  • LONG LIVE THE SOUTH

    GREAT MOVIE

    resistance against federal terrorism

  • brought this movie today - just for Skeet <3

  • If anyone would do to my family what the Yankees did to Bloody Bill's family... I'd go postal as well. Seriously. That's where the gloves come off.

  • i love this movie but the trailer doesn't do it justice.

  • my math teachers husband was in that movie and he was in the patriot

  • At least the bushwackers didn't burn down the Free State Brewery on Mass Street in Lawrence...whoosh!!

  • Spiderman?

  • @ToArmsForDixie yep lol

  • The movie was okay, but why "ride with the devil"? Was the writer hinting that Quantrill was a devil? He and "Bloody Bill" are my heroes; they gave the damn yankees their just due. Make it "Ride With the Avenging Angels".

  • On April 27th, Criterion will be releasing a director's version cut that is thirteen minutes longer and has multiple bonus features and commentaries that they are famous for.

  • I saw this on the TV and had to get the DVD. This movie is on a par with Cold Mountain for sure. I don't understand why this movie is so little known - it has an all-star cast, a good script and deep characterisation and deals with the delicate issue of the Civil War fairly and unflinchingly.

The one criticism I have of the movie regards its length. It always feels to me like a movie of two halves that don't gel. I mean the character turnover is just insane lol.

  • @Shnufkin good post!! scroll down and read my comments on this movie..

  • great movie. anyone know the name of the song used in this trailer from the 50 second mark on?

  • @herronmc2011 its from Meet Joe Black

  • This movie is brilliant and just goes to prove that the amount of money a film makes has no bearing on how good it is

  • hahaha this movie took 38 million to make and it only made 600,000 thousand

    what a bust

  • Contrary to liberal idiots and commercial slaves, we, conservatives, don't value things trough masses, commercialism, money or idiots like you.

  • wow that was a mouthfull, so im guessing you were probably one of 50 people that actually went to watch this movie... well excuse me for not making it 51 because of shitty trailers like the one you have

  • The only shitty thing about this trailer, is that morons like you can post on it.

  • yh we get to post the truth like how fucking shitty it is... if it was a good trailer or even a good movie it would have more than just 10,000 views

  • It has more than 10.000 views, retard.

  • @SturmUndDrang13

hahaha dude 10,000 views is nothing, most trailers get atleast 300,000 views

    only good movies i guess

  • Shitface, it has more views than 10.000. But I suppose only good known movies are good in your perception. Loser.

  • listen all im saying is if t was a good movie it wouldnt have lost so much money and have so little views

  • Very good movie! Accurate portrayal, weapons and saddles! The things I pay attention to in the Civil War flicks are saddles and weapons!

  • @commandershay all my friends who were in this movie are all period correct re-enactors... they used Mccllelan saddles, and a few early period spanish style saddles... along with the various assortment of cap and ball remingtons, colts, various shotguns and spencer rifles... you are correct the attention to detail is unmatched

  • great film. i live in the border areas where alot of this stuff went on, and my school is practically ON the battlefield of westport

  • ahhh westport... a huge cavalry engagement.. that the union managed to win... they won because of the superiority in numbers of course.. (when they won that was usually the case) ... wish General Jo Shelby woulda had a couple more regiments of his vaunted Rebel Horsemen.. woulda turned out much differently..

  • awesome movie

  • Historicaly, there was a contingent of black union soldiers (played by whites only in the movie) along with some white union soldiers camped outside of Lawerence on the morning of the raid... they were engaged by the Gureillas and soundly routed and sent packing... After they were trounced, Lawerence was left defenseless.. They DID however round up any white male in Lawerence older than 15 and shoot them dead...

  • Although the book and the movie are both ficticious, alot of the back story and circumstantial conditions shown, are based on reality.. but for accuracy there were NO blacks in Lawerence at the time of the raid.. there were no blacks piled up dead in the streets after being shot either... Ang Lee just used some "artistic license" unfortunately and inaccurately for the sake of entertainment..

  • but there was a black scout for the guerillas

  • Yes in the movie "Holt" Jeffery Wrights character was a Confederate Gurellia he was described as a "scout" by "Cave Wyatt" Jonathan Brandis' character as being "a damn fine scout".. "and a good Yankee killer.." he was a scout because he could track and could tell when he was being tracked by the enemy.. he could also find the quickest and safest way in the country because he also knew it well...

  • My memory needs refreshing but there was another black scout the reconnoirted lawrence and was captured

  • To my recollection... the only one captured and or killed on the gurellia side at Lawerence was a gurellia named Larkin Skaggs. He is potrayed accurately in the movie as the one who had tied the federal flag to the tail of his horse and afterwards rode through town.

After the flag fiasco, Larkin got falling down pissy pants drunk and was discovered by some townsfolk and federal troops passed out somewhere who moved in after the gureillas had left. Skaggs who was caucasian, was hung there after.

  • he was captured before the actual raid, and was mentioned in Greggs papers in the khs. Ill have to get home and dig them up, copies that is

  • I would be interested to hear any data that you have on the subject. Very interesting. Good post. I look forward to hearing about it. You say Greggs papers... which Gregg are you referring too? I have never been to the Kansas historical society web page would they be there possibly?

  • I missed being an extra in this movie by about 3 months... This was shot on location in Missouri and Kansas... Alot of my friends are in this movie as well... The press and the NAACP killed this movie after its release because it showed a positive potrayl of a black Missouri Confederate gureilla... This story, is from a book called "Woe to live on" by Daniel Woodrell... the name "Ride with the devil" is the name of one of the chapters of that book...

