There was a comment further down asking why would david be singing this song and not a christmas carol well i can say that this song was written about a person helping another person out and isnt that wat christmas and the salvos is all about
Thanks for that. I got the feeling when he started the song and further on, that he wasn't well. I've watched several more videos this afternoon and loved most, particularly Un'aura amorosa from Cosi fan tutte - beautiful. I have it playing right now.
David was quite ill in the weeks before this performance, so it's true that he was not at his absolute best vocally. Nonetheless, watching David perform at Carols each year brings me and my family immense joy.
I loved this performance - along with all of his. David Hobson is one of Australia's most talented singers and he does a great job of anything and everything he does, over a range of genres as shown by his hugely successful album The Promise and his triumphant performances on It Takes Two.
This clip does however make me wonder why he is singing You Raise Me Up (although it is undoubtedly a great song)instead of a christmas carol at Carols In The Domain?
A close friend, who is a long-time patron of Opera Australia, said to me that it's right our national opera company stopped using him. Let's face it, the voice is getting so bad. Good for him to reinvent himself as a reality-TV contestant.
I'd be interested to know the basis for your friend's remarks. Is this on official advice from Opera Australia or from hhis/her own observations, and if so, how were these made? From TV, YouTube or from live performances, or other?
Since you have probably never heard him sing live, (apart from generally second-rate youtube videos) you're not really in a position to know how he sounds today, unlike the thousands who flock to his concerts and other live performances. Those in the know, guarantee that he is singing better than ever before in his more than 2 decade career.
Let's face it, almost every performance in a show like this leaves something to be desired. One rehearsal, variable accoustics and exposure to the elements is hardly conducive to a studio performance.
This particular number was one of the very few that night that I listened to without wishing it would hurry up and finish.

Please take a look at other singers' live performance of this song, like Josh Groban's, you'd tell the difference in the quality. Anyone with a good ear can hear flaws in David Hobson's singing.
freda - this certainly wasn't the best version I've heard of this song - nor anywhere near up to David's usual standard of singing. I loved this song from the first time I heard Josh Groban sing it - he's probably the best, and Aled Jones has a good version, too.
I don't particularly like the song, but if I had to choose one from the myriad of covers I'd rather hear David sing it, even though it's not really ideal for him.
David Hobson has a tendency to sing flat, does he? That must be why the ABC has been so keen to bring out 8 CDs in as many years - several of them top-sellers, why many of the top musicians in the country want to work with him, and why his latest CD sold more than 35,000 copies in the first few weeks after release and is still holding its own.

You are absolutely right. The voice is disgusting, and he has gradually destroyed it from a pleasant instrument to the complete mess it is today. As for releasing albums....its amazing what a studio sound technician can do. Live performance seperates the men from the boys.
Far too much flat singing.

Vocally not his best performance but he is still a great singer.

David, himself, would be disappointed in this performance.

He is THE MAN!

Absolutely wonderful like everything David does. Is he the man or is he the man?

I don't know about others and their opinions on David's singing, but I thought his version was great.

This is bland and soulless like most of singing.

It is a song full of soul. David Hobson made it boring.

This guy has a tendency of singing flat. It's the worst version I've heard of this song.
