Tim, well said, i agree with you completely, i always thought that the Nutrition solution to depression was total bs and utter nonsense.
There are some guys on here who claim that the cure for all depression or sadness is just stuffing as bananas in your mouth as possible, and if it doesnt work just eat more all day long, 100 bananas a day if needed .
Tim, you are awake, aware and are experiencing Truth right now
I could not agree more with everything you said in this video. The awareness is terrifying. Thus the reason people dull their senses w/food, drink and things. Distractions so the real issues do not have to be faced. Lack of like minded people is very lonely. Onward and upward one day at a time.
Tim. You have wonderful ideas and are a strong and healthy guy. Maybe the pressure you feel is avoiding having an independent life, a home of your own and a love in your life. Most people, especially guys don't feel good about themselves staying in their parents home after their early 20s. You're in a constant fight or flight syndrome instead of finding a place of peace. A place of your own. You create your own community. Get out of mom and dads place and create a place of your own. It works.
Tim, I'm probably not the first person to say this, and it seems like you're realizing it on your own, but you need to get out of the north east completely!
You're lucky enough to be an American, where you can live in sunny places like SoCal and Hawaii. Do it! If I had access to such places with great weather and sunshine I certainly wouldn't live anywhere else. :)
It is ONLY THE DIETARY DIFFERENCES we're talking about here, nothing else has changed all that much. Yesterday I went out "drinking" with my friends, I was dancing till 2 am, today I went to lunch with my coworkers, I brought water&dates. When we go out to dinner with my family I'm giving this weird salad instructions to the waiter. So what? My friends and family got used to the idea of me being a green-frutty-weirdo, so my social life really doesn't suffer anymore.
you are depressed because of the reality that surrounds you, and which you find yourself in. when it's you versus the context of your life, things can feel impossible. but when you see all the ways that you co-create your reality with others, then power begins to seep back in. it isn't each of us against the world. each of us IS the world.
BTW, that question in North America-how are you, always irritated me, since nobody really wanted to hear the answer. What's the point to ask the bloody question? I agree it is said to see people ruining themselves-physiologically and financially. Regardless how many times I tried to explain how money works, people lough. I guess the NWO will achieve their goal of getting rid of 80% of population. You cannot help to those who are not willing to listen.
Let it go man. You cannot change the whole world. But you are not alone. A year ago I came across a few of your videos, changed my diet, or rather way of eating and never looked back. Even though I am not 100% raw (~70%) and I eat meat (mostly raw like jamon or proscutto) I have not been sick for a year, even tho some of my collegues have been already sick 4-5 times. The infection doesn't stick to me. Just forget about all these little problems. Move to Europe for a year, they socialize more.

The first words that popped into my head when you started making these recent videos was "Vermont" and "Lyme Disease".

