  • goood movie

  • Niggers in Situ!

Get out your cameras, tape recorders and note pads.

  • so uplifting a story..Most of us would dive out the window from claustrophobia.in that situation. The power of the human spirit to endure

  • Oh what a movie!!! what a dillemma, situation with this family in a crowded apartment. I also enjoyed the latest film but it is something about this one that just does it for you.

  • best part of this is that it's the origanal cast from the origanal broadway :)

  • A great Movie, never seen it before & the new version done great justice, thanks for uploading this ilovesidneypoitier great link!

  • @colabuji1 oh yeah, done it great justice by has the gall to cast that loser in Mr. Sidney part, like there were no other real ACTORS available...anyway this version is the one and only one that matters...

  • Without offense intended, this film is sort of like a black version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" if you think about it. Or are a lot of people's lives like that?

  • I will watch this so as not to read the book.

  • I came across this movie earlier on TMC and I thought it was a good movie. I didn't know the name of it, until a co-worker had called and told me. I missed the beginning of it so I came here. I knew it would be on youtube.

  • im reading this in english class, thanks for the upload now i can pass any test without actually reading

  • I've listened to the original Broadway recording (many times) of the play from 1959 with Ossie Davis playing Walter. Not to take away from Sidney, but just listening to Ossie's performance, he's magnificent! It's staggeringly great!

  • this is mastery

  • This is much bettet than reding the screen play just dont tell my english teacher

  • Thanks for uploading this. I needed it for my school work. (=

  • why does walter have an accent...

  • oh yes was hot

  • thanks for the upload! needed to rent it for a homework assignment and couldn't find it anywhere but on the old reliable youtube! :)

  • I just finished reading this for English class. The other version of the movie with Diddy is just horrible. Thank you for uploading this version. This one is way more accurate!!!

  • I hate i have to do a project for this in english

  • Where is part 2

  • wow.. all of you peeps watching this instead od reading are lazy. I love to read

  • @19lionkingfan Nobody cares about you. This is a great movie with some superb acting. Keep your dumb book, I read it and I like the movie much better.

  • @SclafaniBagni um, excuse me? I never dissed the movie. And I'm not reading the book. I was saying, people who watched this instead of doing their assignment, which was reading the book, are just lazy. And even if I did mean to say that the movie was stupid and I liked the book better, which is not true, you shouldn't get all worked up over other people's opinions. It's their opinion. And yes, people do care about me. I have family and friends, and they care very much about me.

  • @19lionkingfan Literal troll is literal.

  • @SclafaniBagni whatever.

  • @19lionkingfan my professor gave us the option to read the book or watch this version of the movie... you already know what the class chose to do lol (:

  • im just watching this cuz i have to read it for school its not half bad well the book isnt...

  • @poofaceyperson same here lol!

  • Is like everyone just watching this cause they had to read those books over the summer cause i know i am. :D

  • @TehAzen No. This is my favorite book, play and movie. Just finished watching the Phylicia Rashad and Sean Combs version. Nice but Sidney and Claudia McNeil own these characters. I never get tired of this story.

  • nice, now i dont have to read it...

  • YEAA THIS HELPED ME WITH SUMMMER READING!!

  • HAT DAWG

  • Finding this is a blessing for an old lady retired and homebound. TY

  • i have to read the book for school :/

  • @polkadotttlover lol i thought the same thing. i just got it today and the book was actually not that bad. it's quite emotional and a little bit sad but it leaves you feeling pretty good you know? You should give the book a chance and i'm sure you'll like it :) but i must say if i had found this first i dont think i would have spent the 2 hours of my life i did to read this lol but no seriously, read it and you'll most likely like it.

  • @readingrox19 Ohh okay thanks! (:

  • skip to 1:26 TO MOVIE.... FUCKEN INTRO MAKES U WANT TO KILL A KITTEN

  • this is just as boring as the book ugh:/

  • wonderful movie! almost as good as "Lillie's of the field"

  • Thanks so much for uploading this! I've seen the 1989 version with Danny Glover, and my mom said this one was even better, having seen it herself a number of years before.

  • Classic!

  • holly damn, had to watch this movie for my final exam and i don't understand a WORD of what they are saying. I'll try to find a review instead

  • @1rubi111 I'm a bit bemused by your comment . You mean you did not understand the words??? the dialect? or was the soundtrack defective? -- If it was the latter, you missed out. --- If it was on eof the former, -- that just a sad commentary on our educational system.

  • @penciltest2 -- and speaking of educational system, I should learn to spell check LOL

  • always my favorite...thank u for uploading!

  • thank god this is on youtube..i need to use this for summer school

  • i used this for my literature exam lol

  • i show the other version but this version is way better.....

