I've decided to dj as a hobby. I looked into this product all day and it just fascinated me! It came in the mail just yesterday. I played around with it in Mixxx and it was really enjoyable. I plan to take this hobby one step further and get a better DJ program, like Traktor Duo. But, seeing as the Stanton scs3d has a USB interface, what hardware and how would I connect this unit so that I may preview a mix, sample, etc through my headphones without putting it through the master? Thanks.
@BassSeekr Any off the shelf USB audio interface with 2 stereo outputs should be good to go. Behringer has a couple cheap interfaces that will do the trick for next to nothing. Native instruments also has the Audio DJ 2 interface, which is solid and east to carry.
@nem0nic Thanks! The setup is simpler than I thought. So basically: Scs3d to Laptop to USB Audio interface to Headphones + Speakers But how does one switch between the headphones for previews and the master with the audio interface? (i.e how does it work?) Thanks again!
But if one of my two USB ports is for a Serato mixer and the other is for an external drive, how can DaScratch figure in? Most laptops have only two ports!
you can get external USB hubs that allow you to have more than 2 USB ports. Or if you went with the Stanton SCS.3M Mixer, it uses 1 USB port while providing 4 others, acting as a small hub of sorts.
I'm a newb who'd like to learn how to be a DJ. Is this a good alternative to a turntable? It's a heck of a lot cheaper. (:
And is this product good for beginners? I'd like some equipment that's inexpensive, easy to use, but good enough to take to gigs if I ever get into that.
I'd prefer to use a PC to play, but I'm open to any suggestions!
As SCSystem says, you can't "scratch" in Ableton out of the box, but there's plenty of plugins that you can use this to that effect. As the DaScratch uses Bome, you've really just got a cheap interface to map however you see fit. One thing you can do instantly in Ableton is use the unit to change the Start and End points of samples (Drum Racks, Sampler, Impulse) in real time. A lot of potential in that regards.
So you can essentially hook up a lot of the center touchpad stuff to any sorts of effects in software, right? Like, it's possible to hook it up to all sorts of vsts and software effects and the like?
You can use the controller as an effects trigger be they VST or built in effects as long as the program allows Midi mapping to that area of the program.
In some cases, you can use one or two 3ds without a mixer and mix using the "upfaders" (the gain controls). Some people won't like working like this, though, so a mixer would be good in that case. It all depends on your style of mixing.
but like..if i hooked 1 up to virtual dj, i would be able to mix using like the mixer on the program instead of a real one. and i could use one virutal deck and one on the 3d.
y u no ... sorry, i would love to have more lights on it, like, Launchpad is totally spoiled me, now i need more lights on devices...

Personally this is crap, I'd rather have the feeling of actually using Actual turntable and feel the record playing

In that case, you would need to get a powered hub. The SCS.3m controller has a 4 port powered hub built into it for example.

DaScratch controller and a USB Mixer will be sick if you use it together!

Could you use this thing to scratch in ableton? Because if so, I'd defnitely snag one.
SonidoDelX 2 years ago
As of now Ableton does not offer waveform control. They would need to implement that feature and also make it MIDI mapable.
