of a shit ask something like "what were bills views on shows like these?" also the apology was shit,, it was a lie. that was not why he took it out "false judgement," yea dude if took him 15 years to figure that one out
for those of you fortunate enough to see the film "American: Bill Hicks Story," if Bill's brother is in attendance, ask him about his mother's appearance on Letterman's show ( I had a chance to speak to him after the screening here up North). Those who are lavishly praising Letterman for this 'kind' gesture, think again.
lulz hahahaha even Mary Hicks owns Letterman on this with her question "What else do you want to know?" If Bill is looking at this, he got his payback from beyond the grave
why does this audince seem so sycophantic? i would be so enthralled almost in tears litening to his mam. like it when she gives it to this sell out shill. sad for bill that he was finally appreciated on our shores!!!

Paul Schaffer knew who Eric Johnson was; this was obviously filmed after 1993, and he was very well known in the music industry by that point. I saw Eric Johnson open for Rush in 1991 when I was a junior in High School. Bill Hicks was a true, honest hero and he is always forgotten.

david letterman is a piece of shit. plain and simple. a fucking corporate puppet.
on a side note: bill hick's mother is all class. she's obviously a wonderful woman and showed true courage coming on the show.

McInalda 1 year ago
@McInalda Except he didn't hate the blacks. Hated them with a passion, Ghandi did. This is not a joke btw.

Letterman uses everything and everybody just for his own benefit. He always kisses female guests but didn't do it this time.
He even doesn't care to remember her name. His apology is disingenuous and he really doesn't care about what he did or Bill Hicks or his mother.
The man is a professional showman and exploits every one and every situation to benefit himself.
It's so sad that influential people in media are almost all like this.
danjorgen 1 year ago
@danjorgen Bullshit. Look at the footage of Letterman being interviewed on 'Just a ride' he nearly broke down. He loved and respected Bill.
Nautilus1972 1 year ago
u can tell the mother is still pissed off with Letterman who virtually killed Hicks since cancer is caused by anger repressed & that was mainly fuelled by Letterman's stupid & shallow & superficial response just greedily thinking of his sponsors. Bill Hicks on a bad days performance was far more insightful than anything Letterman comes up with on his best days. I doubt you'd ever inquire about Roswell UFOs, re editings of the bible, suppressed aids cures, Nicola Tesla's free energy reincarnation
midguardz 1 year ago
@midguardz don't be ridiculous. BH was diagnosed with cancer more than half a year before that show.
vladekm 1 year ago
@vladekm that doesn't alter the fact that what Letterman did was exacerbate the problem emotionally which effects us wholistically how an you be so naive? Is your name Dave?

The audiences at these late night shows are prodded into laughing at every fucking thing someone says, so it sounds good on television. Sadly, most of the intellectually inferior members of the audience don't know who Bill is.
peaceandmetal88 1 year ago

I love how people take this as an opportunity to trash Letterman. Really? Are you not seeing the point to this interview.
I doubt many of you are. Letterman is owning it. He's admitting that he fucked up. What's terrible about that. I think more people should do it.
And it's possible that some of the people who don't like Letterman don't get the subtlety beneath the surface.
Having said that, this is YouHate. And I think shredding people make many feel good about themselves.
So shred away.

@RunyonFan
for those of you fortunate enough to see the film "American: Bill Hicks Story," if Bill's brother is in attendance, ask him about his mother's appearance on Letterman's show ( I had a chance to speak to him after the screening here up North). Those who are lavishly praising Letterman for this 'kind' gesture, think again.
