  • probably a stupid question, but, if the limbs on that recurve were to break or split, would it be possible to get new limbs for it or would the entire bow have to be replaced since there's no allen screws holding the limbs in? sorry if its a stupid question, I've never owned a recurve before so I wouldn't know.

  • Isn't that technically a recurve bow?

  • I came here to learn archery and to become interested in it because I'm obsessed with The Hunger Games... hehee js

  • @HARMONYbazaarGIRL11 ha me too...

  • For one thing Hickok, I love your archery stuff, always loves traditional bows :D and for another, and please don't think me an internet know it all, but how heavy is the draw on that bow? Because locking your elbow generally isn't good idea but it does make it easier. Plus you have a bracer so to each his own, 5/5 stars!

  • @DoitforthaLULZ, Anything that enhances my shooting is a "good idea" for me. Other may do as they wish. :-)

  • How do you conceal a thing like that.?

  • @gr1522 you dont

  • Hickok, we want more archery videos :)

  • Modest and concise, doesn't act like a know it all (as many do). Teaches a few basics looses some arrows and explains the traditional approach. Great videos.

  • I have a very early compound bow that I inherited from my grandpa, it shoots with about 50 pd. and it is alot like shooting a traditional bow because 1 i dont know how the hell the sights work, and since I'm very young the draw goes all the way to the back of my head, and hickok can you do a video on your compound bow

  • When i was littile i tried to use a wire hanger and a pencil as a bow and arrow

  • @superdeadhope I have a compound bow.....

  • Why do you have a 50lb bow for target shooting? That will wear you out soon!

  • I love the traditional bow

  • mind your knee

  • thanks for this great video, just got my first bow today and its a longbow, cant wait to try it out

  • compound bows are for pussies. its all about recurve and long bows with no sight

  • I love the irony when he says 'anyone who is gullible enough, that is not a real dear' then he says 'I don't think a dear would stand like that if it got shot' haha

  • you are now on the terrorist watch list for that airplane comment. :)

  • Darn good shooting for a lead slinger! Love the videos, keep up the good work!

  • nice video

  • I'm in an archery class right now, would like to get a longbow. Someone guide me to an affordable longbow.

  • You are the man!

  • Kool video. Ya i spelled kool with a K...

  • When I shot a bow I didn't instinktive shoot. Rather I looked at the tip of the arrow. I know your not "supposed" to do that but it sure helps!

  • A bow is one of the best ranged weapons for z-day, dear hickok45. It's powerful, silent, and has reusable ammunition! The only downsides are .. Your fingers are going to hurt, haha :)

I got myself a #60 composite bow just today, after many years of not shooting sticks at straw.

    With regards,

    A fellow archer

  • That's interesting you only have the silencer on the lower part of the string.

  • Damn planes lol

  • Ginger is so cute . . talk about Ginger - lol . . . My baby pups would be chasing the arrow - lol

  • How much was this hybrid bow?

    Please answer.

  • I only shot 5 arrows ever. And they all missed. They didn't even hit the target board.

  • The deer is not real.

    But the dog is.

    Yay! I'm not gullible!

  • boss-like dog in the back just chilin' while he shoots

  • I used to shoot but then I injured my shoulder by walking into a lamppost... Yeah, don't see that on Skyrim. :P

  • Oh wow. I love that bow....! Where did you get it??

  • i was once able to shoot like that but then i took an arrow to the knee

  • gatdamn thats a nice bow

  • Oh that poor deer! You cruel old ma-oh wait its not real.

  • @TheWorldStrider

    NOPE! chuck telsa

  • Crap! I accidentally disliked this video! I didn't mean to and I'm sorry! After I realized what I'd done I instantly liked it! Shoot, oh well, another amazing video hickok.

  • I noticed you hold the bow in your left arm and pull the string with your right arm, now does that make your bow a "right handed bow" or a "left handed bow"? Because when I do an "air bow" I feel that holding the bow in the right arm feels more natural to me. Witch one should I get left or right? Thanks, nice video!

  • The deer is not real! as if a deer would take 2 arrows n still b standing.

  • Fake deer? NOPE! Just Chuck Testa

  • i used to shoot fake deer with arrows, but then i took an arrow to the knee

  • what's the name of the arrows your using

  • Hickok45, why don't you hunt? :O

  • STUPID DEER ... RRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love how the dog is just chillin behind him.

  • is that deer real? nope chuck testa..

  • @TringleMyPringle haha didn't expect that on this video

  • Don't hunt awwwwwe man . What's up hickok, I figured you for a big hunter.

