I have worked union jobs, this is what organized labor is to me, it gives some organization the right to strong arm money out of my check to give money to people to make laws and vote in direct contradiction to what I believe. A person should be able to make his own judgment whether he chooses to belong to a union or not! And that does not mean contributing dues to a non charitable organization instead. I believe that this country was founded on choice, if you choose to belong, fine, I do not!
@stetsonwalker Then don't join, that's your right, or didn't you know that was the Law. Of course you still have to pay dues to them, but you still pay taxes even if the person you voted for didn't win, don't you? Same thing here. The collective bargaining results in your getting representation for a fair wage, retirement and benifits, even if you don't agree with who they suport.
Be honest, how fair would it be if you didn't pay and got the advantages anyway?
@TheLastDeity If I choose not to subscribe to a magazine, I do not pay the price anyway, that does not mean I cannot read an article while waiting for the doctor or dentist!
@stetsonwalker Even so, the Dentist has paid for it, and subscribed to that magazine, right? His fee (your Bill) when you visit him has his "Cost Overhead" factored into it to run his practice, and guess what that means? You, and his other patients, have collectivly paid for that magazine your reading. Therefor, the Dentist has chosen that magazine (as your Unions Representitive), not you or any of the other patients and decieded what will be available to read.
@TheLastDeity not true, I have been to dentists as well as doctors that had no magazines...I did not insist on one. Furthermore if you check (as I have) most of those mags are donated either by happy meaning well clients or non profit (usually religious) groups.
@stetsonwalker Your analogy, not mine, don't blame me it dosen't make sense and you wandered so far from the point :) Go back to Politics; do you still pay taxes when who you voted for didn't win? Just answer that, we both know the answer, so just say it.
@TheLastDeity I do pay taxes, BIG difference. As a citizen of the nation, I do not know how to avoid the taxes without losing my shit or going to jail. If there was a choice there are certain taxes I would absolve myself from. (I ONLY pay taxes when it can be traced if I did not) But a union is not a government deity and should not have the power government has, unless the unions want to turn themselves over to the government to be ran by officials (don't see that happening).
Hey man, what part of "There's no more money, The taxpayer is tapped out" don't you understand? Come on, we're not stupid, we all know what "Collective Bargaining" is supposed to accomplish and if you're a taxpayer or just a citizen you know its wrong. Now if you're a beneficiary of this system of thuggery, mob rule, then selfishness and greed take over and you really don't care how many people lose their jobs just so you can get taxpayers to pay for your health care and pension.
Thank god Scott Walker was dumb enough to get caught on tape or we would still have to try and convince people that he was a shady corrupt corporate puppet.
I mean anyone paying attention knew he was just busting up unions at the behest of the ultra wealthy and his bill had nothing to do with money but now he let everyone know even if they didn't want to know.
Next time the Koch brothers buy a Governor maybe they should make sure he is not a complete idiot.
@TheMasterTate The only complete idiot is you. For all your petulant narrow minded ranting about boo-hoo Scott Walker is taking union rights away, the unions took the common man's rights away long ago when they set up a closed shop so that you have to be a union member to work at one of these state agencies. Where's the individual choice in that? It's about time that losers like you got the screws put to you...and Scott Walker is just the man to do it.
@meccaturbo Uneducated? I've got a master's degree. Lazy? I worked my way through college with 3 jobs and have 19 years experience in my field. Have worked hard my whole life. "Union sympathizing"? Hell yeah, you worthless piece of conservative shit, I AM union sympathizing and PROUD of it. They're damn good people! Now STFU.
@meccaturbo You are an ignorant person. Ignorant to the history of America and to the benefits realized by all of us because of the courageous actions by organized labor. Read some history and stop watching Fox lemming. Follow the $.
@jdgrab1 You're the ignorant one - too ignorant to understand what CHANGE means. CHANGE means that union gains, while hard fought and necessary in the past, have outlived their usefulness. The world has changed. You retards will support unions no matter what, all the while teh country sinks further and further into debt. Your stupidity is astounding.
Even FDR upheld the position that public employee unions should never be allowed. This guy has not addressed any facts. It's all just based on his feelings. Makes it hard to take someone serious when there selling point is that Wisconsin is a traditional union stronghold. Public unions have not been around for that long, period. I live in a right to work state and it certainly hasn't destroyed government. If anything, our country could use a little constructive destruction of the government.
