The way I do it isn't on here, but it's similar. I hold the darts so the stem rests on the fleshy part between my forefinger and thumb, with my middle and forefinger I hold the darts (not pencil grip) and my ring finger comes round and rests right on the very tip of the dart. It's the way I've always done it but I've noticed that the dart spins ALOT more than any conventional way and it fly's straight rather than arc'ing
This technique sucks. The way you do it is you just hold the dart straight like you want it to go. But how you do it you just look where you want the dart to go. Look at the spot. Then don't even think about the spot just look at it and throw the dart at the spot. If you try to think and throw at the spot you will never hit it, The way to get good is practice and practice for a couple hours a day. Before long you' be able to hit the spots. ALways throw the dart the same way. But this guy is wrong
The throws weren't accurate at all! At the end the grouping was dreadful, if this worked the pros would use it, imagine Phil Taylor throwing like that! Haha! What do you average playing 501? No wonder Americans can't play darts, stop pissing about and throw normally.
Well, thanks a lot for the video anyway. I always find it interesting to try something new at the board. I had to laugh, when, after I watched your video, I took my darts and the first one hit the bullseye right away. Funny.
I use plastic darts (there are no standard dart boards in my country). These darts can break easily and become costly to repair. I really need to improve my game, but I'm worried this throwing style and increase the chances of my darts breaking. I will give it a try though.
To each their own, but I would think you would have to be certain that you are using the proper ratio of flight surface area to weight ratio since you are forcing the dart to correct itself in the air. If you don't focus too hard and watch the general flight path of the dart, you will see the dart oscillate alot on it's way to the board. That means if the flight is moving on the way to the board, so is the tip, and it somewhat randomizes where it will land in the board.
Although I dont agree with this method, why dont you just flip the dart around so the tip is aimed at the board when you release? You would grip near the rear of the dart but it might minimize the vertical rotation of the dart.
Also, this method doesn't seem like it would be very effective when you are trying ever-so-gently lob your dart over another dary partially blocking your target.
Well, when I learned to play darts back in 1995, the 'conventional wisdom' was to keep your upper arm parallel to the ground without moving during the entire throw. The only movement should be your upper arm, and of course slight movement in your wrist and fingers. I learned not to lean or lunge your body at all, only movement being your upper am. Anyway, I don't see any pros throwing like this. How many 180s have you hit with this method?
@pcfriedrich You are right, PC. I tried the technique for 9 months and never could get the accuracy to a decent level. I've given up on the idea. Yet, the video is so popular I want to leave it up. BTW, the accuracy is excellent on the horizontal plane, but sloppy on vertical, for me anyway.
@UncleVinnys this helped i could get the darts in the ceter ring but not much else this helped i could call the number out and hit it but i got cocky i cant do that anymore
Looks very good, but will try it. Like hitting a driver off the tee, rather than a wristy chip near the green (golf). I would stick to what works, but this method is quite interesting.
This works for a beginner, but the variable of the dart wobbling through the air trying to straighten out is why it is not accurate for players trying to compete at higher level. My opinion.
@willfullyobscure: Yeah, I've been doing it for about a year, and although I am comfortable with it, it's remains less accurate than the traditional throw.
I also throw olding from the very tip, flight forward to the target. this is only good for trick shots to impress your friends, it is very inaccurate. Again, dart configuration has a massive effect on how well your throwing technic will work. Have you considerd assembling 10 of the most common , most divergent dart configurations and quantifying the effects?
I do this to change up my throws when I get tired/bored/off my game. It really does work well once you've practiced it. I get a little less accurate, but I do it no more than 30% of the time so thats why. Depending on your dart, this throw may induce horrible wobble. front-weighted barrels and longer shafts mean more wobble.. However, i thought I invented this throw:D! for all the reasons you state. I find wrist manipulation ultimately gives me better fine placement control.
looks like u have nothing to do in your old age. If your advice is correct maybe u should run and tell Phil Taylor that he has it all wrong and that if he shoots darts your way he can improve his game ha hahahah tell your wife to let u set up your dart board inside as the wind will effect your shot... Now thats good advice hahahahaha
I've actually tried this method, before having seen this video, and it works well. Great video if you're somewhat of a beginner at darts and are frustrated with how you don't hit what spot on the board you want to hit, and would like to learn another method at throwing your darts with improved accuracy.
