  • This isn't the original. This is from 1969. The Walker Brothers also did a brilliant version in 1966 I think. But the first version I know is by the Guess Who, believe it or not, when they were still Chad Allen and the Expressions, in 1965.

  • Thanks so much for this, never heard the original version before....now I gotta find this 45.

  • wonderful :) ktf

  • oh my! this is an absolutely amazing song. I love this original version, right alongside the Carpenters cover. What a joy! Thanks so much for the posting. :D

  • It was Richard Carpenter who spotted this record and recognized its potential for the Carpenters. He was great at finding songs in the strangest places, movie soundtracks, obscure album cuts, music he was just hearing casually. The original Ruby recording was excellent but never heard much. The genius knew exactly what to do with it.

  • Two great singers sharing the same song. Wow! Love both versions. Thnx for sharing this one.

  • Hm, they even shared a record label, apparently.

  • i never knew this was a cover,and what a cover........love it 5 stars

  • I love the Carpenters version but this is awesome too. Wonderful arrangement and great vocals.

  • The Carpenters also covered another of Ruby & The Romantics' songs, "Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore".

  • Not to take away from the great Ruby & Romantics performance but the writers of the song Udell and Geld wrote so many hit records starting way back around 1961 with the early Brian Hyland hits "Let Me Belong To You" and "Ginny Come Lately".

  • This is new to me, and I love it! Thanks for sharing it.

  • Brilliant record. I bought this many, many years ago and it reminds me of being young and carefree! My record has another fantastic song on the other side "Baby I Could Be So Good At Loving You" - any chance that could be posted here on You Tube? I'd love to hear it.

  • I know this is the original, but nothing compares to Karen Carpenters velvet voice and Richard on the piano.

  • I had never known about this Ruby and the Romantics version.

  • @gayboylaca Same here, got informed in the comments of a Karen Carpenter video...

  • Me either! I didn't know they were ever on A&M. Interesting!

  • Stunning

  • Wow, fascinating! This really shows that Richard Carpenter digs deep to find songs to record, like "Close To You" and "Superstar". And he took the chorus instead of the verses to build the Caprpenters arrangement.

  • Wait a minute... Is this a song Carpenters made a cover of it?

  • Yes, Karen & Richard covered this version of Hurting Each Other. Ruby & the Romantics cut this in 1969 & Richard admitted in an interview that he was prompted to cut this song after Ruby's version (both acts were on A&M Records at the same time).

  • @MusicManKevin The original is by Ruth Lewis...from 1966 on RCA Victor.

  • Thanks for the 411...

  • fantastic fantastic.............wow!!!

  • Hang on a second! How about 1965 from Jimmy Clanton? He even performed it on Shindig! I love hearing all these versions. It's clear that Richard must have heard all the versions, because there are bits and pieces from each of them in the Carpenters' arrangement. And Canadian group Chad Allan and the Expressions (later known as the Guess Who) also recorded it in 1965. It was also covered by the Walker Brothers in 1966. All these recordings are right here on YouTube!