Another great video. You make so many good points. My thoughts exactly.I felt alone my whole life. I don't have anyone that I can really connect with, but having a online community really helps to remind me that I'm not the only fruit loving vegan out there:) Soon I'll be moving and I will really make a conscious effort to find people that share a similar lifestyle. Virtual hugs from NY:)
its not a waste of time as far as im concerned dude....i finished my run at 10:40 on saturday night too brother. 12 miles, in an hour and ten minutes, in a spanking new pair of brooks. :)
Yes man look for people like you, I am on the same boat and I work on it everyday. Everyone thinks I am crazy because I am a fruitarian not sure if you eat fruit enough but it does make me feel very good. 80 10 10 did it for me. Good luck and I think your mission will pay off.
man you look great and are a very smart guy. It is ok to be depressed, it is just like the storm, we just have to wait until it passes. feel inside of you and live the moment. I see only a brilliant guy going through a bad winter. I think you need to change the energy by going somewhere else, where you can breath the warm weather like florida or get out of the country. You can do it. I think that town is affecting you.
mr. van orden. you claim to eat less than 3000 calories and say at the same time you re not depressed because of a lack of carbs. why dont you eat 4000 calories for a month and see what happens. would be a nice experiment?
it seems you already know the cause of your depression (You are, or you feel alone), so why don't you do anything to change that? Why are you choosing to be depressed? That doesn't help anybody, does it? You are a wonderful person, changing the world one run at the time :) You are doing a great job. Be happy and the world will be happy with you. It's worth it.
Tim, you're certainly an inspiration to me! I have just started running at age 35 after switching to a raw vegan diet and enjoying my newfound energy. As far as what you say in this vid about depression, I can totally relate to it. My way of coping is to shut myself away at times, take a short break and just chill... basically be totally unproductive for as long as it takes for me to recharge. I find the world at odds with my values and mentally draining. It's my time out that keeps me sane!
Hi Tim, I'm following your videos for a long time and you have been and still are a big source of inspiration for me. Don't even think that what you do is useless or vane. You help people.. how many 1000?10010? Doesn't mater how many, , your work for Running Raw Project, the videos, website and your results are fantastic. Raw foodists grows every day and you are one of the BIGGEST examples for all of them, doing the same you are doing now, improving their lives, making the world a little better!
Tim, I keep visualizing you holding a baby. Maybe you have wanted to start a family and not had that happen yet? You are so complete as a man and would be a beautiful father. I think at some point for everyone as they get older, they feel the loss of not having a family if they don't create one. I would be bonkers without my kids no matter how connected I could feel to society, I would be lonely without them.
The depression creates the feeling of not fitting into ones community because it focuses on the negative. Without depression you may see some similarities and feel like you do fit.
Tim you are not alone. You have thousands of friends all over the world who care about you. These days, I am always checking when my friend Tim would upload a new video and what message he would give us in it.
Dr Morse will tell you 'we are born alone, we live alone, we die alone! Learn to enjoy your own company. It's really none of your busness about all those people eating pizza and drinking alcohol! LOL
You hit the nail on the head and spoke the truth about why people are depressed. 100% correct. It is the community. We are disconnected from each other, the only way we meet is for an unhealthy meal, or aggressive sports games or loud concerts or activities that involve competition. Perhaps brain storm a way to connect the people that don't fit into that social norm - start a NEW way of interacting with others in healthy ways with true caring and authentic connections.
Just a thought, we all make a video - those who are alone - and start building new communities of like minded souls. We can make a change - if everyone reading this message and watching this video decided to start meeting new like minded health conscious non-materialistic, exercise outdoor enthusiasts we would find them in our community and build and grow a NEW COMMUNITY - small groups getting together, unconditional love, and concentrating on what really matters - health, connection & support
Thank you Tim. I started my own Journey the day after you started yours. You inspired me to start running again and start eating healthy again. I too suffer from depression. You are saving my life.
GOOGLE+ is great in that you can pick a topic and see everyone online in multiple videos at once in a chat on a particular topic. Kinda cool. Worth checking out?
The running raw team sounds great Tim, follow your dreams. I hope you find a great assistant to help you. i am sure you'll find your answers, just keep your focus.