  • ive only been into making and shooting bows for the past 6 months and ive just noticed that everyone ive seen on these vids holds the bow in there left hand ,and pulls the string with the right, ive been doing the total opposite.are all archers left handed or something?i just dont feel right with the bow in my left hand,

  • tell your dog to be careful

  • whats the draw weight on that bow?

  • your dog is cute :P I like him and i wish i had a bow and arrows like yours ;P

  • Good video, I'm restarting traditional archery after being out of it for 6 or 7 years, nice to see informitive non-technical videos. I needed a refresher. Thanks. = )

  • thanks for making this video man, im just starting out with archery and this video really helped me! Thanks alot for making it!

  • nice, man

  • Man. Newbie here. Those are for crossbows!!!

Sorry, Hickok. Promise to do better next time.

  • Great Video man!

  • That's a very beautiful bow! But you're right, one should shoot wood arrows with such a beauty :)

  • Yo, I don't know very much about archery, I was just wondering can you shoot a longbow from any other position other than standing? Also, like in the films (I know), is it possible to fire a longbow, rotated, for example on a diagonal line, or horizontal, or does this just never happen? And finally, what sort of range can you get from a 'straight shot' (what I call it)? As in not aiming upwards like you see a bunch of Elves in LOTR doing. Thanks.

  • it's a fucking longbow

  • LoL that airplane joke was hilarious xD

  • aww cute dog what breed is that?

  • good video. very informative.

  • Terrific video. Thanks for sharing...

  • hahaha :D gullible ones :D

  • Thank you hickok45 that was great help and their not that expensive just 60 dollars or so

  • Where did you get the arrow pouch and how

    Much please respond

  • @joedog636 , The Belt quiver is called "Dave's Quiver." 3Rivers Archery sells them. They have a website.

  • Whateva kind of bow its...nice shootin!

  • nice video man... good shooting

  • its more of a flatbow than a longbow

  • @MrConcon64 flatbow? wrtong it is more than likely a Recurve Bow

  • I just picked up my first recurve longbow today. Its a Shakespeare Root. Not a super high quality, but Its really fun to shoot. I have a few Easton 1916 arrows. And ive been able to hit a target at 75-100 feet. Not too good, but i havnt shot a bow in about 7 years (Bear 25lb compound training bow)

  • Hickok, I want to see you hit the 80 yard gong with an arrow HAHA. That would be great!

  • Because of you I bought a recurve bow thanks hickok

  • how much did your bow cost...

  • Awsome dog, wouldn't leave you're sight even if a gun fired beside it :O

And that bow was beautifull, I want more archery stuff myself, but I got no place to put up a target ._.

  • what model is that?

  • Love how ginger is just sittin there with arrows flying over her head.

  • Hickok, you're a one-man army like Rambo.

  • I like to bow hunt but i dont have a bow anymore so if i get a new one what type of bow would you suggest?

  • Thats a recurve bow.

  • @Tweak54, It's what's known as a hybrid longbow.

  • @Tweak54 It is a bow whose limbs have recurve to them. The rule book for some competitions, in order to simplify determining whether a bow is a longbow or not, and to not eliminate some of the newer bows coming out, latched onto the idea that a bow where the string does not touch the limbs other than at the nock where the sting is attatched, is a longbow. This has obviously made nonsense out of the longbow concept. That is US shooting sports, never hold back from letting the tech go nuts.

  • @Tweak54 no its not its a long bow the ends arent curved u retard

  • @The41454145 Look again.

  • @Tweak54 i did and just cause there curved just a slight little bit like 2 inches does not make ir=t a recurve bow its a long bow recurve bows are much shorter than that and next time dont post a comment like that unless you know wat your talking about k

  • @Tweak54 actually its known as a flat bow

  • @Tweak54 well really its a reflex-deflx style longbow...

  • Damn your voice is cool! Really reminds me of when I was in Virginia. One of the voices of America :)

Also, thanks for giving me a head start on my Archer, I'm trying to find a place locally

  • I know nothing about bows. So a recurve bow as a little more power than a longbow? And a compound bow has a little more power than a recurve bow. Is that correct?

  • @MMAlpha7 Longbow and recurve, are nearly the same in "power" these days. Compound is a whole other thing. The max velocity in recurves is > 200fps, the max in compounds is > 350fps. Comparing the physical difficulty of shooting the various types is hard because they are often shot in very different ways. With the compound you only hold 20% of the max weight, but you can hold it a lot longer before you get the shot off. Most people find a compound easier to shoot.

  • wow, he is really a marksman

  • Thats not a longbow - longbows are bigger - made of yew and have no rests.

