Hahahah je ne savais pas ce que je chantais!! je l'ai appris comme un folle! :D
C'est comme mes petits neveux (ils sont jumeaux) ... quand ils chantent "beat it" par Michael Jackson ... au lieu de dire " just beat it, beat it" ils disent: pileeeeeeeeet pileeeeet" ... et ce comme ça que je chantais ce chanson aussi muahahah
This is probably the worst version I've ever heard, it really pretty bad. The words gnashing from one stanza to the next, the arrangement is... well the whole lot is a musical abortion and horribly soccer mommish.
LoL. My French teacher played this video in class last Friday xD I used to sing this when I was younger (I totally butchured it then though xD) I didn't even know it was French till this year! xD

@bbtterfly I was taught both versions growing up, so the translational differences between the both of them used to confuse me so much. Especially since, at the time, I didn't know how French verbs worked. XD
I am 60 now and learnt in India when I was 5 years old in St Joseph's Convent, Patna. Lovely song and tune My Grandchildren 10 and 11 years old are learnign to play it on the Piano in the US and UK !!
LoL I can play this song on my cellphone's dial pad. It's really easy. 1231 1231 345 345 565431 565431 221 221. Really fun when your bored. =D
Francais: Je peux joue cette chanson sur mon téléphone cellulaire. Il est très facile. 1231 1231 345 345 565431 565431 221 221. Il est très amusant à jouer lors de s'ennuyer. =D (J'espère que mon français n'est legiable. J'ai eu l'aide d'un traducteur.)
Interestingly the English don't chose to translate the song when teaching it to their children, whereas other cultures do. Is that what I can surmise from the below posts? The English court probably spoke French at the time this was introduced in England...
Interesting, and maybe a fair guess. It is certainly the only lullaby (if not the only thing longer than a word!) known to young british kids in another language. I certainly sang it for years when little without having a clue what it meant.
i knew the italian version but it just come into my mind.. was something like: don martino, campanaro. dormi tu? dormi tu? sona la campana, sona la campana: din dan don, din dan don.
If I remember right, which I could be soo wrong. But Frere Jacques I think translates into Friar Jack, or John, or something. I learned this when I was around 6 years old, and that's been a hell of a long time...seeing that I'm now 24..lol
the english is acutualy,"are you sleeping? are you sleeping?brother john, brother john? morning bells are ringing ,morning bells ar ringing ding ding dong, ding ding dong."
the actual translation for frere is brother, i took a french class last year, i'm guessing the song is biblical in nature, brother jack being a priest and the 'morning bells' being church bells, however the meaning i provide is as i stated merely a guess.
moi qui pensait que c'était juste les français qui connaissait cet chanson débile! xD

Frere is the french word for brother

I thought it referred to friar specifically, but brother (a synonym) fit better in the translation?
MassiveLemon 2 years ago
the actual translation for frere is brother, i took a french class last year, i'm guessing the song is biblical in nature, brother jack being a priest and the 'morning bells' being church bells, however the meaning i provide is as i stated merely a guess.
