I'm all for Lendl going after McEnroe. It's hardest for your opponent to return a shot when it's coming directly at them. It's not against the rules to go after your opponent. People say bad sportsmanship but sportsmanship is stupid. Sportsmanship won't win you any matches. You play to win the game. If you want to try to hurt your opponent then go ahead as long as you achieve it in a legal fashion which Lendl did. Don't be mad if someone goes after you though, you dish it then you can take it.

The point is to put the ball where your opponent can't return it. Nothing malicious about it. It's just good tennis. Lendl was a convenient villian because he didn't have the outgoing personality that we've come to expect from tennis players. He and Borg were despised for the same reason, they were both unemotional as they kicked your ass.

Although Lendl's forehand drive at that short range undoubtedly hurt, McEnroe did a nice acting job totally exaggerating how much it hurt. John milked that moment for all it was worth.

I'm all for Lendl going after McEnroe. It's hardest for your opponent to return a shot when it's coming directly at them. It's not against the rules to go after your opponent. People say bad sportsmanship but sportsmanship is stupid. Sportsmanship won't win you any matches. You play to win the game. If you want to try to hurt your opponent then go ahead as long as you achieve it in a legal fashion which Lendl did. Don't be mad if someone goes after you though, you dish it then you can take it.

The point is to put the ball where your opponent can't return it. Nothing malicious about it. It's just good tennis. Lendl was a convenient villian because he didn't have the outgoing personality that we've come to expect from tennis players. He and Borg were despised for the same reason, they were both unemotional as they kicked your ass.

McEnroe and Lendl certainly had some gruelling encounters in their day with the latter regularly adopting aggressive tactics to achieve superiority. The clever way Lendl utilised his power game from the back of the court neutralized McEnroe’s finesse at the net. Unnerving one’s opponent by taking them out of their comfort zone is truly beneficial in gaining a physiological advantage. What a compellingly tempestuous rivalry between 2 legends of the game of tennis!

The guy's a pathetic chump too long protected by a national media that supports American 'champions' no matter their shortcomings. Oh please, McEnroe was a con artist who over the course of his career repeatedly demonstrated that any behavior -- from baiting chair umpires to cursing fans to interfering with his opponent's routine -- was ok if it kept him in a match. He was not above tagging Lendl earlier in their rivalry until Lendl decided to retaliate, and he, unlike McEnroe, could bring the pain . . .
