uutah used to come to mariposa and play the feingold trust concerts put on by bob and doie de witt. we had the honor of opening for him a couple times. truly an original in the folk tradition. a unique individual. reminds me a little of ed abbey. always drew a healthy crowd of happy heppies
i enjoyed this in so many ways...so thanks to richard for the share, i did not know that utah also had such a wonderful personality as well as his already known talent! very entertaining!
Thanks, Venice Artists, for letting me share this concert. One of his best stories was about how, when traveling, he knew the FBI was keeping taps on his phone, so he called his wife and told her, "Whatever you do, don't dig up the back yard. That's where the guns are buried!" He got his garden tilled courtesy of Uncle Sam! As a fellow vet, I can truly appreciate the wit. The Creator got another good man. RIP.
Met Bruce Phillips back in the middle 60s when I belonged to the Intermountain Folk Music Council (Rosalie Sorrels was also at our meetings). "Utah" told of his army experiences in Korea. This was before my Vietnam experience of 1968. My brother Joel, still a resident of SLC, kept me up with Bruce's contributions to the public forum (usually from Nevada) until his death. A wonderful American.
I have always Loved his truth in comments and was happy to see him live at least once before he died. However I am also a Lenard Cohen fan, although I saw the humor in his jab.
Heard him on the Democracy Now labor day 2009 broadcast. The whole hour was just him and Amy Goodman, with performance clips. I think it had some of this.
This guy is the epitome of an anarchist to me. It's not about fashion or being extreme. He's just a true American with true American values. Not greed, and hate, and pretense. Just a love of art and culture and freedom. We need more folks like him.
...and for anyone who hasn't heard it, check out "the past didn't go anywhere" by ani defranco and utah phillips. it's one of the best albums out there today.
I know... I knew about Ani Difranco (personally I might add) but didn't start getting to know his songs etc. Till now. oh well... Long story short, I know what ya mean
Utah actually didn't say that, but it doesn't really matter does it? as long as we collect those stones in the river of time... The past didn't go anywhere, and we're all still in it; even after you're dead, you're still in it. We are everybody's stones.
I remembered the dude's name that said that (if it really makes a difference) above statement. Ammond Hennesy! Though knowing who said that really doesn't make the truth of that statement any more or less valid. It is a stone that we may all take :)
The Strawberry Music Festival takes place in Spring and Fall at Camp Mather, near the north entrance to Yosemite Park. More info at: 3dubu strawberrymusic dot com
Glad to have stumbled onto this series of U.Utah's singing! Thanks! I've seen him a couple of times over the years and would love to see him again! Where was this Strawberry festival?
The funniest performer we've seen at Strawberry. Loved the jokes about drunk snakes and white supremacy. (sorry I walked through your shot, glad we got great seats)Post more!

utah said "an anarchist is anyone who doesn't need a cop to tell them what to do". Brilliant man, sorely lost, R.I.P.
