  • I agree the movie is not for everyone, but I was alive for this movie and it was much more intense in full screen. However, I do agree, the movie is dead boring at times.

  • oh..btw.

i bet you hate "Melancholia" too..^^

  • Comment removed

  • Nope. This guy didn't get it. I respect your right to have a different opinion than mine, but your comments make me roll my eyes. Its very clear you did not get it, or tried to.

  • @evinado1 - 1) I'm not a "guy", I'm right here. No need to speak in the 3rd-person, it's very rude.

    2) No, I "got" it... it was just insufferably boring. This movie has SIX minutes of black, sans music. I'm sorry, but the absence of all sound/video is not something anyone needs to "get" for art's sake - it is just pretentious, and selfish.

  • 2001 rarely had a moment that could give it a 'dated' look. Considering all the films before it, it broke ground... Kubrick pulled off things that the only living person could do is either Coppola or Fellini. Hitchhikers missed the mark for me, Rockwell & Mos Def carried the movie, Bill Nigh came in a tie with Milakovitch; their character really needed more liberation than the original story would permit. Sci-fi suffers from too much production concerns and not enough character exposition.

  • Grrr "our job" not "out"

  • So I watched 2001when I was 7yrs old and didn't get the ending. At 7, I said okay, I'm a kid my brain hasn't matured enough perhaps as a adult i'll get it. Once an adult I still didn't get the ending. Stanley Kubrick said in an interview a few years before he passed, that if you understand the ending then "we didn't do out job". Hahah art as it's finest. Art is challenges you to think!

  • i hate seeing people dismiss 2001 as something they don't "get." it's not like all you have to do is flip switch in your brain and suddenly you love the movie. liking 2001 requires building up an understanding and appreciation for art. you're like a five year old standing in front of the mona lisa. who's gonna love the painting more, the child or an art connoisseur? if a five year old saw 2001 he'd be bored out of his mind! what's the difference between the child and an adult philistine?

  • You need to cover the movie MOON!!!! :D

  • I love 2001.It is a great movie and everyone has their opinions.

  • After watching this, my first thought was "What did I just watch? Better check Wikipedia." I literally had no idea what just happened. As others said, the visuals and audio was quite nice however.

  • i respect that some people think that no dialogue is boring, to me its inspirational, because thats what space is really like, theres no sound. And the slow movie and confusing plot bit, if they made a movie of all four books, people would understand it more.

  • @MinersIIAnonymous - The lack of dialogue isn't what made it boring though.

  • always check these vids out before watching movies

  • watch confusedmatthews review on this.

  • That awkward moment at 1:15 when you realize Kubrick invented the iPad in 1968.

  • @KazinatorGX, yeah, i noticed that scene too. makes you wonder how far ahead Kubrick's imagination was.

  • Most of the time 2001 looked like one of those videos where they change the CC to negative and play a bunch of screeching sounds,But good

  • I'm impressed. You pretty much nailed those reviews. :)

  • @ditzwill - Very glad you enjoyed it. Hope you stick around and watch some more.

  • Thanks jon for movie night. I love watching these reviews. It helps me with the movies i chose to view on the weekends. Keep making them!

  • Gah! 2001 had such deep, intense metaphorical meaning, and it really is true, artful filmmaking. Easily one of the best films I've ever seen. If you let yourself fall into that state of diegesis, it's not boring, it's just intense.

  • Moneyball: Thrilling when it tried to be, emotional when it had to. With great writing and great acting this movie has awards season written all over it. 10/10

  • An impassioned performance by Costner, and a deep poetic display by Jones, streamline the theme of baseball's golden age in an amazing display of sport and cinema. (10/10).

  • It's definately a movie you have to commit yourself to if you want to watch it

  • Moneyball: Moneyball used MLB Productions' video combined with live shots beautifully and it made it so real on many levels. The ending really made me want to root on the Athletics and the daughters song tells the story. 10/10

  • Field of Dreams: Great sports-fantasy crossover. Brilliant Performances by Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster. This movie breaks the mold of traditional sports films. 10/10

  • Been watching you forever, and I just thought of something. I feel like this could be the kind of thing that plays before a theatre movie. It would give a lot of people some good information.

