What size world did you try it on? If it is a medium or large world, the slightest angle on the shot fired will mess you up. The bullet will hit the island and rebound either in front of you or behind you, causing you to search in the wrong place. A SMALL world is your best bet.

If you use meteor shot and shoot streight up, you can detect a sky island if the meteor shot bounces back to the ground. Also the gold on the ground thing.
