probably a stupid question, but, if the limbs on that recurve were to break or split, would it be possible to get new limbs for it or would the entire bow have to be replaced since there's no allen screws holding the limbs in? sorry if its a stupid question, I've never owned a recurve before so I wouldn't know.
For one thing Hickok, I love your archery stuff, always loves traditional bows :D and for another, and please don't think me an internet know it all, but how heavy is the draw on that bow? Because locking your elbow generally isn't good idea but it does make it easier. Plus you have a bracer so to each his own, 5/5 stars!
Modest and concise, doesn't act like a know it all (as many do). Teaches a few basics looses some arrows and explains the traditional approach. Great videos.
I have a very early compound bow that I inherited from my grandpa, it shoots with about 50 pd. and it is alot like shooting a traditional bow because 1 i dont know how the hell the sights work, and since I'm very young the draw goes all the way to the back of my head, and hickok can you do a video on your compound bow
I love the irony when he says 'anyone who is gullible enough, that is not a real dear' then he says 'I don't think a dear would stand like that if it got shot' haha
A bow is one of the best ranged weapons for z-day, dear hickok45. It's powerful, silent, and has reusable ammunition! The only downsides are .. Your fingers are going to hurt, haha :)
I got myself a #60 composite bow just today, after many years of not shooting sticks at straw.
Crap! I accidentally disliked this video! I didn't mean to and I'm sorry! After I realized what I'd done I instantly liked it! Shoot, oh well, another amazing video hickok.
I noticed you hold the bow in your left arm and pull the string with your right arm, now does that make your bow a "right handed bow" or a "left handed bow"? Because when I do an "air bow" I feel that holding the bow in the right arm feels more natural to me. Witch one should I get left or right? Thanks, nice video!
ive only been into making and shooting bows for the past 6 months and ive just noticed that everyone ive seen on these vids holds the bow in there left hand ,and pulls the string with the right, ive been doing the total opposite.are all archers left handed or something?i just dont feel right with the bow in my left hand,

