Very impressive. It reminds me of the lahars generated by the Mount St Helens eruption on 18 May 1980, though they were much bigger, much more destructive and were caused by an eruption on the day. It would have been interesting to be in the hazards monitoring team tracking the progress of this event. How long after the event started did you find out that the dam had broken?
Lahar is a mix of water with volcanic material. Virtually a flowing cement . The volcanic material's size range from fine ash to rocks as huge as car or even larger.
It's actually part of the Tangiwai Rail Disaster memorial. A lahar from Mt Ruapehu wiped out part of the rail bridge you see in the video minutes before an overnight express train was to cross on Christmas Eve 1953. 151 people died.
that really freakin impressive, ive only seen the birds eye view ruapehu lahar until now, this wows me. this is the video people should be watching, so powerful
One person died in that by drowning in that lahar...
Next day, he came back as a ghost and pressed the dislike button!

A very impressive demonstration of the power of these things.
I do just remember the Tangiwai disaster; it happened while the Queen was visiting NZ.

Amazing. Look for the bus stop at 6:00. I wonder if the bus ended up late?
