For my money, Dylan would never admit it but so many of his songs seem to have been written for Joan's voice. But then he denied lots of things... other people's lyrics that sneaked into his songs...he never felt any of the folk stuff he wrote (his words)... who knows?
In recent rews america is the great satan. people, not a people, without a father. Who deny the divinty of Jesus Christ.. And kings should have power over their people, the power of life and death. Man has been seperated from his will, only evil will follow.
9/11 On the planes its like a vision of the comming damnaton of man. You look around afraid to act, who is your brother, what is your cause? Dont you know the unworthy have the reigns. God is not in the sky. God is by my fell hand. Law to everyman! If he dare to act. What is the centre of this great kaos, is see galahad, a winged horse, decends upon jerusalem.
@mcgroob3r Also try, "Diamonds and Rust," which is on UTUBE and she wrote. Her songs tend to be understated gems. There are quite a few more that she wrote that are not on UTUBE, but are in her albums. One of my favorites is "Outside the Nashville City Limits," about a farmer and his love for the land and how it touched her.
@mcgroob3r Baez has written a very large number of beautiful songs. She became famous interpreting very old folk songs, but has done some wonderful writing. I would recommend "Sweet Sir Galahad" as my favorite of hers that is on Utube. It's a song about her sister Mimi's boyfriend after the accidental death of her husband. Very beautiful song. But, in all honesty, if she never wrote a song of her own, Joan Baez would still be a national treasure.
This is a fine performance by Joan but the lyrics really don't make much sense. Nevertheless its a good song I like it a lot and have listened to it many times on my big stereo- an old Pioneer SX-1050 amplifier driving 2 ancient BIC Venturi speakers and it sounds great! Bob Dylan (AKA: Robert Zimmerman) was great song writer. He was from some hellhole town in Minnesota, escaped and never went back. I hunt deer every fall near there and boy is it cold!!
@40warhawkp Wow!! Is Bob Dylan's real name Zimmerman? I bet not many people knew that. He'll be over the moon to learn that you consider him a great songwriter. Thanks also for letting us know about your exquisite big stereo. Remember to wrap up nice and warm when you're out murdering innocent animals - here's hoping the deer get their own back one day.
It wasn't my intent to offend anyone with my comment but I see you were. Your response was unnecessarily rude, nasty and sarcastic. I suppose my reference to hunting is what you disliked the most. Too bad. You have exposed yourself as the nasty, mean hateful little liberal leftist bitch that you are. Go to hell.
@purplepelican69 right on! Working class can be liberal or,,,,,not. I am kind of,... a wee bit.... middle of the road. We dont get what we truly need and deserve and most liberals are all TALK. You can be a peaceful loving person and still be workin class but,,,,,,,,sometimes,......I just dont know.......I work so hard for what I have and people who sit in their asses and spend my tax dollars never have to worry about where their next meal comes from. I dunno....sucks.
@purplepelican69 ...and.....i didnt mean to get into your political thing here. This song is not for that. But....times are really bad and most people are fkn clueless as to how bad they are......ya work..you have little....you sit on yr ass..you smile all day. FACT!!!! I know too many people who dont have to work and too mnay who try to make it. God help us. I wont make it to retirement., I know that. I truly know that.
Dylan Song Theory No. 72 Maybe this was Dylan's farewell, as he was about to get out of the limelight. The world is crazy," the crosseyed pirate sits perched in the sun, shooting tin cans with a sawed off shotgun; and the neighbors cheer with each blast;" and "the sky in trembling, and I must leave."
I heard the song for the first time sang by Nana Mouskouri in french (it's called Adieu Angelina) and I am surprised to hear how much their voices are alike and divine *o*
yet I am ashamed to say that as much in english then translated I don't understand the theme of this song and the lyrics only confuse me <_<'''
Had the thrill of seeing them both a couple months ago in my fair city (not together). As an aside, you notice the great picture of Joan sitting in a tree; when Michael Jackson did that, they labeled it arrested development. Idiots.
@lustre5 thank you!...i got sick of people picking on the most normal things michael jackson did and calling it retarted...jeez!...he was an artist unlike any other...bless him...and this song is magic...
Dylan's artistry has always been his words; Baez her incredible voice. The two together were always magical. For me, Joan picked her songs to sing like she would pick a beloved friend. When she sang the poetry of Bob Dylan, you could truly feel and understand the awesome power of what he had to say. Quite simply, two incredible artists!
This song is sheer poetry--away above politics. In fact, it shows the futility of politics and how we can only try to flee from the political people who cause the troubles. Dylan wrote Farewell Angelina in the sixties. It seems he was almost a prophet as much as a poet.
I agree, I would say the best English version, see " Nana Mouskouri - Adieu Angélina 1967 " ( with marvellous guitarists and perfect translation of Dylan's lyrics ) English song, sang in French by a Greek ! see the result...
Also, there's a superbly sublime Swedish version; "Adjö, Angelina" by Mikael Wiehe and Ebba Forsberg.
Ebba Forsberg sings it very differently compared to Baez or Moskouri, though, and Wiehe's translation only follows the original very loosely in spirit. It sounds better if you understand Swedish, of course, but even if you don't, it should still be possible to get a sense of how an intense, mellowing piece of music and song this is in all its simpleness.
@Alpesedelweiss. That was part of my point. Bob Dylan may be the best songwriter of his generation second only to Leonard Cohen, but his own voice and music doesn't always do justice to those songs. Joan Baez' interpretation of 'Farewell Angelina' is one good example of this, Jimi Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower' another - the list is long.
I recently heard Judas Priest's cover of 'Daimonds And Rust'. It was good, but nowhere near Joan Baez' own version.
you hardly know what Dylan meant, but listening to these soul-string-tearing vocals of her you may understand. What the hack is it with those machine-guns and other shit all over (Time bombs ecc.???)
If only poets of evry country, every siécle had voices like her! Ever listened to her "Waltzing Mathilda", you 'll die faster - just to love it. Creeping.
Die Mutter der Betulichkeit, und dennoch kann ich nicht mit ihr aufhören. Welch eine Stimme! Neben Oum Khalsoum und Salamat Sadikova meine Stimme des Jahrhunderts. Can#t stop loving her!
@jerryhello100 Dylan's versions of his own songs can be great, but Joan Baez adds the dimension of a truly great vocal talent to them. Though Phil Ochs and Donovan both had better voices than Dylan, Joan's is still far superior to theirs and she adds that dimension to their songs as well. Most of all, though, IMHO, Joan shines as an interpreter of the very old folk tunes that came down from Europe and many through Appalachia to the present day.. Those are her masterpieces.
been to a concert of her two years ago and she just sounds like when she was so young. Really amazing. It was a great location and the acoustic was just wow. Been shivering all over my body!