  • I realize you probably have all of these videos pre-recorded, but a movie night I would love to see would be requiem for a dream. Truely one of the best films ever produced if not a bit overboard PSA. amazing movie if you've never seen it jon, It'll leave permanent scars.

  • @itwasme356 - Prerecorded? How? Most of the movies I review aren't released until the video the episode airs...

  • @JPizzle1122 didnt think that far ahead lol, also when i posted that i had been awake for 38 hrs. just thinking back to some of the WATJ vids maybe,

anyways, requiem for a dream, do eeettt

  • Field of Dreams: Classic, must see for any baseball fan. Kevin Kostners best movie. Can never watch it just once. "If you build it, they will come" 9/10

  • Moneyball: great story, characters, and acting but it lacks the extra touch. 9/10

  • @TotalGameMaster That's what I typed. 42.

  • Moneyball: Outstanding film, great acting, story, and dialogue. The complete package. 10/10.

  • I think 2001 a space odyssey was incredible and i give it a full 10 it is one of my all time favourites but i love that you are not "afraid" of giving it a 5 if you didn't like it, that means you don't care about other people's opinion and what we are getting is your own and very personal review, and that is more than i can say of most of the reviewers out there.

Sorry if my english is not too good.

  • @NikaziO14 - Very glad you're able to see it that why - I appreciate your respecting my opinion, thank you.

  • @JPizzle1122 Because it's funny for the rest of us.

  • You should watch the tree of life... now THERE'S a fucking ridiculously slow ass movie

  • captivating title...

  • ITS HIS OPINION PEOPLE. DONT HATE ON HIM.

  • @SnoppDolme idiot

  • I loved the new "Hitchhikers" but the TV series was my faverite adaptation of that story. :)

  • Tried to watch it once. At the 6 minute mark when I was still watching monkeys on a rock I turned it off.

  • 2001 is a good movie, but keep your thumb on near the fast forward button and you can just skip through the more avant-garde parts of the movie.

  • Wow jon, its called symbolism, yes its wasted time if you don't understand what he was trying to achieve, an awakening of the mind, a subconsis stimuli if you would. Just the idea of computer AI was imspiring, but what does it truely mean? I believe the last bit was to make you thing, relize that "Intelligence" as we know it can be applied to anything, and when done so can turn on us, for any reason "it" so chooses.

  • @ladyfrigiana - No. I got at all that. I didn't understand why I had to watch green oceans and purple mountains for the last 20 minutes of the film followed by four minutes of black.

  • @JPizzle1122 Imho, I feel as if the Director was despirate to change the viewers mindset, to make them think in a different mode, not to go all hippy, but like to awake the "soul" And if you don't like that answer, drop some acid and try watching it again,(jk lol drugs are bad mkay)

  • Have to say I agree with you Jon. The movie had great cinematography..but not the best delivery. Well done on this episode. And you must be a bit of a mind reader. I got on tonight with the intent of suggesting reviews for a few of the major baseball films like "The Natural" and, personal favorite, "Field of Dreams." I see you've already started tackling this list and I'll be sure to leave a review for FoD (possibly Moneyball too). Keep up the good work sir!

  • couldn't finish 2001, it was just too boring, might have been cutting egde at the time but so where a lot of crap movies, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy on the other hand, one of my fave movies, I never saw the original so I had nothing to compare it to, but i'd give it a solid 9 easy

  • 2001 was my favorite movie for a long time. Admittedly, it goes slowly at times, but where there is action it is often suspenseful and when there isn't the movie is still intriguing. This is especially true when the apes discover the monolith and during the ending sequence of the film.

  • 6 time 9 equals 42.

  • When you said something show it for real cock sucker

  • i watched 2001: a space odyssey for the 1st and last time on a laser disc lol...... does anyone even know what those things are anymore?

  • 2001 raped my mind.

  • Do you own more than one tie?

