I love the part in the video where you say "what would you play?" when i get it i feel so smart. :) i love your videos because they make the games much more interesting.
beautiful checkmate by Magnus Calson, he has the shades of his great predessecor Bobby Fishcer, i would pee in my pants trying out Qb5-h5+ g4Xh5; Rf4-h4 checkmate, he sees that the knight F2 gets the G1 square!
@ProShoooter the chessmetrics system is worth a look, places Fischer on top (2895) Kasparov second (2886) Just search 'chessbase chessmetrics top ten'; whatever yr opinion i'm sure you'll find it of as much interest as i have. I haven't studied all of the world champions yet, started just a few months ago w/ Morphy (ok, not a WC) and Steinitz but haven't reached Fischer, have kind of already 'studied' Kasparov tho, but am obviously not in a position yet to make the call. Cheers.
Cool game. I love how the opening seemed irrelevant at first but had a deep meaning to quickly set up the pace. Ludvig got overwhelmed the moment his baiting failed after 9. dxe5
@Plzdontattack I'm sorry? You're saying the World #1 sucks at chess? Yet he's the best player on the planet... So, if he sucks then that means (as you're far, far worse than him) that you're far, far worse than sucking... Yeah, great logic there..
@Dysanfel23 It depends on how you see it. A combination of four moves each isn't really that special. Also, it's a very common, well-known motive, so it's easy to calculate towards the combination with Ne2. No doubt, Mr Hammer also saw it coming, but was nice enough to let Carlsen finish the combination, which of course is still nice.
@oldoddjobs No, I am not nearly as good, nor will I ever be close to as good as Carlsen, even if I could study chess for a hundred years. But this game doesn't really show the brilliancy of Carlsen. There are games of him with combinations far deeper, infinitely more brilliant than this one. So I think this game doesn't really answer the question in the title.
@doobydooby223 did you know carlsen was mentored by some guy called garry kasparov? you know, that guy who completely dominated the chess world for 20 years and who is still the highest rated player ever? do you really think practicing against computer programs made as big an impact as being trained by arguably the best player ever? exactly how does computer training teach you to play 10 games of chess simultaneously without looking at the board??
I thought about Qh5 when the question arose in this video, but I didn't look to see that it would even enable check mate, so I thought its a too dangerous move, but in fact it is the best xD.
what do i think? i think this was just tactically brilliant play from magnus carlsen. i look forward to what he'll become in the chess world. thank you as always for posting, mato =]
Bravo, majstore.Mato kuje konja po mijesecu...Mato is my favourite chess analyst. His commentary is short but effective.Keep up the good work, buddy.U zdravlje Mato.
this is Anastacias mate, Its very pretty but also pretty well-known. It's more or less a simple motif. Magnus surely didn't have to think about it at all.
@ftworthxxx He might have another style then those players but i dont know how he can fail to impress someone. He is the world #1. I prefer Kasparovs style before Magnus but he wins, thats what it is about.
Mato, I thought Bobby Fischer was the best!? :) But maybe, like Bobby, Magnus can capture the public imagination in a way that Kasparov and Karpov never quite did. I don't think Magnus quite has Bobby's charisma, but he does seem to be pretty interesting guy, and has a similar enigmatic playing style.
Breathtaking finish here! He has a totally crushing position, for me sometimes the easiest in which to miss the elegant and unexpected mate of this type -- but not for Magnus!
@mycatrox Probably. You think Carlsen will ever have a long-term 100-point rating advantage over the field like Kasparov did? If he can be that dominant with players as strong as Kramnik, Anand and Aronian around, I think he becomes the new all time greatest.
Magnus have a lot of potential, but i think he have a long way to go....maybe in another 3 years or so...but as of now he's not prepare for it....keep in mind once you the champ, you must defend the title every world tournament....i think that's alot of pressure on him.
Is Magnus Carlsen Greatest Chess Player of all Times? What a nonsense question! He is a phantastic player - and may be become the best ever but now - did he make inventions like Bronstein? Was his ELO higher then Kasparovs? Was he ever world champion? Were his tournament successes up to now as breathtaking as Bobby Fischers? Was he unstoppable as Karpov around 1975 - by the way the most successful tournament player of all times!
@SuperShakespeare He became the youngest chess player in history to be ranked world number one. 2009 World blitz chess champion. ELO of 2826 (2nd world best). Come on, this guy's a star. Possibly the world's best player of all time in the near future.

Robert James FISCHER will always be the greatest chess player who has ever lived.
and the reasons are obvious.

@JadeTomZ what are they? Btw Garry Kasparov was the world champion 1985-2000 ( Highest rating 2851) .... Bobby Fischer 1972–75 (Highest rating 2785)
Any difference ? LoL

AlanWattParrot 5 days ago
@JadeTomZ first off, there is no real way to compare him to kasparov without having them play a bunch of games, and it probably won't happen.
second, kasparov's peak rating was better than fischer's.
third, while fischer might have retired early robbing him of a lot of championships, he was still only champion for 3 years to kasparov's 15.
fourth, suggesting that noone will EVER be better than him is plain silly
so what are these obvious reasons you mention?

For me the 2 best players of all times were Fischer and Tartakower ...
Fischer because of his incredible genius at playing ,
Tartakower for his books ,that gave me the passion for chess .
So telling "who's the best" is not a so simple question to answer ...

Magnus Carlsen is a product of the computer chess era. Professional chess has been killed off by computer training.
So to answer the question, the greatest ever of nothing IS nothing.
