@woobiwoodpecker1 from his injuries he suffered when another barn owl entered the box and attack three owlets....it was not the parents who attack their own off spring, apparently it was another owl living in the same area. Was very sad indeed.
It kind of seemed like he was having some neurological issues in the video. His movements were a bit stalled and he had a very hard time keeping his balance.
Hello everybody..i have looked all little films with Hugo..and it was very intresting to see a littl bit of the life of an barn owl.I hope it will go on with your barn owls..i have tears in eyes while seeing the last Minutes here.Owls are wounderfull birds.I often ask myselfe What do they understand of our languages?They live in ur neigborehood whil hearuing us all time.I think teh understand us better than we know.Look in the dark eeyes of an Owl-what do we know shes thinking??
I uploaded a new video to my photobucket site....in my last and final video of HUGO you can really see how sickly he was and that his health deteriorated significantly in a short period of time. This was video from before and after his last meal yesterday. Feel free to watch and post your comments here if you would like. I find them all very insightful.
This video was difficult to watch but excellent quality gave insight into Hugo's status before death. I am not a vet ... only a NP but this owlet appeared to be neulogically compromised probably from disease of infection. I have re-written the Director and offered my opinion that the only way that I feel they will regain any portion of public trust is to retrieve those 3 dead owlets, perform necropsies, report the findings on the web and clean up that disease ridden nest. ? media coverage? a + ?
Very good comment and great observations...I agree with everything you said and they can also analyze the nesting materials....this nest has failed before because of contamination. One thing that they said on the web site is that you can not go to the nest after the owlettes hatch..I have seen a biologist take eaglets out to band as well as foster eaglets back into a nest. The parents do not seem to have a problem.
Owls have evolved where they can tolerate whatever waste materials are within the nest , and can withstand many diseases and infections. In this video the owlet still has a chance ( assuming someone wold have stepped in, God forbid ). In another video it does appear neorologically compromised as you said. This could be as a result of it's injuries, but more than likely it starved to death.
RIP little Hugo. He died this morning around 5 a.m. EST. I saw him die. It was so so sad. I do not know if I can watch any wildlife cams for a while it was pretty traumatic. I know stuff goes on all the time, but.......
It is a VERY sad day for all cam watchers...Hugo was a fighter and a strong will to live even after he was hurt so badly...again I think this whole clutch may have been ill as well...Tiny died of starvation I believe and the others from injuries and possible illnesses. I wonder if we will ever find out.
There seems to be a lot of frustration on my forum as to whether or not they were attacked and by whom...I did not witness the "attack" so if you know something please share...I wonder myself if they are not well too. It seems obvious to me that middle and the big one I named Hugo were beaten but now he seems sickly.

I was sobbing when I watched the attack video and then the following video of the poor owlet's face.... gosh this was so heartbreaking...

This is a very good video as we can get a better look at his little face. He seems lethargic and off-balance, but he has an appetite. Five stars!
