Miss McNair was very versatile and had success with this single. She would have gone on to become one of the companys brightest stars had she been pushed and developed. I nsteadd her recordings were left to collect dust in the vaults .Her recordings of Smokey Robinson songs are incredible. Her OH BE MY LOVE is the best version on record.
Barbara was wasted at Motown they had no idea of the what to do with this precious gem of talent they possesed and never developed her potential. They squandered the talents of Leslie Uggams, and Diahann Carroll also. The Smokey material and this song shows what appeal McNair had to a 60's early 70's pop audience . The song was a hit and others would have followed had anyone bothered to give McNair some attention and care. She was neglected and ignored.
got the original of this ... luv'd it when it came out ... none of my mates did ... said it was too soppy ... can't ever remember hearing it played anywhere ..... well i luv'd it and kept it ... glad i did ... ktf ... C A L .
Motown never knew what to do with McNair. I have everything she ever recorded for label, released and unreleased, including enough Smokey for two albums. She is brilliant on each and every recording. But it's her doing Motown everyone else has done already when the label should have assigned one great producer to her and a great writing team to serve her. She made fabulous records for the label anyway but even she thought the label didn't know what to do with her.
@waynebrasler , they should of gave her Smokey Robinson, by that time he was just writing music for his group and the Marvelettes. Berry was to focused on the group who already had hits before her, a bad mistake. When Mary Wells left, Barbara could have easily picked up the pieces and rocked the house, oh well.
When Mary Wells left (terrible decision on her part but she was lured by the promise of a film contract her new label had no intention of fulfilling) Berry immediately began recording her new songs with the Supremes. So the Supremes, and Diana Ross specifically, became Mary Wells' replacement.
@waynebrasler , unofficially at least, there was still a hole left by Mary Wells departure, not knocking the supremes but theres is just something about a Motown solo singer that not even a girl group whos one member has a superiority complex can't replace, no matter how far back Mary, Cindy or Flo or pushed back behind Diana in live performances.
@Umitencho Saleswise, of course, the Supremes more than filled the hole. Motown kept searching for the right Mary Wells-type solo in Brenda Holloway, Chris Clark and even Kiki Dee but they never caught fire (the Chris Clark and Kiki Dee albums are almost interchangeable). Had Mary Wells stayed with Motown she could have gone on with hits forever; Smokey adored her and she was very easy to record. On stage, she was a sensation. Gordy begged her to stay; she wouldn't listen. You know the rest.
@waynebrasler - I agree but there was still a hole left presence wise. If the Supremes had that as well, Motown wouldn't have been looking like they did, all I am saying is Barbara could have been whatthey were looking for but unfortuantely she was what i call loyal as she recorded for many labels. As Brenda, she came the closet but Motown couldn't handle the fact that she wrote her own songs so even after getting hits she was doomed to fail, not be her but by the sexism at motown.
Well, there was a problem with Brenda Holloway in that she was an unaminated stage perform and always looked as if every small movement had been practiced to the point she was a robot going through the motions. She was, however, a tremendous talent and made exceptional records, so many of them never seeing the light of day. She of course was also an outstanding songwriter and there is where she made her money.
@waynebrasler-Very true, if they had Cholly working on her moves and had her writing songs maybe Motown could have not suffered from H-D-H departure all that much but you never know. Brenda just didn't fit in the Motown mold so ever after she had hits Motown was at a loss as what to do for her. In my opinion she had the potential but Motown didn't really try with her.
@waynebrasler- I agree with you. She was to talented. Motown seems to not like Females that can write. Yes they were some in the company but not many.
@waynebrasler, had never heard of this woman.. Maybe they didn't know what to do with her because she wasn't promoted enough to be noticed, and the market for her sound was already gobbled up by the likes of Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Bassey, etc...Her vocals sound quite generic to me
ok--time for learning that ugly racial comment--all people in america who have 1 drop of black blood are forced to declare themselves as black whether you look like paris hilton or stephanie mills..stop it!
Black or white, who the fuck cares! The song is totally amazing and one of Motown's and Northern Soul's iconic trax. Have it on first-release demo!!!! Sad, sensitive and so, so beautiful! NRGrules.