Is this a good deal? Maybe you don't lose arrows anymore. But saw the email and remembered you said losing arrows common when starting out. Ignore/Delete if necessary.
Yo, I don't know very much about archery, I was just wondering can you shoot a longbow from any other position other than standing? Also, like in the films (I know), is it possible to fire a longbow, rotated, for example on a diagonal line, or horizontal, or does this just never happen? And finally, what sort of range can you get from a 'straight shot' (what I call it)? As in not aiming upwards like you see a bunch of Elves in LOTR doing. Thanks.
I just picked up my first recurve longbow today. Its a Shakespeare Root. Not a super high quality, but Its really fun to shoot. I have a few Easton 1916 arrows. And ive been able to hit a target at 75-100 feet. Not too good, but i havnt shot a bow in about 7 years (Bear 25lb compound training bow)
@Tweak54 It is a bow whose limbs have recurve to them. The rule book for some competitions, in order to simplify determining whether a bow is a longbow or not, and to not eliminate some of the newer bows coming out, latched onto the idea that a bow where the string does not touch the limbs other than at the nock where the sting is attatched, is a longbow. This has obviously made nonsense out of the longbow concept. That is US shooting sports, never hold back from letting the tech go nuts.
@Tweak54 i did and just cause there curved just a slight little bit like 2 inches does not make ir=t a recurve bow its a long bow recurve bows are much shorter than that and next time dont post a comment like that unless you know wat your talking about k
I know nothing about bows. So a recurve bow as a little more power than a longbow? And a compound bow has a little more power than a recurve bow. Is that correct?
@MMAlpha7 Longbow and recurve, are nearly the same in "power" these days. Compound is a whole other thing. The max velocity in recurves is > 200fps, the max in compounds is > 350fps. Comparing the physical difficulty of shooting the various types is hard because they are often shot in very different ways. With the compound you only hold 20% of the max weight, but you can hold it a lot longer before you get the shot off. Most people find a compound easier to shoot.
Thats not a longbow - longbows are bigger - made of yew and have no rests.
But look at those arrows - they are beautifully made - actually so is the bow - both really beautiful and obviously very good. But it aint no longbow.....
@BigGeorgieC, Sorry to inform you, but it IS a type of longbow, just not the type you want it to be. It's a Hybrid Longbow. Every bow referred to as a "longbow" is not something carved out of a chunk of wood with somebody's pocketknife. :-)
@hickok45 It is a longbow . You could call it a reflex /deflex laminated longbow .Some call that type of bow an American flatbow. The old English standard is minimum 5 foot 6 inches (167,64cm) for longbows with drawlenghts of 26" or more.
@BigGeorgieC I agree it isn't a longbow. But it is far too restrictive to say a longbow has no rest and is made of yew. That would be like saying a rifle always has a matchlock, and is made of iron. A longbow should look mostly like a longbow, and it should have a design where the bow length is in the order of 2.2+ x the length of the arrow or would stack if shorter. With that rule you are close, but since nobody would agree, or stick to the spirit, we are where we are.
@BigGeorgieC The name longbow isn't overly literal. It moreso describes the shape of the bow, where the bow has a standard general arc, and the string doesn't touch the limbs. His is a reflex-deflex longbow, where the limbs reflex up near the tips like a recurve but without the string touching the limb. Depended on how the limbs are shaped a longbow style bow is also called a flatbow or selfbow, if it is one piece of wood.
May sound odd, but where do you look at the arrow? Obviously you can't have the arrow directly infront of your eye, so you have to accomedate. How would you do it?
You may have already been told this, but 20 yards or 20 meters is optimal range for traditional archery. That's the killzone that was used by English bowmen against French knights during the 100 Years War. So, I don't know how many people would shoot farther than that, but 20 yards is fine.
How do you think a longbow or recurve would do in your zombie training?
Whatttt?!! 20m -no English bowmen really shot wayy further than that.... Go and see the archers at Warwick Castle - they even had bowmen snipers back then - Still, back then a direct kill wasnt a priority - in fact maiming was better cause it caused more issues for the enemy troops.
Way to go traditional! What arrow shaft material do you prefer? I love making my own from sitka spruce or pine, not a big fan of carbon, always seem to go back to aluminum for 3D shoots and the like
This is the 1st time I have seen your video and I I have to say you do a good job showing beginners how to start shooting. I have been raised with with archery as I have witnessed so many people here have. My favorite sport bar none, archery. I shoot a Joe Bouchard Recurve Takedown at 55 lbs. Great Bow from Michigan. Thank you for a good video I look forward to viewing your others...Bernie
hey man. I want to start archering and i want to know what's the right bow for me because when i was looking at the bows online it let you choose the lenght and weight for example "RH 68' 40LB".. Well i,m 5'11.. help me out on this.
Greg, whats your opinion on hunting with a bow. I've just watched a video on it and it seems to cause unnesessary suffering for the hogs that were featured. I'm not antihunting far from it. But I believe that an animal should be dispatched as quickly as possible with as little pain as possible. These hogs needed three or more arrows to take them down and that on top of the dogs ripping away at their ears. I found it pretty horrific.
Very true of a pure wood bow but a well made all wooden bow will shoot for a long, long time. Even hundreds of years. The reason you don't see them any more is because you get absolute results with laminated bows every time. I think it takes supreme skills to make a good one.
(THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO MY LAST COMMENT) just figured I would let you know that, and say that the reason why I suggest against wooden arrows, is because in my shooting I have found that they get fractures (Stress Fractures) and will eventualy explode when you shoot them... I do not mean these comments as anything insultive, though I do notice that it is sounding as such, I only mean this as a heads up. :) nice video by the way! Sincerely- Brownnz.
umm, may I just say no? you CAN shoot wooden arrows, it's not that you SHOULD, I have been shooting since I was 3 years old, and I can honestly say that Carbon is my personal favorite, just because I have only broken three (by missing the target and hitting rocks and such) I have been shooting compounds more then longbows/recurves, though I have shot all three. (thats my credentials, just figured I would share them) so you dont have to use wood, infact I suggest against it. Sincerely- Brownnz.
LOL at first i thought the dog was a fake target animal and was thinking "woah, must bee some pretty messed up target desingers" and then it moved and i laughed.
Notch your arrow pointing down. Just a little pull is enough to send it to someone's eye. Of course, you might have been alone there with your camera. It is good practice to always do it this way to avoid accident.
@newtubetubetube , I do it the way I do it in the video. Always point down range, as with a gun. If there are people in front of you , you should not be loading up an arrow. :-)
Haha lose those arrows by missing the deer and it looks like it'll be a pain to find them from there. And arrows are expensive too, especially if your graphite ones break. Here it's like a 12 dollar arrow good-bye... well a few bucks less saying I keep the steel tips. I have a compound and currently I'm making a bow I think you should as well, it's very informative and fun.
Thanky you for the demo! I had looked for a while before I found your video, and I must say it was very educational and perfect for what I needed. Thank you !
I LOVE THIS!!! This is exactly the kind of archery I've been wanting to get into! Thanks for posting and your presentation. You have a very natural way of talking that seems personable and easy to follow. You would be a great instructor!
Now...I ask all you longbowmen..is there a longbow that draws smoothly without stacking or just stopping to 29 1/2"???...if so..please let me know..cause in 40 years of archery..I have yet to find one.....I hear a lot of claims and promises, but no one can fill the bill..all talk and not much action...RR
Thanks Hickok, nice video. Reminds me of the day my dad brought a bow & i then spent 1/2 a day with a machete digging through the undergrowth trying to get all the arrows back.
Dude I am you in 40 years lol. I use to be good with traditional bow but i mainly stick to browning compound bows with no release (i hate em). I've taken home two trophies with my Trusty Browning : ).
You've been shooting 8 years and are still "kind of new"?! That means I have a long way to go! My only question is that my arrows have 3 pieces of feather fletching, 2 colors. Does the odd color fletch go up or down when the arrow is sitting on the shelf?
probably a stupid question, but, if the limbs on that recurve were to break or split, would it be possible to get new limbs for it or would the entire bow have to be replaced since there's no allen screws holding the limbs in? sorry if its a stupid question, I've never owned a recurve before so I wouldn't know.

