the fish in the movie is a reference to how you can not avoid change it is a natural reaction to life as in the referral to evolution of the fish we choose it but at the same time we don not make a conscious choice; it is what happens while you are planning other things so to speak.

The movie is full of metaphors such as this through out the film while still holding this very point in my opinion as in the need for everyone to change whether you want to or not it happens. so is life