But look at those arrows - they are beautifully made - actually so is the bow - both really beautiful and obviously very good. But it aint no longbow.....

  • @BigGeorgieC, Sorry to inform you, but it IS a type of longbow, just not the type you want it to be. It's a Hybrid Longbow. Every bow referred to as a "longbow" is not something carved out of a chunk of wood with somebody's pocketknife. :-)

  • @hickok45 It is a longbow . You could call it a reflex /deflex laminated longbow .Some call that type of bow an American flatbow. The old English standard is minimum 5 foot 6 inches (167,64cm) for longbows with drawlenghts of 26" or more.

  • @BigGeorgieC I agree it isn't a longbow. But it is far too restrictive to say a longbow has no rest and is made of yew. That would be like saying a rifle always has a matchlock, and is made of iron. A longbow should look mostly like a longbow, and it should have a design where the bow length is in the order of 2.2+ x the length of the arrow or would stack if shorter. With that rule you are close, but since nobody would agree, or stick to the spirit, we are where we are.

  • @BigGeorgieC I think you are talking about an Traditinal English Longbow. This longbow is a bit more...refined.

  • @BigGeorgieC Not all long bows are "self bows" and they are made of various materials.

  • @BigGeorgieC The name longbow isn't overly literal. It moreso describes the shape of the bow, where the bow has a standard general arc, and the string doesn't touch the limbs. His is a reflex-deflex longbow, where the limbs reflex up near the tips like a recurve but without the string touching the limb. Depended on how the limbs are shaped a longbow style bow is also called a flatbow or selfbow, if it is one piece of wood.

  • I use 68 inch 28 pound falco legend. works great.

  • i suck at long bows

  • nvm, lol

  • May sound odd, but where do you look at the arrow? Obviously you can't have the arrow directly infront of your eye, so you have to accomedate. How would you do it?

    (Failed. Still sounds odd).

  • how many pounds lol

  • You may have already been told this, but 20 yards or 20 meters is optimal range for traditional archery. That's the killzone that was used by English bowmen against French knights during the 100 Years War. So, I don't know how many people would shoot farther than that, but 20 yards is fine.

How do you think a longbow or recurve would do in your zombie training?

  • @battletoads22

Whatttt?!! 20m -no English bowmen really shot wayy further than that.... Go and see the archers at Warwick Castle - they even had bowmen snipers back then - Still, back then a direct kill wasnt a priority - in fact maiming was better cause it caused more issues for the enemy troops.

  • Way to go traditional! What arrow shaft material do you prefer? I love making my own from sitka spruce or pine, not a big fan of carbon, always seem to go back to aluminum for 3D shoots and the like

  • Hickok,

This is the 1st time I have seen your video and I I have to say you do a good job showing beginners how to start shooting. I have been raised with with archery as I have witnessed so many people here have. My favorite sport bar none, archery. I shoot a Joe Bouchard Recurve Takedown at 55 lbs. Great Bow from Michigan. Thank you for a good video I look forward to viewing your others...Bernie

  • hey hickok what is a good starter bow?? good vids

  • hey man. I want to start archering and i want to know what's the right bow for me because when i was looking at the bows online it let you choose the lenght and weight for example "RH 68' 40LB".. Well i,m 5'11.. help me out on this.

  • Greg, whats your opinion on hunting with a bow. I've just watched a video on it and it seems to cause unnesessary suffering for the hogs that were featured. I'm not antihunting far from it. But I believe that an animal should be dispatched as quickly as possible with as little pain as possible. These hogs needed three or more arrows to take them down and that on top of the dogs ripping away at their ears. I found it pretty horrific.

  • Thank you for this video, I have been watching your videos. I think this will help me in my Archery skills.

  • what rnt u good at

  • Wow 0_0 , Amazing my friend. you don't use stabilizer and dot sight for shooting like that? you awesome !!

  • Very true of a pure wood bow but a well made all wooden bow will shoot for a long, long time. Even hundreds of years. The reason you don't see them any more is because you get absolute results with laminated bows every time. I think it takes supreme skills to make a good one.

  • hey hickock wat do you think of a pse legacy (goes for anyone btw)?

  • But, is the deer real?

  • i shoot an Olympic recurve, but i would love to own a traditional bow :)

  • (THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO MY LAST COMMENT) just figured I would let you know that, and say that the reason why I suggest against wooden arrows, is because in my shooting I have found that they get fractures (Stress Fractures) and will eventualy explode when you shoot them... I do not mean these comments as anything insultive, though I do notice that it is sounding as such, I only mean this as a heads up. :) nice video by the way! Sincerely- Brownnz.

