  • Interestingly the English don't chose to translate the song when teaching it to their children, whereas other cultures do. Is that what I can surmise from the below posts? The English court probably spoke French at the time this was introduced in England...

  • Interesting, and maybe a fair guess. It is certainly the only lullaby (if not the only thing longer than a word!) known to young british kids in another language. I certainly sang it for years when little without having a clue what it meant.

  • the arabic version is : Khouya Hassan, khouya Hassan, nod naasou.... still original one (french) remains the best

  • brother jacob doesn't seem right to me

  • some people also say "brother jack" or "brother john" for the english version too

  • If I remember right, which I could be soo wrong. But Frere Jacques I think translates into Friar Jack, or John, or something. I learned this when I was around 6 years old, and that's been a hell of a long time...seeing that I'm now 24..lol

  • the english is acutualy,"are you sleeping? are you sleeping?brother john, brother john? morning bells are ringing ,morning bells ar ringing ding ding dong, ding ding dong."

  • Frere is the french word for brother

  • I thought it referred to friar specifically, but brother (a synonym) fit better in the translation?

  • the actual translation for frere is brother, i took a french class last year, i'm guessing the song is biblical in nature, brother jack being a priest and the 'morning bells' being church bells, however the meaning i provide is as i stated merely a guess.