  • I love this version

  • hehe thanks for the upload. now i wont have to read the book :)

  • man this is awesome actin, i feel his pain about the waking up forcefully thing. such horiblee feeling

  • Newchie get yo ass down heeuh before i get ma gat and cap yo ass!

  • this is sooo much better! Originality is the best!

  • This is great!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!!!NOW I DONT HAVE TO READ THE BOOK FOR MY PROJECT!YESSS

  • 50 cents was like 50 dollars in todays money.

  • I am doing a paper on which movie, (classic or modern), better depicts Lorraine Hansberry's original work? Any ideas?

  • Oh it's no comparrison-- the 1961 version is far better than the later version. First of all Sean Comb is no actor (matter of fact he is on my "Worst Actors" list)-- Sorry Puffy. He's a great music entertainer, but they should lock the studio doors when they see him coming. The orginal version is loaded with all the family dynamics of that era, and it is definitely a moving and timeless classic. Thanks so much for the upload.

  • An older lady to me about this movie, and to go and watch it. It maybe before my lifetime, however, classic's last generations and are still wonderful to watch! So here I am.

  • I love this movie. And no disrespect to the actors who remade it, but it doesn't compare to Sidney Potier and Ruby D.

  • I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL THE VIEWERS WHO HAD LEFT WONDERFUL COMMENTS REGARDING THIS OUTSTANDING CLASSIC MOVIE SINCE I HAVE UPLOADED IT. I'M SO GLAD YOU TUBE WATCHERS ENJOY THIS MOVIE AS MUCH AS I DO. IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO SHARE THIS MOVIE WITH MY FELLOW YOU TUBERS.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier I am glad you put it up! I'm about to write a critical analysis over this and I feel this will really help reiterate some points I thought of when I read it. Carmen Jones got me started on these classic films, now it's old dramas I'm reading in English. So, thanks on behalf of this paper I'm about to write and my newfound addiction to classics. :)

  • @BenniJonquil Actually, the correct way to say it would be iterate... iterate means to repeat, as does the prefix re-. saying reiterate basically says "repeat the repeat." Sorry... I like technically correct usage of things...

  • @ilovesidneypoitier did you ever read the book?

  • the part when Walter is in bed struggling to get up is hilarious!!!

  • 6:56 i thought he was gonna punch her

  • @r4mp4g1 ikr me too LOL

  • travis is so adorable!

  • i`ve seen this this movie in school, i like the part when Walter say "Damn my eggs... Damn all the eggs that ever was." lol that was awsome

  • this is the best play ever

  • this is a very good movie

  • I need to finish reading this book in 3 days. Haven't even started. TY FOR UPLOAD! :D

  • we re doing an assignment and i just got through doing this in high school

  • I remember watching this on TV a few years ago. I missed the first 20 minutes or so but I was instantly hooked on it. Sterling acting from Sidney Poitier!! Thanks for the upload! :-)

  • BomB!

  • Thank you for posting!

  • im beneatha in my school play!

  • I need to watch this Film with German subs. Or completely in german... can anyone help me ?

  • Thanks you so much for posting this ! you helped me get an A in my Literature exams :D

  • I am so going to subscribe to you. I AM SO IN LOVE WITH SIDNEY POTIER!

  • i love this movie.. but my favorite is the Bill Duke directed play starring Danny Glover.

  • If you ever walk into a room with a lot of Black People where your don't usually find Black People say: "What the heck is this? A Revival of a Raisin in the Sun?"

  • Oh wow... I saw this before but missed the title credits so I didn't know what it was called. Thanks for uploading it. Now I can watch it again.

  • I believe he has skills to teach upcoming young actors these days!!

  • Nobody but nobody can beat the movie with Sidney Poiter. He is the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this movie is incredible. i can't believe people will pick out groups of other people and be mean on the basis of who they are rather than what they do. we still do that but it gets better though it may never go away. i wish they could have filmed the original Broadway performance that made this such a hit. when it gets to the one part later on it makes me feel a little bad for being lightskin X)

  • Walter Lee: "What're you doing all that yelling for if I can't get in there!" Love that line and I love this movie. Classic!!

  • I have to say I enjoyed both movies; however, I prefer the original to the remake. This stayed closer to the original dialogue that was written by Lorraine Hansberry who had a knack for bring reality through words. I am in love with the play--read at least 100 times--but never got to see the revival come to broadway. I was delighted with Sanaa Lathan, Phylicia Rashad, and Audra McDonald's performances in the movie's revival but much prefer the original with the amazing Sidney Poitier!

  • OMG we are reading this in class and this guy Alec makes a PERFECT Walter! He is SOOOO funny doing him, especially in that drunk scene!

