Just got this camera today with a 18-55 kit. I'm not understanding how it works that much like the focusing and get the best quality on videos. Does you have any advice for me? I'm learning more of you're video's and they are really helpfull. I hope you can help me out! I subscribed.
Thank you all for answersing my questions so i did buy this camera :) and made a noobish video i didnt know how to reset ISO LOL i am learning, do check it out , constructive comments are very welcome :) thank you fir helping
I have a question; if you flattened the image as per the blog, did you then re-sharpen it, or is the flattened image we're viewing? Either way, it's stunning.
Hey I am buying this camera in few hours, a question.. Does his camera only allow you to record 24 min in sd card at a time? that means u can still record after 1 24min video right?
This video was one of the final videos I watched of the t2i that made me purchase mine today, I had been doing research for months on whether the shortcomings of the t2i was worth it. After all the research I finally broke down and bought one today.
hi, I'm about to buy this camera, I've only had one DSLR before and didn't really fully use that it its full potenial. I'm not even sure what 1080p means (or when to use it and when not to) as well as fps. Would you say its easy to use and experiment with?
@CottonWoolJames 1080p means "Full HD" resolution and fps are frames per second (30 or 24 are a standard, 25 in Europe). It's not your average point-and-shoot camera, you need to manually control everything to get these results. If I were you I'd borrow one and experiment. Check out my blog if you want to learn more about these cameras.
This footage is stunning, even in 360p. You clearly don't need any CINE mode like on the Canon camcorders, because the gamma and dynamic range are prefect already.
I'm about a college student about to buy the rebel t2i. about to go study in New Zealand (a lot of video scenic shoots). In your blog it says not even to bother with the Kit Lens? I should just look into buying a different standard lens? I was looking at the $99 one. will that suffice?
@OneLoveMove for a start - maybe! It's very fast for little money, but it's bad built quality. If you can afford it, get the f/1.4 Canon instead, it will last you much longer as it's much better built.
@OneLoveMove If you are fine with a fixed focal length for a start, this sure is the way to go. I'd also look at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 which becomes more like a standard lens with the 1.6x increase in focal length due to the APS-C sensor. Both are linked on my blog in the post about lenses.
Is it hard to create footage with this quality? I've been wanting to buy something like this for some time now, and the Canon 550D is VERY afforable...
I've just bought the 550D + 50mm 1.4 USM, but the hardest part is the pan and tilt. How do you do that? I have a manfrotto tripod but what "head" do you use?
@michelle1920 Steadicam Merlin? Not at all - do you see any shots with camera motion in this video? I was just static, much of it handheld. Of course, only manual focussing while shooting (see my comment below).
@michelle1920 Global focus? Never heard of that term. If you want to have everything in focus you need to have enough light in order to be able to close the aperture down. But really - if you want to achieve this, you're better off with a small camcorder. Check my new blog entry on aperture and shallow depth of field.
@mozzaldinho I was only using the manual focus. Autofocus is not an option for professional work. Firstly, the autofocus of these cameras is made for still photography. It only works when pressing a button and it focuses only once and very fast - not usable for video really. Secondly, using autofocus is out of the question for professional work anyway. Shooting movie-style means selective focus as well - you can only do that manually.
ok its cool work on shots and editing but in canon 550d rolling shutter effect seems to be really irritating and canon aesthetics look so grayish and pale, colour relations aren too good too, its bit "plasticy"
@gezmark rolling shutter is extreme with all CMOS based cameras - which is almost all video cameras nowadays. You can reduce the effect though.
The colours aren't pale, it's just the ungraded version of the video which is best to work with in post-production - check out the graded version to see popping colours.
Hey Check out the video on thecamerastoreTV channel. They did a nice job, really shows what the average joe can do with one of these cameras, I'm definitely looking at getting one!
I have looked at other videos, and they show a constant Moiree effect on thin lines on the background. I have seen the cathedral on your video, and it is CLEAN! How did you avoid the moiree??
@dieeser It's unfortunately there if you look very closely. E.g. look at the glasses of the guy at 0:23. Some of the original footage of the old man at 2:26 had the same problem (pattern of his clothing), but I didn't include it in the edit for that very reason.
Great film, what program did you use to edit, Final Cut, because I think thats what I see. Keep up the great work and keep using that amazing quality.