  • @cisforcat Yes

  • 2001 isn't for everyone, but I personally love it. To some its slow and boring, but to others there's a lot of meaning beyond it. It's worth watching just for the score, visuals, and it's impact on the pop culture and the world of cinema. I can't tell if you'll like or not, but as with all films you just have to watch to decide for yourself. 10/10

  • @lightingcobra Oh I haven't Hitchhiker's yet, but I've been wanting to for a while

  • 2001 was interesting, but as you say, drawn out. I really liked the sequel 2010 movie better.

  • Jon hit the nail on the head about 2001. I actually like the sequel 2010 much better, even though it has a cliche cold-war sub-plot.

  • Moneyball: In my mind one of the best movies of 2011. Not only was the story inspiring, but the movie had an Oscar worthy script and superb performances. The movie could really go from funny to inspiring in a perfect way. The movie is also at a perfect pace. Everyone can like this movie weather you they like baseball or not, 9/10.

  • 2001 is one of the best films ever made. It says waaay to much with just a few words and a lot of imagery and simbolism. You do not just watch 2001, you think about it and notice the hugh amount of philosophy behind it. I agree that some parts are unnecesarilly long, but this masterpiece deserves at least a 9/10

  • I'm trying not to sound arrogant here, but I loved 2001. I found it to be the most beautiful, unique, trippy, and wonderful film I've seen. It's IMO Kubrick's best, Clockwork Orange preceding. I understand your point of it being slow, but it's supposed to be that way to capture the utter feelings, beauty, and aloneness space has to offer. You just need patience and an eye for beauty put together brilliantly. I'm not dissing your opinion, I'm just giving my review.

  • Did I ever call it "symbolism"? lol. And what am I accepting? That there's black at the end of a movie? Okay... black seems to be at the end of every movie, so that was easy.

  • @dmatzen6 I've seen over 2,000 films... thisis the only one with four minutes of black at the end. More to my point -- the movie is drawn out, and boring.

  • Regarding 2001: I agree with you completely, Jon.

  • I'm fine with people defending this movie, but quite honestly just because something is obscure doesn't mean that its "Genius" I Like 2001 for its themes and the incredible atmosphere made when HAL is around. Not because its different. People who say something is better because its different is either a dumbass hipster or just a dumbass.

  • Field of Dreams-While certainly not the best baseball film I've seen, it's a very good film with some decent acting, a great premise, and some very heartwarming moments. It can be cheesy at times, but I like it. 8/10.

  • I totally get your review of 2001, but I disagree, mostly. The first time I watched It, I was completely bored and wondering when it would end, but subsequent viewing have warmed me up to it. I find it now to be perfectly mesmerizing and dreamlike, and although there are a few things I still find boring, all the "bloated and purposeless" scenes, like the monkeys and the Stargate sequence, I love.

  • @wartadoo (cont.) And a note on the black screens. They are meant to be overture, intermission, and exit music, so that the film is like a visual orchestral piece. Could be seen as pretentious, but they're meant to set the mood, ease you in, and let you loose slowly (or tediously).

  • Any pre-lucas space movie is slow. Moreover, just look at the atsronauts/cosmonauts. They ARE very slow especially in open space.

  • I loved playing the Hitchhiker's Guide text game on my Apple IIGS. It was on a giant floppy disc. No pictures, but it was the most engaging video game I have ever played to this day. I always imagined the world of Hitchhiker's Guide to be darker than it was in the film, how small and seemingly meaningless we all are. I enjoyed the film, but found it a bit too "campy".

  • I have read the books to Hitchhickers and I didn't like the movie that much, I mean its funny but they tried to cram elements from all the books into one movie. Which didn't seem right at some points.

  • I personally think that 2001 is a masterpiece, but I respect your opinion at least you praised the amazing camera work and special effects, but Kubrick really doesn't create "lethargic cinema". The only three films that come to my mind as "lethargic" are 2001, Barry Lyndon and parts of The Shining. While his other films A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, The Killing, Paths of Glory, etc, are rather fast paced. If 2001 is your introduction to Kubrick, check out A Clockwork Orange or FMJ.

  • I think 2001 is an epic movie! It is number 1 in my all time 5 favorite movies.

I have the soundtrack used in the movie, and the soundtrack *not* used in the movie.

Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy is a funny movie, and is very enjoyable, but not one of my all time favorites.

    42.

  • why the dislikes ?

  • *facepalm*

  • sherlock holmes brilliant

  • Hey Jon, i thought you were a grammar Nazi! Have a look at 6:19 !

  • Wow, It's like most disliked Movie Night video ever...

  • I think that Kubrick's goal was to give the viewer the trueness of space. It's not all zero-g and phasers. It's probably boring a lot of the time. Just sitting, waiting.

  • Jon I completly disagree with your opinion as you could of told as my comment was featured in your video (thanks for that) But I am fine with it as its YOUR opinion not our one it is yours. I am just wondering how many people will say "your an idiot" or "You dont get it".

  • @vicarcharlie - Around 145 right now.

  • @JPizzle1122 could you review The Darkest Hour?

  • I remember seeing 2001 when I was younger and thought it was kinda boring. But that was years ago. Maybe if I watch it again I might have a different opinion on it.

  • @lobstershop - "in subscribe" all you want... you're a fucking asshole.

  • you're looking at it the wrong way if you're looking at the story of the film. The film definitely isn't for everyone, especially those who grow on "transformers" type of "sci-fi". The film is more of an experience than a story, and a spiritual one at that. And the ambiguity of the end shaped the thought provoking, hard sci-fi movie genre

  • @TheHoleBag - Yes. I got that. I'm saying it could have done so without the four minutes of black at the end. Or the 20 minutes of green and purple mountains.

  • Honestly, there are two kind of "boring" films; good ones, and bad ones. Movies like 2001 or Star Trek TMP are good "boring" films, for example. It just seems like you're numbering movies (which, in my opinion, is a little silly itself) based on their pacing, whether or not if it keeps up the mood consistently.

I do think the movie is vastly overrated, and the people screaming "BUT ITS ABOUT THE SYMBOLISM" is obnoxious, but I do think it's a great movie, and if I were in 1968 it'd be better.

  • To say that 2001 is almost unwatchable makes me question your whole view on movies. Kubrick is a cinematic genius and he is one of the few famous directors I feel confident saying that about. 2001 is the type movie that shows that the director is serious and respects his audience. I agree that today most movie goers are buying a ticket for the edge of their seat but it makes no excuse for you to not be able to appreciate a slow movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey...

  • @LuneyTune72 - Did I say Kubrick *wasn't* a genius, or that I *didn't* appreciate it?

    Please pay attention.

  • Jon, your whole point about things being drawn out too long in Kubrick's films is a good example that the average attention span doesn't last more than minute. Seriously, the purpose of drawn out shots in this movie is not "avant garde"...it's not just art. The difference between a Kubrick film and a modern film is that Kubrick respects the audience and doesn't exploit them to extreme amounts of action and shot jumps. His films are far more believable than any other film that I have ever seen.

  • @LuneyTune72 Respects his audience? The movie contains SIX minutes of black. Explain how that is "respecting" an audience... by just wasting their time.

  • @JPizzle1122 That six minutes of black you keep complaining about is just Kubrick's way of giving you some time to prepare your eyes, ears, and mind for the amazing experience they're all about to have!

  • @dmatzen6 - At the *end* of the movie? Really?

  • @JPizzle1122 wait, you're complaining about 6 minutes of black at the END of the movie? I thought you were talking about any black parts that were in the slow beginning. Wow, there's black at the end of the movie.... what do you expect there to be?! It's the END. Maybe it was just your copy of the movie you watched that had that, because by searching on Google: "6 minutes of black 2001 space odyssey" I see no one else making such a fuss about there being 6 minutes of black...

  • @dmatzen6 it exists... it's pointless, and *not* symbolism. Just accept it.

  • The restaurant at the end of the universe would do such a more interesting movie.. I didn't like the movie, it lacked the jokes the book had. Stephen Fry is the only right thing I can see in the movie. I actually liked Space Odyssey, it had a sort of Koyaanisqatsi feeling into it, movie that I also love. However, Dr. Strangelove is my personal Kubrick all time favorite.

