Well they both have infinites in their attacks and projectiles. Mario has an unblockable ex uppercut and Sonic can send out three giant tornados at the same time seeing as the super is only a lvl 1. But people have made balance patches for these two. Barrysun has a private edit of this Sonic where the giant tornado is a lvl 2 super and the CLSNs and infinites are cleaned up. BBH made a patch for Mario where his infinites are cleared and his ex uppercut is blockable.

Sonic destroys robots, terminator versions of itself, giant droids with guns and two deathstars or eggstars if you prefer, and when he has seven chaos emmeralds turns itself into somekind of supersayan. Mario fights turtles, giant mushrooms, killer vegetables, and his most powerfull attack is just small fireballs. Sonic´s worst enemy tryes to conquer the universe and Mario´s worst enemy just wants to take his castle and princess within, LOL.

And sonic 3 for megadrive has a saving game feature that let you save the emmerald collection and essembled with sonic & knuckles lets you taking superemmeralds that make him hipersonic, normal sonic destroys death stars, so, a metallic mario should be a piece of cake for it, specially with the magnetic shield.