One thing I've learned over the years is that as things get worse they get better. It's important to realize that your isolation would have been way different if you lived on a farm 100 years ago with no technology. Many of my former farm relatives were sent off for shock therapy for their supposed depression. Others were sent to war and were killed when they never applied. The point I'm making is you are are the most important person right now and honor it every day!
@johnnyvegan....yea...i wish ppl would wake up...an see what they are doing to themselves...and the world....but...some are in a deep coma...and wont ever wake up.
I totally agree with you Tim. I wish people would just wake up and realize what they doing to their bodies, the environment, and society. I don't really have any friends in my community either. Work and family keep me pretty busy though. If you need some like-minded friends to hang out with, my partner and I live in Central MA.
Tim ....you said it... Move ...change your zipcode . I remember you said you started raw in L.A. Forget the barflies . Fla is in the 60 s and 70 s . If you ask a family member or good friend what s up ?? They tell ya . LOL . The whole STORY. Be well and stay warm , Bob
And I do feel alone at times too, I live on an island with the lowest literacy rates in the country, everyone drinks and so much disease is around from diet... Who are my friends? Not many, only a couple I can hold a conversation with. Yeah it's depressing but I'm not gonna ruin my life over it, I'm just going to just adjust to being alone AND happy, cause I don't like feeling down..
I WANNA BE PART OF YOUR TEAM! email me. i like the way u eat and your active lifestyle. i wanna run and be a raw vegan athlete too. you're inspiring and educating a lot of people. im not even vegan right now that's part of my depression. i think im eating bad because im not good in communication, no social life and not good at anything.
Tim, if your brain was THAT smart, you'd look past the despair and make YOUR life in YOUR body easier, by having a positive attitude and being happy for being happy :) you didn't even consider vitamin D deficiency! Look up how much homo sapians truely need on a daily basis!
@tvo...Im on a medical/heart floor right now...I see ppl with gross infections, bad hearts, kidneys, livers,...almost everyone is diabetic..or sucking up pain, sleep, nausea, or itch meds every 2-3 hrs......tonight 2 of the patients im taking care of have cancer on top of other issues....12 years as a nurse....an it just gets worse...
You're right about the things you talked about. Most, if not all, social situations have to be around food, and most conversations are shallow and most of the time about the same things, like a recorder playing the same questions and answers all the time. You might be right when you say that you should move somewhere where there's more people like you ;) Thank you for sharing Tim! By the way, there's no need to answer everything, look for options to mark the most important emails ;) <3 Peace
SO FREAKN TRUE!!! "HOW ARE YOU?" "GREAT HOW ARE YOU?"... I hate that!!! It is so true!!!!!! And THANK YOU for saying that RAW foods changed your depression... I was confused because it is a topic that I get mixed answers. Thank you for clarifying it... I was giving up on raw food....
@YFabu Yea that HOW ARE YOU question is really annoying, as most ppl just ask it, not really carrying about, they just ask because of manours, but they really dont give a s*** about you. So I would be really happy I ppl dont ask me How are you every time I see them.
you said it on video .. you have no common ground w/ your community .. you need to move .. or atleast spend the winter in warmer area - your "work" is mobile - not sure what else is keeping you in VT .. but your talent can be definitely used in great "raw communities" like NYC, LA, etc ..
Thanks for the awesome vids, Tim. What you need is a hot intern to help you with your emails and communications. Any hot interns out there that want to help Tim out??
@tvo ....im alone too....my brother, sister, and mom died....my dad is 400+miles away in louisiana....is hurts to see him shoot and eat deer...drink Monsters(energy drink)..then....suffer with asthma...ulcers...high blood pressure...an arthritis....there are no ppl around me at work ...any where.... That eat like I do except ytube, everyone at my last job hated me cus I was vegan........so I hide being vegan at work..im at work now..the other nurses are getting Subway....
I'm so glad we're friends TVO, I can relate to a lot of what you say.... exercise being a real "shelter in the storm" of the head-stuff. I did some tabata today.... first day. It does get lonely, we have this synthetic community online, I guess it's better than nothing. We gotta stick together.
It's odd. I don't know you and yet I worry about you. I hope that you're not a prisoner of your lifestyle. You're not killing yourself with pizza, but what is the depression doing to you? Please take care. There has to be a happy medium.
