The reason to have so many brake areas is so they can run a lot of cars. If they only had 1 brake area (block brake), they would probably only be able to run about 3 with 2 of them having to stay in the station until 1 of them got to that 1 brake area.

When it breaks down, the cars have to stop somewhere, and crashing into each other isn't a good idea with so many cars on the track. Batman, Shockwave are only running one train, and this ride needs a lot more trains.

If I remember correctly, this ride was moved from Magic Mountain in California to its new location now. It was called the Sarajevo Bobsleds, after the event in the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics.
