Movies need more alien Plant monsters. I'm tired of zombies and vampires. We got Triffids and Little Shop of Horrors. I say, power to the violent vegetation! Let them burst out of someone's stomach this time.
..wow yeh - The Mad Death ..and a rabid dog in a shopping centre - with a fox somewhere along the line ..all flooding back, the old lady smuggling her cat through customs starts it all ..waffle waffle :) ..
The Triffids were actually genetically modified plants, Wyndham was a great \/isionary. I think the Triffids could hae looked better, and I too had a different ision of them. Great book though.
This image is repeated endlessly in British SF, the menace grows and lives in the ground, in the soil, even if it comes from space. I wonder if it goes back to the days when people believed in an underworld? Menace which lies beneath, rising up...I think Wyndham must've influenced Nigel Kneale, a little.
The English have a peculiar relation to the soil. Perhaps it's because they've lived on it in relative peace and order for so long. Perhaps also because of their lovely climate. But deep inside Englishmen there is or used to be a love of gardening, of the home garden, of well-ordered plots and well-tended orchards. You see it everywhere in their literature, and from what you say, perhaps in their SF too.
yeah, I must admit, modern life tends to cut us off from nature, but when you read Shakespeare, there's an awareness of the seasons, the colors of nature and the natural world that many modern people seem to lack.
i loved this series when i was a kid. but i always thought the civilians where pretty stupid lol. in a way the triffids remind me of the Daleks, potentially conquer the world but cant climb stairs..
I just finished the book. To make a movie of it would be hard. It would require the most serious of treatments, to preserve the book's feeling. Anything they'd make nowadays would be too CG filled to be effective.
reet series, trippy as fuck. but you'd think that the actual blind population would lead the others and things wouldn't be as chaotic as the story depicts. but then again, it IS a story, and a very, very good one at that.5 stars.
the film was absolutely awful, but this is probably one of the best things the BBC produced. It still scares today, not the triffids, just the idea...so much so that i freind i lent the DVD to went out and bought a generator and loads of survival stuff in case there ever is a distopia. He even bought the same landrover Bill uses towards the end of this :-)
The original Triffids was scary when I was a kid, but I doubt it would scare anyone nowadays. They did make an interesting clicking noise when they moved, though.
This "more recent" BBC series looks awesome. I checked IMDB and they don't link to any DVD or videotape version of it.
They did three series' based on his "Chocky" novel, which I have not seen. That said, I think it's fairly obvious that Speilburg blatantly pillaged "Chocky" (a story about a young boy and his friendship with an extra terrestrial) for "E.T.".
Hi haredog62 ...bbc4 on freeview just showed a film they did of one of his books were a scientist gets knocked unconcious and wakes up in a parralel universe...sorry cant remember its title...someone could be kind and post it though ....they are showing this show again also as part of a sci-fi season and I'm sure there was a documentry about Wyndam....
Thanks for uploading. I've never seen this show though I've read the book and seen the film. The book is brilliant of course and the film is ok except for the cheesy ending. I think I must get this on DVD now...
This is soo cool , I remember it from the early 80's on the bbc...very "threads " type drama, it would be so cool if someone posted a video of when all the people go blind in the hospital ...cool show : P

@aureliosjc It is true that even in the book the triffid is not the main plot, rather what it causes others to act like.

Great stuff, no wonder I used to suffer from terrible nightmares when I was a kid (and still do to a lesser degree).
Triffids, Sapphire and Steel, Threads, The Mad Death; TV was dark and I wonder what the hell my parents were thinking sometimes.

This is the first time in 28 years I've seen this.
I was only 7 years old the first time I saw it and still I vividly remember those buggers.
I also seem to recollect a few sleepless nights because of those. :)
