Middle part is an external clipping diode - so you can change the symmetry, clip point or diode type -- silicon, germanium, LED, two&one for asymmetrical clipping... Instead of guessing which ones you'll like, you can just plug in the jack. Also - if its in your pedalboard and you need to switch OD types to go with a difent gig, its a simple matter of changing the plug.