John Nichols is a par for the course Liberal....in other words he is an Economic Dunce.
Economic Dunces can't do simple arithmetic. You can draw them a picture showing that ALL THE MONEY over 350k (household income) can be confiscated, and it still won't balance the Federal Budget. On a state level, we are similarly broke.
Many of those people protesting have household incomes exceeding 200k---Obama and his Jacobins were calling that RICH recently.
If the rich were paying anywhere near the percentage in taxes that they were in the 1950's there would be no problem. They are raping and pillaging the country
@winnebagodude ....hey dude, why did one of your heroes, John Kennedy, think it was hurting the whole country to have marginal tax rates at 91%? He saw to it that those rates were rolled way back. It was for a reason, and it was done by one of your Liberal icons.
Go ahead, doooood---give a scholarly reply.
You know damned well that no amount of taxation is going to solve this mess. You can confiscate all income over 350k and it will not balance the budget.
A union is no guarantee of anything at all except for 2 things. 1. the right to bargain collectively with those who hold the power 2. holding those in power to honor their agreements.
they should thank God they have a job,i am losing my home ,unemployed, not sure where i will get money for food,I look at this going on,and think they have no clue, one day soon they will be like me ,with nothing left
@MrOne4truth I am thankful to have a job. If you get unemployment, you can thank the unions. Think about this: It is the public employees who will be educating your children. This education includes caring for their health and well-being. Do you want to have these people treated so disrespectfully? Good luck.
@kathy512 so you would have no problem if all farm workers joined a union, demanded union wages, pensions ,health care, no one would be able to buy food ,it would cost more to eat than people make everyone would lose their homes, most would starve to death
@whodoesknow99 I wont even touch the cancer comment because it's reprehensible. As for the teacher's salary, the way they figure out the "average" salary is by counting EVERY single job. Now let's say for instance I am a math teacher and I make $50,000.00 a year and I also coach baseball for $10,000.00 a year. That counts as 2 jobs, so therefore the average salary is $30,000.00 a year, when in actuality I would make $60,000.00 a year.
walker did not go after the police union. why??? he is going to need their protection while this is going on. after he breaks the teachers union he will go after the cops.
@jackrabitcafe they (police, firefighters and state troopers union) supported him. Interesting isn't it. They are the ones he didn't go after with his union busting. GO WI14!!!!! Walker wants to break unions. I think it would be just matter of time thought that they would loose their rights too. This isn't about the money.
@baldrad1 Milking?? You are confusing big shots in government with all the little people who are paid SQUAT. Private sector employees, at least in my area, which is technical, are incredibly underpaid. And the "cadillac benefits" people always talk about is a myth. I wish people knew what they were talking about when they opened their mouths.
Stupid monkeyrunner: Politicians like Scott Walker are such fucking scum, hard working cops firemen teachers prison guards etc have to protect themselves
@whodoesknow99 , the people who pay for the cops, firemen, teachers and prison guards are sick of paying their gravy pensions and salaries. Govt is too big and its time to cut. Get used to it, Wisconsin won't be the last.
Scott Walker is outstanding, and is doing exactly what he said. Unions do not belong in government, the private sector is another story.Doyle was a nightmare. Government created jobs in government is NOT a job creation it is tax nightmare.
People are sick of tax and spend government, the last election proved that to be true and 2012 will be another house cleaning of tax and spend idiots.
@cbsteffen , Those aren't jobs, they are a burden on the system. Paying a 40k per year govt worker is NOT the same as paying someone 40k at Walmart. They take out MUCH more than they put in. They are not jobs.
If these irresponsible politicians hadn't been making ridiculous contracts with overpaid and generally useless public union employees, Wisconsin wouldn't have to make these kind of cuts now. This is what happens when a politician gets to spend unearned money and isn't the least bit accountable for piss poor investments or downright disastrous outcomes.
How many examples do you need before you realize government intervention wrecks everything?
Good. At this point, let them. Let the people learn the hard way. Break Government, let the Private Sector take over. Let the Private Sector rape the masses into another depression. Maybe then the public will pick up a book and learn about what the Wobblies fought so hard for.
@rickbar123 Yes. The crazy thing about the comments here is that the commenters have fallen hook, line, and sinker for rightist rhetoric, believing that public employees have caused the recession.
@kathy512 After reading Thomas Frank's "The Wrecking Crew" , I think these people must be freaking nuts to trust the repubs. They turn everyplace they rule into a toilet.
