Saw an interview with George Martin where he mentioned trying to convince Paul McCartney to trim the length of "Hey Jude" down. George told Paul, "Number 1 songs aren't seven minutes long". Paul said, "This one is" Nuff said
If you notice Paul throws his voice around alot in the background. Why is this you may ask? After they quit touring, the Beatles never played on TV without a guide track of themselves. They're playing to a previously recorded "live take" track of Hey Jude and singing and playing over it, this was done to avoid disaster as the rust was starting to settle. All You Need Is Love was also performed on that global telecast this way.
@theroopsmith They actually did it this way since there was a BBC union miming ban in effect and they thought they could bypass this ban by singing live but playing to their recorded instrumental track. They figured the union wouldn't notice that they weren't really playing the instruments.
@cornball918 yes. They hadn't toured since mid-66, they basically became a studio band and by doing so, they were aware that anything they were producing in a studio couldn't possibly be pulled off by just the 4 of them on a live stage at least by their ability (it would have been great to see them at least attempt it!). I read about this in Abbey Road Sessions book, after '66, they were frightened of sounding bad in a Worldwide TV spot so they used a rhythm track for their own security.
wait wait, I thought there were only 2 performances and ive watched them a million times but this is like a 3rd version ive never seen, the camera is showing people i hadnt seen and McCartney is singing different! Im confused I thought there were only 2 takes of this, not 3!!!

The audience was hand-picked beforehand, so it's not as if the boys in the band felt threatened by anyone. Still, it all looks very spontaneous.