  • umm, may I just say no? you CAN shoot wooden arrows, it's not that you SHOULD, I have been shooting since I was 3 years old, and I can honestly say that Carbon is my personal favorite, just because I have only broken three (by missing the target and hitting rocks and such) I have been shooting compounds more then longbows/recurves, though I have shot all three. (thats my credentials, just figured I would share them) so you dont have to use wood, infact I suggest against it. Sincerely- Brownnz.

  • You should try bowfishing it's fum

  • LOL at first i thought the dog was a fake target animal and was thinking "woah, must bee some pretty messed up target desingers" and then it moved and i laughed.

  • how much was your bow ?

  • Notch your arrow pointing down. Just a little pull is enough to send it to someone's eye. Of course, you might have been alone there with your camera. It is good practice to always do it this way to avoid accident.

  • @newtubetubetube , I do it the way I do it in the video. Always point down range, as with a gun. If there are people in front of you , you should not be loading up an arrow. :-)

  • Thank you for posting this. This is the only video I've found, after much looking, about archery with a traditional bow.

  • @NJEsperantist if you like this, try checking out bigbowbrum's videos... he does a lot of good videos about english longbows...

  • I do build them and they are called hybrid reflex deflex LONGBOWS. Quiet Superior to the english model.

  • hey ive never shot a longbow but can u tell me: is it very different from a recurve?

  • u are the best hickok

  • god I wish I had all your stuff hickock. :P

  • @PlaidCountry

He's american so it's OK for him to call it a longbow.

  • god i had no clue he was an archer, i love hickock even more now :)

  • Haha lose those arrows by missing the deer and it looks like it'll be a pain to find them from there. And arrows are expensive too, especially if your graphite ones break. Here it's like a 12 dollar arrow good-bye... well a few bucks less saying I keep the steel tips. I have a compound and currently I'm making a bow I think you should as well, it's very informative and fun.

  • Doggy!

  • Do you think you can hit the gong with that thing?

  • Thank you for the great video! It was exactly what I needed to see.

  • Thanky you for the demo! I had looked for a while before I found your video, and I must say it was very educational and perfect for what I needed. Thank you !

  • 3:27 "think i could shoot that airplane down?" better safe than sorry (cough cough)

  • id think you would be a great hunter!! :-)

  • ive seen like all your videos and all i can say is... I WANT TO MEET YOU.

  • look! another dog

    lol :X

  • This is an excellent traditionalbow video.

  • SUPER AWSOMELY INFORMATIVE. Haha. :)

  • I LOVE THIS!!! This is exactly the kind of archery I've been wanting to get into! Thanks for posting and your presentation. You have a very natural way of talking that seems personable and easy to follow. You would be a great instructor!

  • Now...I ask all you longbowmen..is there a longbow that draws smoothly without stacking or just stopping to 29 1/2"???...if so..please let me know..cause in 40 years of archery..I have yet to find one.....I hear a lot of claims and promises, but no one can fill the bill..all talk and not much action...RR

  • Don't Move Ginger!!!!!

  • Holy crap! Thats a humingbird? Last time I checked they were like 800$!!

  • how much pull is your bow?

  • can u do everything?

  • Thanks Hickok, nice video. Reminds me of the day my dad brought a bow & i then spent 1/2 a day with a machete digging through the undergrowth trying to get all the arrows back.

  • Dude I am you in 40 years lol. I use to be good with traditional bow but i mainly stick to browning compound bows with no release (i hate em). I've taken home two trophies with my Trusty Browning : ).

  • Sweet, you're a man of many talents.

  • what awsome about shooting long bows is its fun to shoot and also a good workout routine for your back and arm muscels

  • Hi Hickok, Great seeing you a longbow... Great video nice shooting....

Ben makes some very fine bows... I used one last summer for an archery demo I put on.. Did the job just fine...

Hope to see more archery videos from you..

    >>>-------->

    Cody

  • stop at 2:55 and look at his face it looks like this :O

  • Nice job you made Longbow look fun and relaxing, they way it's supposed to be

  • the dog seems very excited about this whole thing.

  • Bows are badass

  • Is that your backyard? That's a nice one, if so!

  • im gona go buy a longbow while theyre still legal in australia plus you can be any age to shoot a bow i think

  • That's some nice grouping..

  • That bow is beautiful

  • You've been shooting 8 years and are still "kind of new"?! That means I have a long way to go! My only question is that my arrows have 3 pieces of feather fletching, 2 colors. Does the odd color fletch go up or down when the arrow is sitting on the shelf?
