There's a huge scandi culture over here (England) right now, arguably due to the Ray Mears knife. I don't get it myself and I'll take my Esee 4 over a scandi grind any day for a multitude of reasons. ATB
Great knife but i HATE the choil at all (on a small knife). In winter append that you have cold and wet hands and choil SUKS; i cutted my fingers a couple of time, i cutted my gloves... I like 100kkk time a full handle shape like F1 or Bravo series... Just a personal preerence. I have ESE4 "1095", great knife but i skip to use it
This is a great review, thanks. I just got an ESEE-5 and was so impressed with it that I started looking at it's smaller siblings. I ordered a ESEE-3 and will use it for everyday carry. It also will come in super handy when camping for the whittling and shaving type chores. Thanks for the review, it was excellent.
@SBPStudio Definitely not even close. For carving? Mora 120, hands down. For general camp work, I would prefer a Mora or Marttiini over this any day of the week.
@FlamingFury5 Nah, micarta is basically impervious. THe blade will go before the handle even has a dent. You could use it as a socket for a bow drill and you would barely notice anything more than a black mark.
Which of the RAT ESEE series would be the best for this situation? - fight a zombie and stab it in the head, make a fire to burn the zombie, make traps to hunt animals and cook them, then knife fight with some other survivor who tries to steal my food, win and steal his car, then car fails and goes off into a lake, then smash the window with the knife, and cut the seat belt and swim to the surface and then stab more zombies and shave with knife to look good for the ladies to reproduce planet.
I got one of these for Christmas '09 and immediately split my thumb in half trying to pull it out of the sheath. Christmas in the ER wasn't fun, but I do love this knife. It took another month or two before I worked up the courage to break the sheath in a little bit. Now the retention is just right.
@ROMACAPUTMUNDI1927 To be honest, I never heard of it until you posted this comment. I looked it up...looks to be a good tactical knife, but I think the RC3 would be better for camp work. Primarily, it looks uncomfortable for some of the "bushcraft" methods of holding a knife. Just my two cents!
@kinskibrain I don't think you would be disappointed with either of the knives. I realllly like fallkniven, but RAT has a better warranty. tough call!
@BushcraftKnifeReview Yes the ESEE (trying to use their new name) warranty is really good. The ESEE 3 (RC-3) is thinner than the F1 and that together with its grind makes me think that it might be better things you'd use a smaller blade for. Fallknivens stronger construction (lamination, convex edge) is probably more suitable for a larger, tougher knife like the A1. You seem to have done the maths there too mate with your A1 and RC-3! :)
@TheSouthernsurvivor My RC-3 had the sharpest factory edge I've ever had on a knife. Shaving the arm clean in one smooth draw. 1095 is very easy to sharpen and has pretty good edge retention. I'd go for it.
You were right. I ordered one with the black coating on it. Man this is one sharp knife. Just the right size. I love it. Thanks for your review, thanks for your help.
just picked one of these up....at a second look on the handle scales(bead blasted linen micarta) do you think the RC-3MIL version with the canvas micarta is better? the linen seems to hold moisture little too much.
@jaredbotha, stop swinging your dick over internet kid. get your head out in the sun and stop showing how a big fuckin pussy you by writing dumb shit around here. good review btw Bill :) keep them coming
Haha. Glad someone appreciates my sense of humor. I actually got the RC-5 in the mail today. THAT is a zombie knife. Holy cow it is a beast. I am kind of afraid to look at it...it's out on the back deck right now under a pile of boxes for safety.
lol, so when is a review and some field testing on that bastard ready? I saw some short reviews about it, but not even a single test to show how it actually performs outdoor. that would be very helpful :)

Has any on removed the ESEE Handle scales?
I went to remove mine and they were not coming off,
i put a lot of pressure trying to unscrew them and they diddnt budge so i decide i would stop and not risk striping the screws.
do they maby have locktite on them?
Thanks, JBK

would you suggest serrated or standard edge
TDONLEY91 1 year ago
@TDONLEY91 For bushcraft, plain edge. For "survival", the powers at be suggest serrated

It's a full flat grind. A saber grind is with the upper part flat with no bevel then convexed or flat beveled to the edge. Good reviews.
