How many years would it take to speak Chinese? Also I guess you learn our alphabet in like 1 hour, given that there are thousands of symbols for every single thing in the chinese alphabet.

@JohnBlack666id It depends a lot on your exposure and effort. Even if you're living in China, is you're speaking mostly English, it isn't going to help. If you're, say, living in my basement and only allowed to speak Chinese when you need something - like... food... or the duct tape to be loosened, you learn much more quickly. Using tricks with the text is helpful to learn, but you can learn the characters separately from the spoken language.

@iamxiaoli Yes I observe that symbols are composed, I mean you use different combinations of symbols to form different words, I also observe you're just a little bit crazy, I like that. I had the opportunity to study in Italy for 1 year, it took me 4 months to learn the language. How about the grammar? In english you have a subject + verb + adjective, how is it in chinese? Also I respect the Chinese people for their discipline, wisdom, tradition, far superior to my people.

@JohnBlack666id I think there are lots of different kinds of people everywhere you go. Maybe most surprising is the similarity of the variety. :) Not enough characters allowed to talk in detail about grammar here. I think what is a hurdle for many new speakers is the five tones and how important using the tones are as well as that to really understand a word, it must be used in context because we use fewer sounds. I hope I can teach a whole course one day.