@jaylu0717 "You're not killing yourself with pizza, but what is the depression doing to you?" This is a very valid point, one must learn to compromise in life. Nature will soon let you know that you can't go against the grain entirely for very long. A wise insight. I think Tim would say that they are killing themselves, just more slowly, but I don't think that's entirely true.
@jaylu0717 Tim's struggle looks like the classic struggle of the idealist who lives completely outside of the norm, and who often ends up wrecking himself by going too fast, by refusing to compromise.
(cont.) I've felt the alienation of a lifetime already and I'm only 24 years old. I've gone through all of the existentialist/nihilistic literature because these sad men were the only company I could have and could stand. None of my social issues have been resolved, I'm still an outsider, but my condition has improved tremendously since I've accepted that I have a chemical imbalance and I've started taking the supplements that help correct it.
Oh, Tim... I just came here from watching a wonderful lecture on depression by a brilliant professor at Standford Unversity and then watched this... you are oh-so wrong being so sure that this isn't biological. It is. It's just not as simple as saying that it's only that. Of course there are many psychological aspects. But really, I know how you feel, I have been wasting my youth away because I don't fit in and I have no community and struggle with depression.
I can totally relate to those thoughts on depression, I've had those thoughts since elementary and it's pain in the ass. But still I try to become more aware although it will just make it worse. It's also very hard to ignore or otherwise you will become totally secluded from "real", the artificial world that we created. Still we want to be part of it, or community, and often it's that artificial one. Guess this sort of people should start building communities all over the world, not just online.
All my friends are pretty much gone. People dont like to be around people who are depressed. Not to mention these days all the under 30 types cant even carry on a conversation without dicking around with their stupid cell phones or checking text messages. They would rather text someone when a person is standing right in front of them wanting to chat. Its friggin sad and will only get worse. We all should smash all this shit and go back to 1950 values. Technology sucks!
@runningraw Yes everyone is in such a rush these days. Vancouver BC was bad, I figured Vancouver Island would be quieter but everyone over here seems in a rush as well. I always said you live in a very nice state. I used to ride my motorcycle thru Vt, NH and Maine coming to and from Nova Scotia to Ontario 20 years ago and always enjoyed those pretty peacefull states. Cheers
Well I am more depressed now at 265 lbs than I was 2 years ago at 460 lbs when all I eat was fast food and pizza 3 times a day. I was most likely within a few years of death. My resting pulse was 100 bpm and sometimes I would wake up in the night with my heart pounding so hard I would sit alone in the dark for an hour afraid if I went back to sleep I would die. However now, with 75% of the weight off I now see 40 more years to live with all my mistakes and screw ups and that makes it worse.
@tbayguy I'm not going to give you some useless advice or tell you to keep your chin up. But I will tell you that that there is more than one direction to look at your life. You don't have to look back. You can look forward as well. There is great possibility for you now that was not there before. These are not just words for me, they are a way of life. Watch my "You are what you ATE" video - it might help.
@runningraw Thanks Tim. I appreciate you taking the time to comment to me. I will go find that video and try to focus more on the future and less on the mistakes in my past. No matter how bummed I get I still get in to the gym to do my cardio and weights and stay focused on getting down to 200 lbs. Thank You.
@tbayguy They are only mistakes if you don't learn from them. It's obvious that you have learned a great deal and are on a new path. That new path may not be easy, but it will bring about a new you :)
@runningraw I eat a lot like you do ecept my morning oatmeal with molasses. I watched your video on fibre and you also mentioned you dont add flax seed often to your smoothies. Does that mean that adding chia seeds twice daily to my smoothies is not as good as just adding a teaspoon of hemp oil instead?
Yeah, the depression can get worse because you are starting to actually FEEL the feelings inside instead of stuffing them down and numbing out with loads of food. Depending on how long you have abused food it will probably be a lifelong journey to undo the addiction to abuse food, if it was cocaine or any other drug it wouldn't be so much like that but because food is a requirement for sustaining life, it makes it so much harder imo.
@guestaccount26 Ya I hear ya man. Thanks for the reply. I have abused food for about 20 years . Kinda once I moved off base and had to start cooking for myself which I never did. Lived on pizzas and subs from my mid 20s onward and it just got worse and worse. My nurse friend said the same thing. jamming food down my cakehole to push down all my crappy childhood memories and now that the food is gone its all coming up. Cheers
such great insights and awareness of where you're at - thanks.

