  • nice video!

note: the opening on these traps are slightly over the legal size . I modified my trap to make the entrances smaller to prevent catching otters. hope this helps

  • As far as i can see the only reason why this net is illegal for UK purposes is that the entrance to the trap is larger than the EA allow (i.e. >9.5cm across). If you placed an otter guard over this to reduce the size of the entrance, I don't see why you would not be able to use this legally? Or am I missing something here?

  • why is this illegal in UK???

  • Nice lil traps those !

  • considering law, legal is not the same thing as lawful, illegal is NOT unlawful....legal statues, acts of parliament and legislation are NOT law (although the common belief is that they are) they are rules of law, which only carry the force of law by consent of the governed....if you do not consent, they do not carry the force of law

see john harris-its an illusion ;)

  • these traps are useless in places with snapping turtles.dont even bother!and WHERE is crayfishing illegal??WHAT?thats crazy!!!thats a natural rescource free for all,to feed the pepole with when shit hits the fan.why would it be iileagal??

  • you also have to put somewhere safe so no somali pirates can find it.

  • To use this design of trap in England for invasive crays would still be illegal even if you had all the relevant consent from the environment agency and land owners permission. Traps need to be a certain spec and the one reviewed here is also very effective at catching otters and water voles. See environment agency web site to see this design of trap full with otter and babies.

If we are talking survival forget the pots and learn about using a net as it is so much more effective at catchin

  • @brigstowe2003 Thanks for the notice, I have taken your advice seriously and looked it up on the Environment Agency website and it's right. For now I have put up a notice throughout this video whilst I consider my options (I might remove the video entirely) All the best,

    Ashley Cawley.

  • Found one of these in a lake nearby, In sweden Crayfishing is illegal, and trust me that was a not a survivalsituation, Civilization was just around the corner, a 100 meters away.. so I dissabled is, released the crayfish into the lake.

  • Does that trap work for you?

  • I recomend the large version of the trap. But this trap is good for anything; i have caught fish, crawfish, a 40 in long crayfish snake, and a good sized snapping turtle. I have yet to use my trap in saltwater but it should easily hold big blue crabs. The one and only thing i dont like about it is that the mesh isnt that strong and had a medium sized crawfish climb out of a hole he made shortly after I took the trap out of the water. The best bait to use is a dead fish or catfish stink bait.

  • kewl

  • I bet the FORIEGNERS LOVE THEM

  • have to get permission to use the trap???OMG THATS HORRIBLE, like being in prison. I use to catch crayfish when I was a child and didnt even have my mama's permission! Do you have to pay to register?

  • Depends where you are, but there regulated just like fish, and up here nobody really cares about those things, you need a license but then just follow the regs from there (that would mean places that don't allow bait fishing your hooped, or just don't let nobody see you which is pretty easy) but they'll have size of trap limits, how many you can catch a day, how many traps all that bullshit, and I agree on how we use to catch em as kids without even mamas permission:P

  • And honestly, don't buy any shell fish traps period (accept this product seems sweet cause the folding, but thats still easily made!) just make your own, much cheaper and they can end up much much! better, chicken fencing, wire cutters, zap straps or zip ties, rope, a milk jug, bait, and you're set:)

  • how does it work for eels, wouldn't they be able to just swim out

  • The entrances on either end of the trap has fine netting that is relatively loose making it easy to push and go it, but it would close behind them making it a bit trickier to get out. Of course it all depends on the size of your fish/eel as small ones could get through the holes, but that's a good measure as you don't want them anyway.

  • The majority of funnel style traps it is quite normal to have a bit of two way traffic in and out of the pot through the night. Some do get out, so to ensure maximum productivity the traps need to be pulled every couple of hours. Once a day is fine but you won’t land as much. Unfortunately to use the trap reviewed here even with all the relevant paperwork from the EA and the land owner would still be illegal.

  • How much is one of these traps. I like that it folds up. There aren't always 2 liter bottles around.

  • seen one online for like 6 pounds or 8 bucks

  • in norway they cost 2 bucks

  • @SurvivalWithBushcraf wonder how you'd make one or something similar for a SHTF scenario, what materials are used to make one?

  • Im in one right now!..that's why I wrote.

To stay healthy, a person needs a reasonable standard of food - I make sure I get that by gathering whatever free food is out there, and if that means 'poaching' sometimes, then so be it!"

People generally, are too frightened by the 'law'

the ONLY law I recognise and respect is natural law

  • I think you need to revaluate the definition of survival my friend. If your in a position to be browsing the web & leave YouTube comments I hardly think your in a true survival situation.

  • to hell with 'legal'!...................Bushcraft = survival.

In MY books survival takes precedence over any 'legal'!

Good series from you nonetheless....like the vids

  • 1. No, Bushcraft does not simply = Survival.

    2. Yes, a TRUE survival situation does take precedence over any laws, but have you ever been in a REAL survival situation yet?

  • Are you serious? You need legal permission/a license to trap a few crayfish for personal consumption/bait?????

  • Unfortunatly yes, im with you; personally I think its mad but thats the way the world has gone.

You'll need to get permission from landowners and then no doubt need to seek out a liscence.

  • A license is required in the UK due to the signal crayfish, it's an American species that has been let into the British river system and it carries a disease which has almost wiped out the native white crayfish.

It is in fact perfectly legal to stand in a river holding a crayfish you've just picked up, but as soon as you step on the bank with in it your hand, you've broken the law.

It may seem strange at first, but when you find out why the law exists, you begin to understand.

  • in flroida you do not need a licenes to sell them for bait, or for u to eat them, and most states you don't need a licenes because they are considerd nusians animals

  • how are they a nuissance?? they taste amazing with some old bay!!!

  • @FrankAndDaveOutdoors shhhhh...let them be a nusissance otherwise we may have to register to catch crayfish, who knows a british white crayfish that carries disease might get into our riversystems

  • Thats a cool song at the end of the video.

  • does anyone know where to get the license in uk

  • what could substitue crawfish trap? ex.prawn trap, minnow trap,

  • i use minnow traps here in missouri it works perfectley and i also use sausage

  • not by law in south australia we can have lots of them in the water cool hay.

  • zack brown catching crawfish . how cool is

    that..lol

  • That's a pretty wide entrance, is it otter proof?

  • Thats a very good question and I did wonder it myself, although I don't know the legal spec for it to not trap Otters. Having said that I know this item is now commercially avaliable in a lot more place, they're popping up everywhere so I assume they are of legal specification.

  • then again, just cuz stuff is popping up everywhere doesn't mean it's legal, drugs for example

  • True, but then your forgetting that these are legally registered businesses selling products in a legal maner to the public.

  • i do it old school styler, i catch cray fish with a hook, i just put corn on and leave it in the water and it ussually pinches on and holds on while i slowly broig it up and net it

  • what is a good bait for catching crayfish?

  • fish...

  • How do I get ahold of one of these...is there a website where I can order one?

  • Cabelos online fishing site carries them .

I had one and they do work but a snapper tore it up to get the fish inside thus went back to metal types

  • how do i find permission for trap setting?

    it looks like quite worthwile

  • i have one :0)

  • Nice one Ash, have you caught anything with it yet? :)

  • Not yet to be honest, the reasons being; so far I only have permission to use this on one piece of land which has a small river & lake, I put 1 Trap in each but as it was a visit we could only leave them in place for 8 hours, also the river was too small really. I've also heard the Crayfish population down here in Cornwall is very low. But I was up for catching eel or anything! :)

  • That's a shame. Keep persevering, you'll get something, probably in spring.

We are getting a lot of the signal crayfish here in Ludlow and the water agency is fuming!