i know most of the professional photographers have couple of lenses, but i wanna have a lens which is perfect for filming + taking pictures without changing the lenses....
in other word if i get sigma 18-200 instead of canon18-55 mm is ?!
Thx Nino for the awesome blog its really helpful... but for me still is kinda confusing to choose the proper lens for Canon 550D for perfect Picture and perfect movie... even though i'm not professional.
Hey Sara - you can always wait for something better, but then you will never get anything! I was so excited when I shot this film with a test unit of the 550D, because it gave me the exact same quality of images as the 7D. So I abandoned the idea of getting a 7D and ordered the 550D instead! I think the money is well worth it. Don't forget it also leaves you more money for good lenses, which is just as important as the camera itself, maybe even more important.
Very nice video. I was wondering if the shallow DOF will make it hard to use this camera as an amateur? Can the video-function be used easily for everyday life or is it just intended for professional use? It seems that focusing will be much more demanding than on a dedicated camcorder. Or is it not that difficult?
Let me put it this way: It's not your ordinary amateur camcorder. There is no proper auto focus function and you need to be very diligent with focusing. However, if you are willing to invest the time, your results will be so much better as you can see from all the samples floating around. Check out my blog (link on the right) to find out more about how DoF works.
I'm wondering in terms of absolute sharpness of the video imagine if the 550D is quite as good as the 7D? It could be that the 7D footage that I have been seeing is recorded with top of the range lenses. I don't know.
I do like the almost filmic quality. A very nice piece of work - bravo!
Yes, I definitely think it's on par with the 7D regarding absolute sharpness. But the 7D itself isn't particularly sharp to be honest. Check out the review on my blog (link on the right) where I talk about this a bit more. Actually, this even adds a bit to the filmic quality.
I waited so long for the 7D to come out, having seen an apparent leaked spec, and though sharp it didn't look razor sharp. The 550D, from the youtubes that I have seen, look less sharp, even using a prime. I don't know where to go from here. Wait on Nikon and Panasonic? Want it for making short films.
Good to see the color graded version. It's a haunting piece, great stuff.
Yes, both the 7D and 550D aren't razor sharp. But I think it doesn't really matter at this price point. I wouldn't expect to get a real Full HD camera for $800. Also, I find it very hard focussing with the 5Dmk2 (which is sharper, but still not as sharp as a real 1080p camcorder like my EX3).
thenino, would it be possible to see some side-by-side footage using the 5D, EX3 and 550D? I think it would be very helpful to many.
I have been trawling my way through HD footage on Youtube and have been impressed by the Panasonic GH1. Fine details like hairs seem sharply resolved but the images are a little flatter and grainier than the Canons. Apparently the GH2 comes out in September. People are urging me to look at the Olympus Pen 2.
Well, I just bought one, and I've got to say, it's either just as good, or pretty darn close to the 7D's image quality, especially in low lighting conditions. I had a T1i before this, and I could barely use ISO 1600 because of the amount of noise it created. This one at ISO 3200, it's still relatively clear, and the noise looks more like film noise rather than digital noise (that's a good thing). I've tried many other cameras, and price wise, this is a winner for me! (Wish I could afford 5dmkII)

Or is it not that difficult?

@dw6600
Let me put it this way: It's not your ordinary amateur camcorder. There is no proper auto focus function and you need to be very diligent with focusing. However, if you are willing to invest the time, your results will be so much better as you can see from all the samples floating around. Check out my blog (link on the right) to find out more about how DoF works.

does anyone know if this camera has an audio level meter?

No, it unfortunately doesn't. I hope they will add one in the future.

Thanks, glad you like it!

Yes, but -! Splutter! Sulk! I WANT a full HD camera for... well, actually it's a lot more expensive for the 550D in the UK but -
Can I at least - and not to sound desperate, here -come over there and embrace your EX3 and make little coo-ing sounds?

thenino, would it be possible to see some side-by-side footage using the 5D, EX3 and 550D? I think it would be very helpful to many.
I have been trawling my way through HD footage on Youtube and have been impressed by the Panasonic GH1. Fine details like hairs seem sharply resolved but the images are a little flatter and grainier than the Canons. Apparently the GH2 comes out in September. People are urging me to look at the Olympus Pen 2.

Sorry, don't have a 5Dmk2, and my EX3 is currently being repaired! Sony's firmware upgrade screwed the camera ...
