Shells are in a way, bullets. Anyway, to your question, the larger the size (12mm or 10 mm or 4 pounder) the further the shell would go, usually. So the smaller the shell size, the shorter range it has. Thus, it means that, since the rounds they are firing are smaller shells, it means that the Russians are nearer.