  • @Araido1968 Which was very stupid on part of NAACP. This movie does not advocate slavery and racism, not one bit. Just to the contraty, freedom and dignity is one of the major ideas of "Ride with the devil". One of the best movies, one of the best performances by Jeffrey Wright.

  • Im from missourah not missouri...And this movie makes me proud.

  • masterpiece!

  • Best Movie Ever

  • William Quantrill is da fukin man ....

  • I'm laughing my ass off, you're so funny. Retard.

  • Just watched this movie today, really enjoyed it. I have decided to make more of an effort to understand both sides of the conflict.

  • I also think the character "Black John" must surely be based on Bill Anderson? And the "Pitt Mackeson" character on Jesse James perhaps?

  • I'm not really familiar with American legends and heroes from back in the day. I do know Jesse James, and it's perhaps possible, but I know for a fact that Jesse James rode with Robert E. Lee, and he's not in the film, nor the region of Missouri.

  • See comment above, and buy yourself T.J Stile's book its really good, and a treat for "Bushwhacker" historians

  • "Black John" is indeed based upon Anderson, "Pitt" is based upon his Lt. "Little Archie" Clement. Jesse rode w/ Anderson, Frank his brother w/ Quantrill. I am a 1st cousin 4x removed to the James boys -- my ancestor Richard West, their 1st cousin also rode w/ Anderson, & Jesse use to stay @ the West home in East Missouri later in his life (& sometimes use the family name as an alias).

  • I failed to mention that the part of Jake getting the tip of his finger blown off was very loosely inspired by Jesse getting his finger also blown off. Sorry.

  • Very interesting, One of my family names is Pitts, I guess you will make the connection. I had forgot about Little Archie, but they reckon Jesse was too young to be in on the Lawrence Raid but who knows for sure?

  • Indeed ;-) One of my good friends is Frank Younger, a distant nephew of the Younger boys. My grandfather grew up with a great number of descendants of Quantrill's men. It's good to hear from another. . . .yeah, most agree that Jesse didn't join up until after Lawrence, although Frank was there (as was Cole Younger).

  • wow

    this video is doing well

  • uhm... No James didnt ride with Lee or anywhere near him... Lee was the Confederate commander in the East.. Jesse and his Gurellia compatriots rode in Missouri and parts west exclusively... the two men never met

  • Surely one of the best Westerns ever made, If indeed that is how you can describe it, perhaps is is better described as a war movie. The Action scenes are certainly very harrowing

  • Jesse James rode with Bill Anderson and came from Clay County Missouri. Anyone with an interest should read T.J. Stile's book Jesse James; Last Rebel of the Civil War, and will then realise just how good this film is.

  • Can only agree and heartily recommend Stiles book. If you can get your hands on The Devil Knows How to Ride: The True Story of William Clarke Quantrill and his Confederate Raiders by Edward E. Leslie then do.

  • Many thanks indeed!! I will look out for it.

  • A great book I have read it... good post..

  • why is spiderman in the civil war

  • He's called Tobey Maguire. He's an actor...

  • great find!

  • This movie was on only 8 screens for 3 days only in 2000..Thats sad...My Dad has a baseball cap with the title on the front it was from my uncle who worked for a movie company

  • Go back to your slums, retard.

  • Ein guter Film von Freiheit und Treue!

  • LOL, preview guy!! Zaligen film :)

Schitterenden man gewoon!

  • wow Ive never seen that many thumbs befor..lol

  • That is such a moving movie, unfortunally the defiant & romantic view of the South has clouded the reality of History. Also, the Union Victory and the rewriting of History by Northern Abolitionists after the war elevating the role of Slavery over all others (State Rights vs Federal Supremacy, Right of Secesion vs Federal Union Without Disolution, etc.). In reality both sides were unperfect and as the war wore on, lost sight of the original reasons of the conflict.

  • Our cities where burned and looted, our women was raped, the blacks that fought with the Sout was all hung,it had nothing to do with slavery and Lincoln was the Hitler of that era

  • Never forget, never forgive.

  • oh please. are you going to hold a 150 year old grudge. the south abandoned the union, thats that.

  • No, the Union forced the South out of the union with centralism, unfair economism and non-balance between slave -and 'free' states.

  • Well, we're obviously going to have different opinions on the subject since we may come from different parts of the country

  • Well, I'm not from America, I'm from Europe. I do know my history though.

  • Well I'm from a Northern State, and I'm sure a southerner would have a different opinion about it as well.

  • Probably. Still, it's sad. it's not about opinions, it's about historical facts.

  • I'm a little confused...are you an advocate of slavery?

  • No, it's about historical perspective. Slavery in the 21th century is of course intolerable. We were talking about the eightteenth century and how the situation grew in the ages to the era of Lincoln. For the record, the original idea of Lincoln was to ship all blacks back to Africa. Of course, al the lefties who adore him now don't have a clue about this fact.

  • Just want to add: the black people where better off in the South before the civil war then after. The civil war made hate towards black people and racism grow out of proportions. Before the civil war they were treated very well because slavery import was forbidden and a slave was worth a lot.

Note: Robert E. Lee wanted to abolish slavery also, so why would he fight against the "GOOD SIDE"?

  • You are right Freakhistoryguy..I guess your name says it all

  • Well I am from the South.. the actual 12th star on the flag and the 12th state of the old Confederacy... Missouri... and from what I am reading SturmUndDrang is pretty well "spot on" with most of the observations he has made that I have read..

  • 19th*

  • no I hold no grudges..Im Southern and thats that

  • @americaneagle1967 "... the blacks that fought with the Sout were all hung". Cite a source for this statement, please.
