This is precisely why those scientists and philosophers who subscribe to scientism (which is similar to logical positivism) quite often argue that this question has no meaning. Bertrand Russell, for instance. But if we can ask the question of why some x rather than no x, then why not of everything as opposed to nothing?

I agree with most of what Melanie Phillips has to say, but I think she is dead wrong on the Atheist issue. True scientists are not afraid of saying "I don't know" in regards to questions yet unanswered by modern science, and so are not worried that "the divine foot in the door". The fact that some matter has yet to be explained, doesn't make the "old man in the sky" theory any more attractive.

However, she is 100% accurate about the irrationality of the anti-Israeli current trend.