  • hmm..thats interesting i remember watching hitchikers gude to the galaxy when it first came out and i absolutly hated it. given im 16 now so u can figure out how old i was when i watched it. but yea based on what i remember i would give it 4.5/10 at best

  • 42...

  • Comment removed

  • Kubrick is a legend... from A Clockwork Orange to The Shining to Full Metal Jacket, didn't like 2001: A Space Odyssey, not into si-fi much...

  • Personally I don't see how A Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy could POSSIBLY be rated higher than 2001: A Space Odyssey

  • @FraggerRem Sophisticated metaphor vs. lighthearted humor. It's almost apples to oranges, they have different goals for what they are trying to accomplish by making the movie.

  • i hated guide to galaxy. too frigging cute for my tastes. Too much talking goofing around. Good characters but bad bad realism. 2001 captured what space 'feels' like with out giving away the ending.

  • I've never actually seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, so I don't have much of an opinion on it, or at least an educated one, but Hitchhikers I have seen and thought that it was really quite funny, and now rarely forget my towel, haha. Now I'm curious about the radio show...

  • The guide is worth watching just for Stephen Fry quirky narration everything else is just gravy.

  • @TheRanblingjohnny - Very true.

  • @josecarlosamador - Yeah, except the difference between 2001 and Avatar is that James Cameron didn't pad his effects-based story with an hour of drawn-out nonsense. The monkey-scenes at the beginning? Could have done that with a single, 60-second shot, and moved onto the story. My issue wasn't with pacing, it was about purpose, and length.

  • @JPizzle1122 Like I said, great thing in this movie is not the plot or purpose at all. 2001 is half century younger than Avatar. It's hard to imagine the same visual impact of 2001 in the current days. Considering the time the film was made, the visual details are what makes this movie good. The second challenge is diving into Kubric's mind to find out what this movie is all about... human evolution/human death/human purpose...? Or possibly nothing at all? (continues)

  • @JPizzle1122 The monkey scene... it's easier to make a monkey make-up like that nowadays than in 68. Like I said... such thing should not impress us at all now, but they did it at the time. Do you remember Tarantino's Basterds movie? Right in the beggining when Col. Landa talks to that french farmer... that scene could be shorten to 60-sec shot too... but they added extended dialogs for you to know the character better... in 2001, there purpose was to admire the visuals instead.

  • @josecarlosamador admire the visuals of men in apes suits? Seriously?

  • @JPizzle1122 Admire the production? Yes, seriously.

  • This movie is amazing when you are high.

  • 2001 is one of my favorite films. While I agree that the movie being drawn out may not appeal to some audiences, I do not see it as a negative. As you said, the movie is art, and I don't see any paintings rushing by at 100 mph, know what I mean? Also, by slowing the movie down this much, it becomes obvious that Kubrick wasn't playing to the audience, which I think is not only appropriate, but essential.

  • Can you sometime review Apollo 18

  • @horse10518 I have.

  • @buster9877 that wasn't it at all, actually... thanks for not listening to my review.

  • @JPizzle1122 Never said anything to you.

  • @JPizzle1122 Because he's not at all allowed to share his own opinion. What is this freedom of speech?

  • @johnmighty5 - fun fact: freedom of speech doesn't apply to my YouTube channel.

  • Brilliant book and movie.

  • I have also read/seen The Hitchhikers Guide. I love the movie just as much as the book. In terms of Scify, its silly, but its great. Grouping these two movies together is sort of weird, they are two different types of scify (one that you obviously enjoyed more than the other). I think both do deserve 8's, but for very different reasons.

  • I've recently read The Sentinel by Arthur C Clarke and watched 2001. I think both are fantastic examples of science fiction done right. I think Kubrick did a really impressive job with this film. It may have been drawn out at points, but I think speeding things up would have taken away from its grandeur, it was a spectacle, and a wonderful piece of cinema. We are removed from the era it came out in, and I think that makes us appreciate it less.Rating this film any lower than an 8 would be a shame

  • Do you need eyedrops? you blink like 2 times a second.

