There is a good chapter about salamanders in the excellent book, " The ancestor's Tale " by Richard Dawkins. He talks about how the salamanders of The Central Valley, California are a Ring species. There is hybridization all round the ring, except where the two ends of the line meet, in the far south of California. For more about Ring species try wikipedia
What a splendid animal. It's a crying shame that this, and so many others are critically endangered or entirely wiped out because...Well, we all know why.
Laws generally do nothing to save habitat. Also as long as they are in high demand as food they will be rare. Commercial farms need to become more successful in producing them for food and set a percentage aside for reintroduction to the wild. This model has been used successfully in several countries with crocodilians.
It's not quite THAT old, but they are known from the fossil record to have existed for about 20 million years much like that. So it is still pretty prehistoric.
Now the Permian though (pre-dinosaur age.) that had some HUGE amphibians, that would make this one look like a cute little guy. (And these can grow human-sized!)
i know how to sort these out, just pull out your wand and say 'Aqua eruptooo!'

@twistedted actually not really, Hanzaki is the Japanese subspecies, this is the Chinese variant,
essentially these are a bit larger, live in more temperate regions, and are much rarer