Thank you for this video, I have been watching your videos. I think this will help me in my Archery skills.

Wow 0_0 , Amazing my friend. you don't use stabilizer and dot sight for shooting like that? you awesome !!
t3t5uj1 8 months ago
Very true of a pure wood bow but a well made all wooden bow will shoot for a long, long time. Even hundreds of years. The reason you don't see them any more is because you get absolute results with laminated bows every time. I think it takes supreme skills to make a good one.

hey hickock wat do you think of a pse legacy (goes for anyone btw)?

i shoot an Olympic recurve, but i would love to own a traditional bow :)
bajesus666 8 months ago
(THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO MY LAST COMMENT) just figured I would let you know that, and say that the reason why I suggest against wooden arrows, is because in my shooting I have found that they get fractures (Stress Fractures) and will eventualy explode when you shoot them... I do not mean these comments as anything insultive, though I do notice that it is sounding as such, I only mean this as a heads up. :) nice video by the way! Sincerely- Brownnz.
Brownnz92TNPfan 9 months ago
umm, may I just say no? you CAN shoot wooden arrows, it's not that you SHOULD, I have been shooting since I was 3 years old, and I can honestly say that Carbon is my personal favorite, just because I have only broken three (by missing the target and hitting rocks and such) I have been shooting compounds more then longbows/recurves, though I have shot all three. (thats my credentials, just figured I would share them) so you dont have to use wood, infact I suggest against it. Sincerely- Brownnz.

how much was your bow ?
coolstnrdevr 9 months ago
Notch your arrow pointing down. Just a little pull is enough to send it to someone's eye. Of course, you might have been alone there with your camera. It is good practice to always do it this way to avoid accident.
newtubetubetube 10 months ago
@newtubetubetube , I do it the way I do it in the video. Always point down range, as with a gun. If there are people in front of you , you should not be loading up an arrow. :-)

Thank you for posting this. This is the only video I've found, after much looking, about archery with a traditional bow.
