One played by the person on the table behind the actor is called Mrudanga and the other one played by the person located on the left hand side of the stage is called Chande. These are traditional musical instruments played by great artists in Karnataka State (India).
What does "pettige" mean? Is it like a shruti box? (That's what we call in America the one that just makes a drone but doesn't have keys for the melody.)
That's right. "pettige" does mean a box and it does only drone and has no keys. It is a shruti box. I have heard in the past they used some 'shruti burude' but not sure what it was and how it looked like. The shruti pettige replaced that burude. Current Bhagavata's (the singer on the Yakshagana stage) use the electronic boxes.
Great Bhagavathike by Kolagi.. hats off. only one bhagavatha to sing in traditional way. Beautiful voice...

This is class 1 performance. See from 1.10 on how Chittani enacts entire padya so quickly, spontaneously and amazingly. Unbelievable.

That's great, thank you. I guess in the middle of the platform is a harmonium, and on the right is some kind of small cymbals (karatalas)?
dbadagna 3 years ago
Yes, that is correct.
Thanks & Regards,

It is not harmonium, it is Shruti-pettige.

Thank you, I like Tanjore tanpura best of all, but one sees it so rarely these days. (I usually like the most traditional things.)