  • Thank god for youtube cause im not reading this for homework

  • I LOVE THIS BOOK :D I swear man i could just buy a book rip pages smoke weed with it me and the book will be 1 :D

  • did somebody fix the sound and, it look's like their not talking or something.

  • I thought Puffy did a good job in the 2008 version of this movie ...until I saw Sidney blow it up! After seeing the original I know that Puffy has to be pretty bold and confident to try to perform a role that has already been masterfully done by a legend.

  • THIS VERSION IS BETTER!!!!

  • is the movie exactly the same as the book? because i had to read it a long time ago.

  • I am now about to watch this, Ive never heard of it before, but just caught the trailer for a TV version, which I probably wont watch.

Fuck its got Sidney in, it, so its already good. Ahh but then it would, just noticed the name of the uploader.

It was reccomended viewing from an atheist site, how cool is that, I dont know why, but I will find out over the next hour or so.

  • not very good sound quality. i just finished this book for summer homework

  • Im doing this play for a HS Drama play, im gonna be ruth, and this helped me so much, to find out how to do the characters. THANX

  • Ruby Dee is the most gorgeous woman that ever lived. Thanks so much for posting.

  • I just read the book, I think the book came after, but still great story. Thanks for the upload. Really helps me further understand it. Cheeeers

  • i gotta read this book , its very interesting

  • @XxabsentlifexX if it was so boring then why search the movie on youtube ? if you have something bad to say then just keep to yourself ( not trynna start drama)

  • There is no comparing, the original is better then what Sean Combs wrecked in 2008. He was a disgrace to the movie, but Sidney Poitier was wonderful, the original is always better. Those old school actor/actress had more passion and conviction in their acting then these half acting actor/actress these days.

  • I love old movies

  • how close is this to the original play?

  • lol im doin summer school and i have to watch this whole thing, than write a compare and contrast paper... so im glad i found this, thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • this one has the greats..i'll give my feedback soon:)

  • Thank you so much, I have a final exam on this book tomorrow but im too lazy to read it!

  • thank u so much for puting this up, i have a final on monday and i dont have time to read the book, and i love sydney too thanx

  • this video sucks

  • thanks a lot for the link.all great films-thanks man.

  • Claudia McNeil was actually too young to really be Poitier and Sands mother, but the makeup department and her own ample frame did wonders. I had a big bosomy and protective grandmom myself, was the first grandson in my family, and Gram thought I hung the moon, so I relate REAL well with Lena every time I watch 'Raisin.' This movies bursts with an embarrassment of rich acting talent and superb storytelling.

  • great movie. sydney poitier rules

  • Without a doubt Sid's version in every way far exceeds the newest adaptation.

The performances in the original are flawless..and timeless. No need for an update. However, Feicia Rashad was superb!. Sean Combs..not so much!

  • That is ONE tired kid XDD

  • I would like to thank you viewers who watched and enjoyed this movie. I would also like to thank you viewers who subscribed and took the time to comment on one of the best movies ever made. For those who watched the 2008 remake starring Sean Combs (Puff Diddy) please let me know which one do you think is better. I am most certain it will be the original, starring the one and only Sidney Poitier.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier raisin in the sun reminds me when i argue with my mom

  • @ilovesidneypoitier NOTHING BEATS THE ORIGINAL. Sidney Poitier is a great actor.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier HIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! I like the original,♥of course. But the newer one was still a great watch.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS SO ACCESSIBLE. I'D RENT IT ON iTUNES, BUT IT'S NOT AVAILABLE FOR RENT.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier The remake was good thanks to Phylicis Rashad, but fails in comparison to the original.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier I didn't see the 2008 remake because i don't think it would've been fair to the original but there is a 1989 teleplay that was directed by bill duke that had danny glover as walter lee and the late esther rolle (from good times fame) who played the mother and it was a beautifully portrayed show that really is understated and not found anywhere, if you can find it, you should post it and i think you might like that one better than this.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier "i love sidney potier"... =) iDo too. He's a Bahamian. And although he tries to hide it ... his accent is still there!!! :)

  • @ilovesidneypoitier

I have this movie and watched it a lot. Although the remake was ok it just didn't have the depth of the original, specifically an African Amer. woman trying to be a doctor, and challenging religious beliefs etc. and there is just nothing like the mother in this one. I wish I grew up on these kinds of movies.

  • omg i needed this i gott a test on dis

  • @sakinah112 so do i! xD

  • when is this set?

  • lol dang what time did the little boy go to bed

  • lmao rotfl it looks like da kids gonna punch his mom wen he goes in 2 hug her

  • im reading this in english right now. its so cool to look at the book and the movie at the same time cuz the words are exactly alike.