  • 2001 set the bar for filmmaking in not only sci-fi by cinema itself. A huge mass of directors (Spielberg, Fincher, Nolan, Malick, Aronofsky etc) have pinned Kubrick as their key influences. With some respect the film is pretentious but not if you understand what to look for, with repeat viewings you will discover more and more subtle notes. And most of the symbolism and true plot and story is yet to be realized by fans. And it still stands strong, nearly 50 years later. It deserves a 7 at least.

  • i just watched the hitch hikers guide for the 50th time this ...... well cant really call it 2011 anymore. so 1st time in 2012

  • @mattghiringhellihere Nobody watches the same movie every week... that's just weird.

  • @JPizzle1122 nononono it just the times i watch it collects it around the year but ........ yea im a bit weird

  • apsoloutly terible movie

  • Was there any symbolism in 2001? I couldn't tell from the comments so far. :/

  • brilliant on mushrooms

  • Loving movie night so far - England UK

  • @mattydude2011 -- Thanks for watching :)

  • @ I agree many films are art and should be viewed as such, not all of them are. There are two ways to view a film; anylyse the art and meaning ect. Or watch for sheer entertainment value. And when it comes down to it films are essentially for entertainment. Not everybody has to look for a deeper meaning when it comes to movies. You said it yourself "I guess film art isn't your fancy." So why do you expect all film critics to think like you? Entainment? No! Lets just anylyse every fucking scene.

  • @EastmanFilm, I completely agree. 2001 was meant to ask questions and spark thinking. Kubrick was obviously a fan of classical music which does the same thing.

  • @GuitarHeroPhenomSux Exactly. The classical segments add even more to the film being an experience. It is something to think about and be interested by.

  • Hey Jon does your wife share your love of movies or does she tolerate it? My family doesn't really care for them so when I go to the theater alone it makes me feel lonely.

  • @2109917162 - She usually watches most of them with me.

  • 2001 - just a great movie, watch a true master at work.

THGTTG? Terribly horrible or horribly terrible. Still can't make up my mind, but in my honest opinion, that movie sucked big time!

  • Wow Jon you are getting a lot of heat for this video even though it was just your opinion. Did you get this much heat when you reviewed Apocalypse now?

  • @2109917162 - I got a fair amount, yes -- but truthfully, I mistakenly watched the extended Redux version of Apocalypse Now, which most agree *is* bloated and pointless. Whereas 2001 is a filmed I ACTUALLY LIKED... it was just marred by it's own faults.

  • Very good jon, love ur show, from England aha :D

  • @Framo51 - Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching.

  • Jon: I have to say I completely agree with you on both of these films! I can appreciate '2001: A Space Odyssey' for the fact it is a sci-fi "classic" but I just couldn't believe how pointless half of the film was! As a MASSIVE Hitchhiker's fan I would agree with you about this film. I adore the radio series and unfortunately, as I am only 17, few of my peers have ever heard this masterpiece. Thank you Jon for telling other viewers who may never have heard the radio series or read the book(s)!

  • @lilly94white - You're very welcome :)

  • Field of dreams: The essential baseball classic. Great cinema, a loving story and the happiest ending of all time. Memorable lines and moments , one of my all time favorite films. 10/10

  • @metsrule2000 - Good review!

  • Why do people complain about 2001 being long? Every scene has something to look at and feels important. If you cut any of the film out you'd be missing the point.

  • @verystrangegeorge - Because you can have an important, slow-paced film without a bloated runtime.

  • @JPizzle1122 Bloated? I loved every minute of the film. There isn't a single scene that could be removed without ruining it.

  • @verystrangegeorge - And I would argue that the SIX MINUTES OF BLACK that pad the film could be removed just fine.

    Seriously.

  • We watched this movie in Physics, it was actually pretty good, if you played it 4x faster.

  • Agree completely about 2001:ASO. I'm sure the beginning and ending mean something and have a deep moral, and I'm usually all for that, but this film gets excruciating. In 1968, I'm sure the 'Star Gate' bit at the end would have been spectacular and wowed audiences, but as special effects are everywhere now, that sequence's only purpose now would be to bore, or deliberately induce seizures.