The reason for flexing and trying to keep the dart pointing at the target is because of the dart itself. The variables you try to eliminate by simplifying the throw become outweighed by new variables, like aerodynamics, dart imperfections and so on, variables which are kept far better under control with a "flexing" throw. The variables you "eliminate" by simplifying the throw translate into a much less predictable flight path, depending a lot more on the individual characteristics of each dart
I recently started recreative darts throwing in my room. This does indeed look like the beginning of a new technique. I'm going to experiment with it, maybe change the hand position. I'll keep you updated.
...will make the dart go somewhere else. third thing is: Is it really easier for your brain to control one big muscle so perfectly that you hit the dart right? Or is it easier to control 50 simulaniously for a balanced shot?
I am sorry, if you have problems understanding what i want to say, but I am German and so my English is not perfect.
Thanks for your observations. Yes, you present some valid points.
If one repeats any set of motions over years of practice, then the fine-tuning and precision of the throw will improve, whether or not the motions involve only a few muscles or many. The errors I mention are more difficult, I believe, because they are inter-related, and therefore any one error is multiplied by the connected actions. Finger movement may be minute, but an error there causes problems.
I have been attempting this stiff arm approach for months now, and there has not been much improvement, so the entire argument for it may be flawed. Likewise I have been practicing the traditional throw method, and that has not improved much either, so technically, it proves nothing. I would suggest the ideas expressed here are THEORETICAL more than practical. We would need an experienced person to test the theory. My humble opinion.
This is the technique that comes naturally to me, and my accuracy isnt that bad considering im a beginner. Are there any "legends" that use this method? seems like everyone uses the same kind of method such as Taylor, and Lowe, etc.
"When the dart is released it is nearly horizontally, but still points up a bit. In every circumstances a dart that points down in any of the throwing phases is bad, bad, bad! You got it? That's another DON'T! " from dartbase.com
Here in the real world, sentences begin with a capital and end with a period or other punctuation. "What a moron!" The contraction of 'you are' is "you're." You're just stupid." But, hey, thanks for the feedback.
what a moron nobody in their right mind would play like that ... everybody knows the best action is to have as little moving as possible and to get the flight of the dart in the straight line ... aka phil taylor your just stupid
Good question. I don't know. Like I said, we need some slow-motion, or high-speed video to do some tests. I'll see if I can run some tests. I know there is a lot of resistance in professional circles to this throw, but in the rank and file . . .more accepting.
Just wondering how different shaft lengths affect the accuracy of throw. I would think the shorter the better. Shorter being that dart rights it self quicker. Just looking for any comments. I know quite a few darters who throw like this. They just picked up darts and have been throwing like this for years. Though the majority of dart community and league players do not condone this type of throw. Most of these players are above average darters. So go figure.
I throw both ways but find a slight wrist snap with less arm movement dramatically increases my precision. I think if you watch your throw very closely you are actuality releasing your dart very parallel to the ground.
This means your fingers must be spinning on the dart more to compensate for the stiff wrist. IMHO.
I've been trying to train to throw both ways - the traditional method and the technique shown here. I don't see much of a difference in accuracy, but the stiff wrist does FEEL more natural. There is definitely a wobble to the dart, but by throwing the same way you can compensate for that. I would need a high speed video to see if the wobble is totally dampened by the time the dart reaches the board.
I use the stiff wrist on my thierd dart, because I always lung on that one.
My third dart accuracy has very much emproved. I think it's also that I have to think about chaging styles so I also think about NOT lunging. Good vidio. ty

great Video.
the only thing that does not sound right to me is that you say, that you want to reduce the number of variables, that you have to controle.
In the traditional method the dart (darts?) is flying horizontally and always the same. So when it leaves your hand there are no variables left.
In the "new" method it spins. This seems to be a not easy controllable variable to me.
And I dont really think that you only have to control your forearm. Even little movement in your fingertips...