  • At 6:55 it looks like the Kid about to punch his mom in the belly!

  • thank you for sharing this here!!!

  • The woman that played the mother was the late Claudia McNeil. She and the late Diana Sands both played their roles with astounding taste. I agree with you MsKar1 when you said that you can't find good actors like this anymore. Sidney Poitier and the entire crew put this film on the map.....it will be treasured forever by those of us who appreciate great classics like this one. Many thanks for posting this.

  • @melbrown425 Claudia McNeil was the original "Madear". She once stated that she used to play the mother roles, but then she began to live it. I wished she had more profound roles to her credit and that Diana Sands was still living. Diana Sands was supposed to play along side James Earl Jones in "Claudine", but was too ill and gave the role to her friend Diahann Carroll.

  • @melbrown425 I know that's right! Be bless!

  • I love when she says, "man if you don't shut up and leave me alone". Hilarious

  • This is a classic, you can't find acting like this anymore. Sidney Poiter and the lady that played his mom was awesome! This woman made you feel it. I love actors back then they did their work from the depths of their hearts, and put all their love in it. Today you get a lot of water down stuff with no real emotions. Thank you for posting Raisin in the Sun original version. I'm not that curious to watch the one with Sean Puffy, he's NO Sidney Poiter and never will be!

  • The lady that played Walter Lee's mom should have won an emmy for her role, she was fantastic.

  • Today you get a lot of water down stuff with no real emotions.

    ----

    the same with music today

  • thanks so much for posting this

  • I like this version ALOT better than the latest one with Sean Combs. I think camera work is much better, I think the acting is ALOT better, and this one follows the book(or play) alot better they added some stuff that wasn't needed or places things in a different order in the 2008 one. But all that is just my opinion.

  • But I will admit that the 2008 one helped me understand the story a bit better. But other than that I prefer this version by far.

  • The Original is far superior than the crappy 2008 version.

  • you got to look at the actors... no fences to Phylicia Rashād Nell cater would have done it a little better.

  • @tom11zz884 Absolutley. The remake can't hold a stick to the otiginal. Most movies that are remade hardly can be compared to the original.

  • @ilovesidneypoitier like the karate kid?

  • @tom11zz884 the term i think is money grubbers. Intelligent producers would never put someone like Pdiddy in a role for a film that takes place in the 1930's. I'm sorry, but its just wrong. Pdiddy is iconic for being a rapper in modern times, it just would never work.

  • @tom11zz884 i prefer this one, 2008 is okay

  • @MountainDPoductions

I agree with you totally. Sean Combs did not do the role of Walter Lee justice to me. Not the way Sidney Poiter did or Danny Glover. The feeling of sheer hurt and dispair and utter pain that Walter felt at losing his father's insurance money after the mother had put her trust in him. The way Sidney Potier got on his knees and screamed Willyyyyyyyyyyyy! You just felt his pain. That didn't come across with Sean Combs to me. Just my opinion also

  • You are correct..Diddy isn't a true actor like Sydney Potier, or Danny Glover. Diddy is a hustler.

Diddy should have never gotten the role. The role should have gone to an unknown actor who needed a break..i'm sure that actor would have done much better that the husler Diddy.

  • Of course this version is far superior...you have great actors in this one....the 2008 version was a joke....casting a hip hop thug as Walter Lee?

  • @tom11zz884 I agree, but the women were all really professional.

  • how is walter a round character?

  • because he changes throughout the play. Especially in the end. At the beginning he thinks in a rather materialistic way (he thinks that money could solve all their problems etc) end with his ideas about that liquor store, he seems pretty egocentric. But in the end, he stands up to Mr: Lindner (who is a perfect example of a flat character btw ;] ) and proves that he's finally come into manhood.

  • Danke lieber Gott...jetzt pack ich die Klausur morgen doch ent..scheiß aufs buch! xD

  • wow this really is word for word

  • For our class, we have to just LISTEn to the story. No visuals. So glad theres a full movie on YT.

  • just finished reading this book for school

  • me 2

  • @fliprowleykid i didnt finish yet and i go back to school tomorrow, thats why i'm watching this lol

  • @fliprowleykid haha i've read it about twenty times over but my literature exam's tomorrow so... goodbye to my grades.

  • @fliprowleykid Hiiiiiii,.I bet the book was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllly good,.was it better then the movie?Books 99% better then the movies.ok,.maybe 78 % better.lol.

  • @fliprowleykid I did also :) Butt at the begining of the summer, and this refreshed my memory.

  • @fliprowleykid is the book JUSY like the movie?