Tim, I entirely agree with what you're saying. I'm 57, been doing a lot more raw for about a year and feel the difference in my mind.
There are so many ways to feel alone but feeling understood by like minded people is surely helpful in feeling more connected to others.
My motto is - dont ask me how I am if you dont really want to know because - I will tell you - otherwise its just making useless, meaningless noise.
Stay true to yourself Tim and find the support you need to go forward.

I totally agree with you Tim. I wish people would just wake up and realize what they doing to their bodies, the environment, and society. I don't really have any friends in my community either. Work and family keep me pretty busy though. If you need some like-minded friends to hang out with, my partner and I live in Central MA.

Cocovegan11 2 months ago

YFabu 2 months ago
@YFabu Yea that HOW ARE YOU question is really annoying, as most ppl just ask it, not really carrying about, they just ask because of manours, but they really dont give a s*** about you. So I would be really happy I ppl dont ask me How are you every time I see them.

you said it on video .. you have no common ground w/ your community .. you need to move .. or atleast spend the winter in warmer area - your "work" is mobile - not sure what else is keeping you in VT .. but your talent can be definitely used in great "raw communities" like NYC, LA, etc ..

It's odd. I don't know you and yet I worry about you. I hope that you're not a prisoner of your lifestyle. You're not killing yourself with pizza, but what is the depression doing to you? Please take care. There has to be a happy medium.
jaylu0717 2 months ago
@jaylu0717 "You're not killing yourself with pizza, but what is the depression doing to you?" This is a very valid point, one must learn to compromise in life. Nature will soon let you know that you can't go against the grain entirely for very long. A wise insight. I think Tim would say that they are killing themselves, just more slowly, but I don't think that's entirely true.
tranquil87 2 months ago
@jaylu0717 Tim's struggle looks like the classic struggle of the idealist who lives completely outside of the norm, and who often ends up wrecking himself by going too fast, by refusing to compromise.

(cont.) I've felt the alienation of a lifetime already and I'm only 24 years old. I've gone through all of the existentialist/nihilistic literature because these sad men were the only company I could have and could stand. None of my social issues have been resolved, I'm still an outsider, but my condition has improved tremendously since I've accepted that I have a chemical imbalance and I've started taking the supplements that help correct it.
tranquil87 2 months ago
Oh, Tim... I just came here from watching a wonderful lecture on depression by a brilliant professor at Standford Unversity and then watched this... you are oh-so wrong being so sure that this isn't biological. It is. It's just not as simple as saying that it's only that. Of course there are many psychological aspects. But really, I know how you feel, I have been wasting my youth away because I don't fit in and I have no community and struggle with depression.
tranquil87 2 months ago
On so many levels I am alone too.
silentjealousy77 2 months ago

However now, with 75% of the weight off I now see 40 more years to live with all my mistakes and screw ups and that makes it worse.
tbayguy 2 months ago
@tbayguy I'm not going to give you some useless advice or tell you to keep your chin up. But I will tell you that that there is more than one direction to look at your life. You don't have to look back. You can look forward as well. There is great possibility for you now that was not there before. These are not just words for me, they are a way of life. Watch my "You are what you ATE" video - it might help.
runningraw 2 months ago
@runningraw Thanks Tim. I appreciate you taking the time to comment to me. I will go find that video and try to focus more on the future and less on the mistakes in my past. No matter how bummed I get I still get in to the gym to do my cardio and weights and stay focused on getting down to 200 lbs. Thank You.
tbayguy 2 months ago
@tbayguy They are only mistakes if you don't learn from them. It's obvious that you have learned a great deal and are on a new path. That new path may not be easy, but it will bring about a new you :)
runningraw 2 months ago
@runningraw I eat a lot like you do ecept my morning oatmeal with molasses. I watched your video on fibre and you also mentioned you dont add flax seed often to your smoothies. Does that mean that adding chia seeds twice daily to my smoothies is not as good as just adding a teaspoon of hemp oil instead?
tbayguy 2 months ago
@tbayguy
Yeah, the depression can get worse because you are starting to actually FEEL the feelings inside instead of stuffing them down and numbing out with loads of food. Depending on how long you have abused food it will probably be a lifelong journey to undo the addiction to abuse food, if it was cocaine or any other drug it wouldn't be so much like that but because food is a requirement for sustaining life, it makes it so much harder imo.
guestaccount26 2 months ago
@guestaccount26 Ya I hear ya man. Thanks for the reply. I have abused food for about 20 years . Kinda once I moved off base and had to start cooking for myself which I never did. Lived on pizzas and subs from my mid 20s onward and it just got worse and worse. My nurse friend said the same thing. jamming food down my cakehole to push down all my crappy childhood memories and now that the food is gone its all coming up. Cheers
